Da Tech Guy Covering Herman Cain’s Appearance Today in Nashua, N.H.

Posted on | November 17, 2011 | 67 Comments

The founder of the Axis of Fedora is on the scene and reports a discernible difference in the size and scale of the event compared to when he covered Herman Cain a couple of months ago.

Pete promises updates and I’ll try to add more.

UPDATEUnion-Leader columnist John Di Staso:

Cain’s campaign told the New Hampshire Union Leader it wanted no videotaping of his interview, scheduled for this morning, with New Hampshire Union Leader Publisher Joseph McQuaid, editorial page director Andrew Cline and this reporter.
C-SPAN videotaped and broadcast on its network and website our recent interviews with Romney, Perry and Santorum.
Was the Cain “no-video” demand related to the Milwaukee paper’s video, which the Cain campaign suggested was presented “out of context in some measure” (a charge the Journal-Sentinel’s editor strongly denied)? Or was it just a coincidence?
We may never know.
His national communications director did not return our call yesterday seeking a simple explanation of why they didn’t want C-SPAN in the room.
And as of late yesterday, it was very much up in the air whether the scheduled 60-minute interview was going to take place at all.
The only public event on Cain’s schedule today is a rally at the Radisson Hotel in Nashua.

Cain was a “no show” for the interview, Di Staso subsequently reported:

After confusion arose over whether the interview had been cancelled, Cain’s campaign apparently scheduled another event at roughly the same time and said Cain could appear at the newspaper for only 20 minutes.
Publisher Joseph McQuaid rejected the suggestion, telling the campaign that if Cain could not appear for the full 60 minutes, then there would be no interview.
McQuaid said today that 20 minutes was not enough time for a “formal, sit-down interview” during which he and other newspaper staff “size up” the candidates.
About 45 minutes after Cain’s 10 a.m. appointment, Union Leader Senior Political Reporter John DiStaso received a brief telephone message from Cain New Hampshire spokesman Charlie Spano.
“I hope we can connect in the future,” Spano said. Spano did not return our additional call seeking further comment.

So much for that, I reckon.

‘Gentleman’ Jim Moran Appreciates Him Some Real Nice Assets

Via email from Patrick Murray, Peter Schweizer drops the dime on ‘Gentleman’ Jim, the large-looming lickspittle at 3:10

90.

Trades.

In.

A.

Day?

This helps explain the following, seemingly innocuous remark by ‘Gentleman’ Jim from just last month:

You can’t acquire financial security through earned income today; the only way you do it is by having an appreciating asset.

Oh, Mr. Moran, you utter and complete piece of work. I am confident you have some Olympic-grade mental gymnastics whereby you feel you are somehow justified in being such a disgusting thief. Just retire, you sorry man. Go somewhere, drain the swamp that is your soul, beg the Almighty for forgiveness, and devote your life to penance. For, while this is a rather large cockroach in your career, as with PMA, we sort of infer with confidence that it’s no more than the tip of a Michael Moore-sized iceberg.
Read Schweizer’s book, and support Patrick Murray’s effort to emancipate Virginia in particular, and the United States in general, from this foul, disgusting creature. The honest citizens of Virginia’s 8th Congressional District need to band together against ‘Gentleman’ Jim and his pack of sycophants (who, doubtless, get their cut of the plunder) that have held Northern Virginia in an evil grip for the last couple of decades.

#OWS Protester Discovers Free Speech Doesn’t Cover Firebombing Macy’s

Posted on | November 17, 2011 | 18 Comments

Man identified by police as Nkrumah Tinsley, 29

Not the sharpest tool in the shed:

A protester was arrested in Zuccotti Park Wednesday after he threatened to fire bomb the city — and his rant went viral on YouTube, police said.
Nkrumah Tinsley, 29, was busted after cops saw a video of him claiming he would torch the city during Thursday’s mass protest posted online, police said.
“On the 17th (of Nov.), we’re going to burn New York City to the f—ing ground,” an angry Tinsley told a crowd of demonstrators in the video posted on Tuesday.
“In a few days, you’re going to see what a Molotov cocktail can do to Macy’s.”
When officers from the NYPD’s intelligence division saw the video, they immediately began working on trying to identify the raging man, police said.

And now, the exclamation point on the sentence:

Tinsley’s parents described their son as mentally ill and [said he] recently started leaving the family’s University Heights, Bronx, home to support protesters downtown.
“I was really happy — he was going meeting people and talking to others, instead of sitting in his room talking to himself,” said his father, James Jacob, 66.

