Italian Official: ‘A Country Which Does Not Create Children Is Destined to Die’

Jack Montgomery reports at Breitbart:

Italy’s new Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Matteo Salvini is following Hungary’s Viktor Orbán in putting demographics at the heart of his programme, warning that a country which imports migrants instead of supporting families is “destined to die”.
The League (Lega) leader, who heads one half of Italy’s new populist coalition government, set out his priorities in an interview with The Sunday Times at the historic Palazzo del Viminale in Rome.
“A country which does not create children is destined to die,” Salvini stated bluntly.
“We have created a ministry of the family to work on fertility, nurseries, on a fiscal system which takes large families into account. At the end of this mandate, the government will be measured on the number of newborns more than on its public debt,” he declared.
The 45-year-old warned that nothing less than Italy’s “tradition, our story, our identity” was at stake — particularly as the political left was using declining birthrates and the supposed threat of an ageing population an “excuse” to “import immigrants”.
The Italian leader appears to be following in the footsteps of conservatives in Central Europe, particularly Poland and Hungary, who have made a conscious decision to pursue pro-family policies and reject mass migration, even if it means slower short-term gains to GDP and provoking the globalist establishment in the European Union.
After winning a third term with a parliamentary super-majority earlier this year, Hungary’s Viktor Orbán made it abundantly clear that his government would concern itself primarily with “how many children are born to Hungarian women; how many children we raise together; whether there will be a Hungarian future; whether the Hungarian nation will survive biologically and numerically; what we must do to stop the decline we clearly see in this area; and what we must do to change the fact that we have more funerals than christenings.”
New policies intended to help responsible married couples into homeownership, support childrearing, and raise incomes may already be bearing fruit, with the U.S.-based Institute for Family Studies suggesting the country is successfully “winding back the clock on much of the fertility and family-structure transition that demographers have long considered inevitable”.

There is no such thing as an “inevitable” trend. People make historical trends, and not the other way around. Ronald Reagan famously said: “We are not, as some would have us believe, doomed to an inevitable decline. I do not believe in a fate that will all on us no matter what we do. I do believe in a fate that will fall on us if we do nothing.”

The media routinely describe Matteo Salvini as “far right,” just as they’ve branded Donald Trump “far right,” like Reagan before him. Whenever people reject the advice of doomsayers who tell us we must accept our “inevitable” decline, liberals call them “far right.”

Actress Flees Italy as ‘Sophisticated’ Europeans Side With Harvey Weinstein

Our “allies” are so thoughtful and enlightened:

Italian movie actress and director Asia Argento is facing pushback in her home country after speaking out about an alleged rape at the hands of disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein. While Argento’s courage in speaking about what happened to her was praised in Hollywood, and helped encourage at least 40 women to speak out about their own experiences of assault at the hands of Weinstein, public opinion in Italy has sided more with Weinstein than with Argento, according to Quartz’s Annalisa Merelli.
Merelli points out that the opinion writers have been remarkably bold in their condemnation of Argento and other actresses speaking out against sexual assault — former journalist and MP Renato Farina, for instance, has suggested that the assaults described by actresses are “prostitution, not rape.” Vittorio Feltri, editor in chief of Libero, a right wing populist newspaper, said that since Weinstein didn’t physically harm Argento that the sex must have been consensual — and that, if anything, Argento should be thankful to Weinstein for forcibly performing oral sex on her. Politician Vittorio Sgarbi went still further, arguing that Weinstein “was actually assaulted by her.”
Prominent Italian women have targeted Argento as well, questioning why she didn’t speak out earlier about the rape or claiming that she deserved what happened to her since she willingly visited Weinstein in his hotel room.
In wake of the public outcry against her, Argento has said that she is leaving Italy for Germany to escape the “climate of tension” and “victim blaming.”
“Italy,” Argento said, “is far behind the rest of the world in its view of women.”

