National Offend a Feminist Week 2012

Posted on | May 7, 2012 | 141 Comments

Did somebody say “War on Women”? OK, we’re not actually anti-woman. More like, anti-Women’s Studies majors. Which is why, for the fourth consecutive year, we are pleased once more to inaugurate this annual festival of fun, quoting the immortal words of our charter:

Hey, sweetheart, when I say “bring me a cup of coffee,” I mean bring me fresh coffee, OK?

Ever since we began this yearly celebration in 2009, it has been necessary to explain that we do not endorse wife-spanking. Unless she needs it.

Most of the time, however, spanking is unnecessary, because our wives know to bring us fresh coffee. That’s why we married them, right? And, of course, because our wives have a sense of humor.

Q. How many feminists does it take to screw in a light bulb?
A. That’s not funny!

Joking at the expense of feminists, however, has become increasingly dangerous. Earlier this year, the Southern Poverty Law Center added “misogyny” to his hate-group listings, so it’s probably a civil-rights violation to laugh at these jokes. And you’re a sexual predator if you talk to an atheist feminist in a hotel elevator.

The empowering message of feminism is that all women are victims.

Victimhood is synonymous with power. To deny women their victimhood is therefore to re-victimize and disempower them.

Don’t laugh: Somebody once laughed at Ashley Judd’s puffy face, and we’ve been suffering from her empowered victimhood ever since.

As usual, National Offend a Feminist Week ends on Mother’s Day Oppressed Victims of Patriarchy Day, when millions of womyn are painfully reminded of what happens when they are deprived of “choice.”

WARNING: If you are offended by images of how women were victimized before they had The Right to Choose, DO NOT CLICK THIS LINK!

Gruesome, isn’t it? And speaking of gruesome, Amanda Marcotte:

A lot of conservatives have taunted me personally with assumptions that I’m constantly getting abortions with my slutty slut self, so you can see why people who also believe that Obama is a covert agent might think there’s some secret underground conspiracy of feminists to emasculate men by secretly stealing away the womb fruit that proves their American seed works. The 4 million proof-their-fathers-had-sex-things we call babies born a year are seen as the rare escapees from the pro-choice conspiracy to wipe out all proof of American virility.

Making fun of Amanda Marcotte is simple: Just quote her.

Also, remember that Amanda Marcotte once believed — indeed, she was paid to proclaim — that John Edwards should be elected president. Never mind his disgusting adultery and love-child breeding. What is truly disgusting, Ms. Marcotte informs us, is that Edwards is being prosecuted for misusing campaign funds.

Victimhood is power, remember? Edwards is a victim, and therefore powerful. And powerful men are sexy!

Do you suspect that Amanda Marcotte craves John Edwards’s seed? Will you ever forgive me for suggesting that nauseating mental image?

Speaking of nauseating images: Women gazing with awe at Obama!

Today is Monday, which gives bloggers a full seven days for spitefully mocking feminism and everything feminists admire or cherish. Just don’t forget to link back here, so we can aggregate your courageous efforts. And don’t forget to shop our Amazon Mother’s Day specials, so we can make a shameless capitalist profit from this enterprise.

Democrats Against Journalism?

Posted on | May 6, 2012 | 13 Comments

Michael Delaney is a Democrat who is attorney general of New Hampshire. James O’Keefe is a journalist who exposed the fact that it was possible for dead people to vote in New Hampshire.

In reaction to O’Keefe’s blockbuster investigative report, the New Hampshire legislature enacted a voter ID law.

Michael Delaney tried to serve a subpoena on O’Keefe.

We support James O’Keefe.

Republicans in New Hampshire demanded Delaney’s resignation last month. They now have a new reason to repeat their demands.

An Apparent Misunderstanding

Posted on | May 6, 2012 | 47 Comments

Some people are evidently as stupid as Tommy Christopher, and must have things explained to them like school children. For the record:

  1. My post Thursday afternoon, published 17 hours after HuffPo claimed there was a meeting Wednesday on Capitol Hill, was a strenuous denial that any such meeting ever took place; anyone who thought it was something else clearly has reading comprehension problems.
  2. I provided a list of conservative writers — or, as Al Franken called them, “Lying Liars Who Lie” — who obviously can’t be trusted, if they were to claim that any such meeting took place.
  3. I specifically disclaimed having been in attendance at The Meeting That Never Happened, contrary to what any of those Lying Liars Who Lie might (hypothetically) claim.
  4. Why do liberals at HuffPo and BuzzFeed think they can trust Lying Liars Who Lie to tell them the truth about a meeting that (a) was off-the-record, and (b) never actually happened?

Friendly advice: Never let ’em see you sweat. Remember you have the right to remain silent. And if you can’t dazzle them with brilliance . . .

UPDATE: Corrected an error. I had thought the alleged meeting was Thursday, but in fact, the allegation was that a meeting occurred on Wednesday, which of course, it didn’t.

Don’t worry — my alibi is airtight either way.