(Hat-tip: Instapundit.) Every American woman I’ve known who has traveled in Europe has talked about how different attitudes are there. Especially in France and Italy, women report that the cat-calling is horrific. In fact, if you pay attention to complaints about cat-calling in America, you’ll notice that the problem has an ethnic aspect. When a video of a woman being harassed on the streets of New York went viral in 2014, nearly all the harassers were black or Latino. This resulted in a discussion among feminists of whether complaining about cat-calling is racist. This is how “intersectionality” works: Only white men are to blame for sexism — and only American white men, because every American liberal believes Europe is better than America.

Muslim Who Killed 12 in Berlin Terrorist Attack Is Caught, Shot Dead in Italy

German officials issued a bulletin seeking Berlin terror suspect Anis Amri.

Immediately after Monday’s deadly truck rampage in Berlin, it was reported that police had apprehended a Pakistani suspect in the Islamic terrorist attack. However, evidence showed that a Tunisian immigrant — a man well-known to European anti-terrorism authorities — was the actual perpetrator. He managed to elude capture for three days:

Video has emerged of the Berlin Christmas market attack suspect Anis Amri pledging allegiance to ISIS. The footage emerged hours after he was killed in an early-morning shootout in Milan on Friday morning.
The Tunisian man, who has been the subject of a Europe-wide manhunt since Monday’s market attack in which 12 people were killed, was stopped in Sesto San Giovanni — a district in the northeastern part of Milan — just after 3am local time, Italian police said on Twitter. . . .
When the man was asked for his papers by Italian police, he pulled a .22 calibre gun out of his backpack and fired at them. . . .
The driver of the police car returned fire, killing the 24-year-old suspect. . . .
Italian Interior Minister Marco Minniti said the man shot was Amri “without any doubt.” The Tunisian had previously lived in Italy. . . .
Italian news agency ANSA said Amri arrived in Milan by train from the French region of Savoy. . . .
It suggests that Amri passed through at least two European borders after fleeing Berlin. . . .
German officials are now working to determine whether Amri had a network of people helping him flee from Germany to Italy, German federal prosecutor Peter Frank said.
Amri was considered to be one of the most dangerous Islamists in the country months before Monday’s attack, according to German intelligence officials.
He was put on a German security services list of dangerous people in March, which currently includes 549 individuals. . . .

(Via Memeorandum.) So, a Tunisian who was on a German security watch list nevertheless managed to pull off a major terrorist attack in Berlin, eluding authorities in Germany, crossing the French and Italian borders without anyone noticing and, if he had not randomly encountered a police patrol in Milan, Anis Amri might have escaped altogether.

Is anyone surprised by this? Europe’s political elites have effectively surrendered their countries to Muslim invaders. The elite have celebrated this invasion — #RefugeesWelcome, as Emma Watson says — while claiming that the real danger is “Islamophobia” and the “far right.” Even when police are successful in identifying dangerous Muslim extremists, government policies prevent them from taking measures to prevent terrorist attacks, because political leaders are under constant pressure from left-wing activists in the media to protect the so-called “refugees.”

People in Europe are being slaughtered by Muslims because European governments have effectively abolished their own borders, and anyone who complains about this insanity is denounced as a far-right “racist.”

Why Do You Hate Italians?

She’s an Italian actress named Alessandra Mastronardi, and if you needed a reminder to read Bob Belvedere’s Camp of the Saints . . .

Well, certainly she did the trick, eh? And speaking of Italians . . .

Mr. Santorum issued a statement that said, in part, “As the son of an Italian immigrant myself, I continue to believe that English is the language of opportunity in America under statehood or the current status.”
Mr. Neumann said that despite Mr. Romney’s having the backing of establishment Republicans in Puerto Rico, Mr. Santorum still had a good chance here “because of his connection with the religious sector of the community.” Mr. Santorum is Roman Catholic, as are an overwhelming majority of people in Puerto Rico.

Being in favor of English is not the same as being anti-Spanish. My daughter, who is fluent in Spanish — her husband is the son of Argentine immigrants, and she spent a year in a full-immersion Spanish language program in Argentina — teaches kindergarten in a school here in Maryland where about three-quarters of her students are the children of Hispanic immigrants who don’t speak English at home. You know what? Those kids’ parents are so happy that my daughter teaches those kids English. It is indeed “the language of opportunity,” and everybody knows it, and it shouldn’t be “controversial” for a politician to say so.

Good news for the English-speaking Italian-American in Missouri:

Thursday evening at the Chariton County caucus inside the Railyard Steakhouse . . . Republicans voted to send their full share of delegates to the district and state conventions in support of Rick Santorum.
For weeks, the Romney campaign has forcefully argued that Mr. Santorum’s victory in the Missouri primary last month was meaningless because no delegates were awarded. That assertion may turn out to be only partly true, which became clear for the first time here at the caucus meeting. . . .
An early glimpse into the caucuses unfolded here in Brunswick, a small town about two hours east of Kansas City, which decided to hold its meeting two days before the rest of the state.
The first question of the evening was whether to bind delegates to the results of the February primary. The measure passed by a wide margin and no discussion, which sent four delegates on behalf of Mr. Santorum and none for Mr. Romney or Representative Ron Paul of Texas.
“All of our county delegates will be bound to the popular vote for Chariton County,” said Andrea Rice, the county Republican chairwoman, who presided over the meeting and announced the results. “Four delegates will go for Rick Santorum.”

See what I’m talking about? Yes, officially, the Missouri primary was “non-binding,” but there was never any logic to the Romney spin. They wanted us to believe that Republicans attending a caucus in a county where Santorum previously got 60 or 70 percent of the primary vote would then turn around and award a majority of delegates to Romney. And considering that Santorum got 55% of the vote to 25% for Romney in the primary, this kind of caucus-flipping skullduggery would have to occur in county after county in order for Romney to swindle Santorum out of any significant number of delegates.

That’s just crazy talk, yet we heard that spin repeated endlessly on TV, and have seen it everywhere on the blogosphere. “Non-binding” became one of those things people said to show how sophisticated they were, as if anyone who counted Missouri a solid win for Santorum was a dimwit yokel, but Santorum won Missouri by THIRTY FREAKING POINTS!

“Non-binding,” my ass. Continue reading Why Do You Hate Italians? →

Part Of Recovering Western Civilization Is Just Saying “No” To Feminist Tripe

by Smitty

The Last Tradition links to Lowry in the NY Post contrasting the Titanic with Costa Concordia, but I think this analysis overplays the hand by a long shot:

I’m not trying to single out Italian men because the same crisis exists in the United States. We have almost two generation of males in this country that hasn’t be taught what a real man is or suppose to act like. Because of Feminist propaganda, traditional gender roles have been blurred to the point where it’s politically incorrect to acknowledge specific differences between men and woman. Put simply, manhood has to be taught to boys in order for them to become real men. And that’s not happening anymore.

I’m far more in agreement with Cassandra over at Villainous Company, emphasis original:

Wow. Just wow. Six dead and 29 missing in a tragic accident that (so far as I can see) is attributable to the cowardice, negligence, and poor example of the captain and crew – note carefully: to *some* men, not *all* men – and the reaction is, “Up yours, feminists/women – you got what you deserved”?
If a little boy is elbowed aside by an able bodied man and drowns as a result, has he “reaped what he sowed”? Alternate form of the implied argument is, “It’s not the man’s fault – those horrid feminists and their mind control rays made him do it!” Allow me to riff on the ubiquitous Heinlein quote:
Any society that allows morality to be defined down to the lowest common denominator will not long survive.

The morality of the crew members is between them and the Almighty. What is going to matter is that they have behaved unethically in abandoning their duties. The Admiralty Court, affectionately known as “the long green table” is one of the closer brushes you can have with the judgement seat of God while continuing to draw breath. They’ll build a timeline and rake those Italians over coals in slow motion, pointing out every single error of training, maintenance, and judgement. Or not; maybe the Italian court is as capsized as the Costa Concordia herself, but I doubt it. The amount of money involved in crewing, maintaining, and operating ships is such that they are Just. Not. Fannying. About.

In contrast to the radical feminists.

We enjoy tossing the entire Postmodern exercise in idiocy that is radical feminism under the bus around this blog, and then backing up over it several times, just to test the steering. Radical feminism is so risible that it really serves no use other than mockery. Trying to hang any sort of excuse on these bimbos is an act of auto-beclownment.