UPDATE II: Doug at Daley Gator is mildly annoyed that he never gets invited to meetings that don’t happen.

‘Silence’ Calls For Simon And Garfunkel

by Smitty

Hello Stalin, my old friend
I’ve come to talk with you again
Because a Romney softly creeping
Left hids seeds while I was sleeping
Capitalism planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence

In restless dreams I taxed alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
‘Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my ‘prompter to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a Friedman quote
That got my goat
And touched the sound of silence

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
Composites talking without speaking
Legislators voting without reading
People writing budgest that voices never share
And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silence

“Fools”, said I, “You do not know
My power like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might fool you
Take my arms that I might con you”
But my words, like campaign promises fell
And echoed
In the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To propaganda god they made
And the blogs flashed out their warning
In the posts that the were forming
And the post said, “‘Silence’ Calls For Simon And Garfunkel:
A Parody Swell”
And whispered in the sounds of silence

France To U.S.: We Will Make The Election Of Obama Seem Smart

According to Breitbart, Nicolas the Short has been ousted in favor of Francois Holland. Holland seems to favor:

  • raise taxes (including a marginal tax rate for earnings above $1 million to 75%),
  • lower retirement age, and
  • boost spending levels

I suppose that’s one reaction to economic reality: deny it categorically.
Zerohedge plays the Ancien Régime card:One is tempted to call this a common dog, but the pharaohs weren't commoners.
Free-associating, the Egyptian motif recalls Napoleon and the Rosetta Stone, which gets us to Frank Zappa and the perfect goodbye song/employment suggestion for Sarkozy: A Little Green Rosetta at the Utility Muffin Research Kitchen:
On a possibly related note, the Greeks don’t seem to be dealing with reality well, either. This is a great time to get everything you can out of the stock market, according to Sissypuss the Blog Kitty.

It’s not over until it’s over, but the fact that the Boston Herald is even floating this kind of question would seem to indicate that Sean Beilat is putting the polling hurt on Joe Kennedy:

Arianna’s Power Scaled Back at AOL?

Posted on | May 6, 2012 | 21 Comments

Remember when AOL bought Huffington Post — for a “bazillion dollars,” as Joe Coscarelli says — and everybody’s first question was, “On what planet does this deal make basic business sense?”

Here you had the erstwhile America Online, which had made big bucks back in the original 1990s Internet boom, when dial-up modems were still the deal, before Gmail, before you bought high-speed digital access through your cable company (or logged on at free WiFi hotspots). Having failed to exploit its original massive footprint in the online world, AOL decided to buy HuffPo, a content provider that has “succeeded” — i.e., getting lots of page-views — without ever turning a profit on that traffic.

What’s the value of a money-losing content provider to a desperate declining online service provider? Such were the calculations required to make sense of AOL reportedly paying $315 for HuffPo’s estimated 25 million monthly “unique visitors.” Maybe you need an MBA to figure that out, or maybe I just didn’t do enough drugs back in the ’70s, because it made no damned sense at all to me. Reacting to the $315 million pricetag, I asked: “Did they misplace the decimal point?”

What it looked like, frankly, was the old pump-and-dump mentality of the Dot-Com Bubble era, hyping a start-up company to sell at an inflated price to an investor with more money than sense. And the suits at AOL certainly fit that description. As I noted at the time of the deal, AOL had reported losses of $782 million in 2010. These guys are experts at losing money, so therefore it made perfect sense for AOL to pay 10 times HuffPo’s 2010 estimated gross revenue (not profit, mind you, just revenue) and let Arianna “take control of all of AOL’s editorial content as president and editor in chief of a newly created Huffington Post Media Group,” with “oversight not only of AOL’s national, local and financial news operations,” but even such services as Mapquest.

As might have been expected, that bizarre arrangement couldn’t last long, and there was a report this week that Arianna’s vast powers have recently been somewhat curtailed:

Arianna Huffington acknowledged Thursday that her portfolio at AOL Inc. is being scaled back to include only the Huffington Post, undoing a structure put in place when her website was acquired by AOL last year. . . .
After buying the Huffington Post for $315 million, AOL gave Ms. Huffington editorial oversight of all its properties, including tech-news site TechCrunch, the patch.com network of local news sites, MovieFone and MapQuest. In addition, more than 30 AOL properties, such as Politics Daily, were absorbed by the Huffington Post. The management structure created tensions with staff at some of the properties. Patch management, for instance, differed with Ms. Huffington over strategy for the local news sites, according to people familiar with the matter. TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington quit in a public spat with Ms. Huffington.

Ah, remember that news last September? My headline at the time:

Arianna Huffington Fires Tech Blogger
AOL Paid $30 Million to Buy Out

TechCrunch was a valuable property, because Michael Arrington was a valuable blogger, and the fact that he was willing to walk away from a brand he had created was one of those “Houston, we have a problem” moments, a signal that whatever skills Arianna Huffington brought to AOL, personnel management wasn’t one of them.