The traditional, mutually supportive roles of women and men are as simple as 2+2=4. Just because Andrea Dworkin and company came along and contended that arithmetic was an oppressive patriarchal regime, and that 2+2=5 is every bit as emotionally satisfying as the correct answer, does not an excuse make.

Man up: reject radical feminism, and every other attendant Postmodern falsehood, for such all have “Made in Hell” stamped on them. Aside: For an interesting character study on this topic, check out Lord Jim. I hated that the first time I read it, because I didn’t believe such a jackwagon could exist. Then I met one. A couple decades later, Barack Obama was elected.

MONDAY DOOM WATCH: Europe Circling the Economic Drain

Four headlines from Drudge:

Britain draws up emergency
plans for collapse of Euro …

IMF drafting $800 billion
bailout plan for Italy, Spain …

REPORT: FRANCE, GERMANY PREPARE
TO TAKE DRASTIC MEASURES …

NYT: Time runs short …

Remember, these are sophisticated Europeans. Liberals have always wanted America to be more like sophisticated Europe, where everybody has a mistress and six weeks of paid vacation.

Speaking of liberals, how does Paul Krugman explain the European economic crisis? Because I’m pretty sure Greece, Spain and Italy haven’t been governed by tax-cutting Republicans recently, and yet Krugman insists that all economic woe is caused by tax-cutting Republicans.

For example, when a city like Pontiac, Michigan, goes bankrupt:

The unemployment rate in Pontiac is pegged at 25 percent. In 2009, as GM restructured under a government bailout, it shuttered its plant in Pontiac and ceased production on the line of cars named after the city, calling it a “damaged brand.”

Read the whole thing and draw your own conclusion. My point is that, to Krugman, this problem must somehow be the fault of those evil tax-cutting Republicans, who are to blame for everything.

Exactly how Krugman will blame the Euro crisis on the GOP, I don’t know, but surely he’ll find a way. He’s got a Nobel Prize, you know.

Silvio Plays The ‘I May Be Incompetent, But I Am All You Have Got’ Card

by Smitty

We need a term for this argument. How about Argumentum ad Gasbagam?

Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi appealed for his political survival Thursday, telling parliament that his government is the only credible alternative to help guide the country through the growing sovereign debt crisis.
Berlusconi’s 3 1/2-year-old government faces a confidence vote Friday that will test if the premier retains a majority in Parliament. If the vote fails, Berlusconi must step down.

If I achieve any success as a blogger, I hope it is convincing people that liberty means ratcheting down the importance of government in general, and specific government figures in particular, to their minimum level of importance.

As I was attempting to articulate to Melissa Clouthier on Twitter the other day, the notion of people making themselves indispensable, itself, is the problem. Take the income tax. Take a fire axe to the income tax. Liberty will mean prying the cold, undead fingers of the government away from your wallet entirely, not electing somebody who promises reform in the form of an adjusted grip on the buttock.

When somebody tries to say you need them, the question needs to be: what are you doing to make the as simple as possible?

Update: speaking of that card:

EU President Van Rompuy Continues Playing Whack-A-Mole, When Whack-A-Budget Is Needed

by Smitty (h/t Memorandum via Google Reader)

Reuters reports:

European Council President Herman Van Rompuy has called an emergency meeting of top officials dealing with the euro zone debt crisis for Monday morning, reflecting concern that the crisis could spread to Italy, the region’s third largest economy.
European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet will attend the meeting along with Jean-Claude Juncker, chairman of the region’s finance ministers, European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and Olli Rehn, the economic and monetary affairs commissioner, three official sources told Reuters.
Van Rompuy’s spokesman Dirk De Backer said: “It’s a coordination, not a crisis meeting.” He added that Italy would not be on the agenda and declined to say what would be discussed.

Yeah, when Van Rompuy says “It’s a coordination, not a crisis meeting,” that’s a code phrase to his wife, meaning: “Honey, please bring me a change of underwear.”
For those not paying attention to EU politics outside of the Greeks imitating Wisconsin, Nigel Farange provides an ‘introduction’ of sorts:
My take: we need to hire Nigel to cross-examine Ben Bernanke. Nigel strikes, I think, a most appropriate tone for un-elected, over-powered officials.