I’m sure the Occupy Wall Street leaders will seize on this datum to say, “Well, see, he really wasn’t one of us. He just showed up.” Except for the fact that, while Nkrumah was ranting, he was collecting high-fives from those around him:

What does it say about your movement when your protests attract 29-year-old schizophrenics who would otherwise be at their parents’ homes, sitting in their rooms, talking to themselves? Or perhaps sitting in Congress, talking to the media.

UPDATE: John at Verum Serum compiles a list of reported crimes involving the “Occupy” movement. Has it occurred to anyone — it has certainly occurred to me — that a movement which attacks capitalism and condemns profit as theft must necessarily, by its essential nature, be lawless?

To argue (or to chant) that private property is illegitimate, and that the rich should be viewed as predatory criminals, is a message guaranteed to attract the very worst sort of people with the worst sort of motives.

In Praise Of Maxine Waters

by Smitty

There seems to be some dismay at good ol’ Maxine over her hyper-pragmatic, realpolitik view of the #Occupy movement:

When asked to comment Wednesday about the deaths and crimes that have occurred around Occupy protests being held across the country, Rep. Maxine Waters said “that’s life and it happens.”

Now, I call that a refreshing burst of pure honesty.

We have truly soulless politicians by the bushel on Capitol Hill; ones who swap masks like thespians in some ancient Greek play that is tragedy one moment, comedy the next. Is it not refreshing to have a politician drop the mask, and say it like it is? To paraphrase, “You could stuff me full of chittum bark, and I still wouldn’t give a chit.” You call that soullessness, I call it telling it like it is.

Now, kn@ppster may calibrate me on the point, but I daresay that Maxine has a proper, Constitutional outlook on display here. The federal government is in no way chartered to care fig #1 about individuals as such. By this I mean that the “general welfare” is not the “Smitty welfare”. My heart will one day beat its last. “That’s life and it happens,” to quote Maxine of Headroom. As inevitable as taxes, this demise.

And yet, our government has made a mostly failing business this last century out of mis-interpreting this “general welfare” clause into an occasion for chronic wealth distribution. Note the word chronic. I am by no means arguing against equipping an outfit like a FEMA to handle acute issues that happen at low frequency to non-specific clumps of folks.

You go, Maxine. This #Occupy comment marks what I sincerely hope is a Road to Damascus moment. I’m Syria-s. Say hello to Bashar al-Assad when you arrive. It’s OK if you stay.

SOTD: Exactly What You Wanted

An Advice Columnist Who Obviously Never Knew Me Back in the Day

Posted on | November 16, 2011 | 47 Comments

“Another flaw in the [friends with benefits] scenario is that the older generations haven’t learned how to have casual sex. For people in their 40’s and older, the standard for relationships has been monogamous marriage. While that may not be the right thing for everyone to do, it’s what we’ve been taught. So when a person wants to try something different, they’re navigating uncharted territory.”
Johanna Lyman

This startling assertion was enough to get a reaction from Professor Glenn Reynolds, who is about the same age as me and who, I guess, was doing more than studying law all the time back in the day. My temptation to start telling stories about the 1970s and ’80s is tempered by the suspicion that Ms. Lyman would never believe half of it.

However, it never occurred to me that “how to have casual sex” was some sort of arcane skill that had to be learned, as if practicioners thereof were teachers instructing novices in the grand mystery.

We were just young and restless and bored. Livin’ by the sword . . .

UPDATE: Welcome, Instapundit readers!

UPDATE II: Linked by Moe Lane and Bill Quick — both of whom are probably old enough to remember when “friends with benefits” was known simply as fornication.

‘After The Baby, My Wife And I Have Been In Sweatpants Purgatory’

Boy, did I get beat with the Life Imitates Art stick. Standing there next to the telly, holding the World’s Youngest Blogger, when Up All Night comes on.
The two fellas are down at the playground, discussing how their sex lives are going. Will Forte, on the right, delivers the utterly devastating post title line. I will leave to your imagination what I happened to be wearing at the moment.

For his part though, Tim Pawlenty took it as gracefully as an Iowa straw poll. Glad his acting career picked up after dropping out of the Presidential race.

Three and a half months is not too young to start explaining these brutal facts of life to the World’s Youngest Blogger. He really likes standing at this young age. Life will beat him down: oh yes, it will.

How Bad Is Newt Gingrich?

Posted on | November 16, 2011 | 60 Comments

Bad enough that Ann Coulter would rather have Mitt Romney win:

So now, apparently, we have to go through the cycle of the media pushing Newt Gingrich. This is going to be fantastic.
In addition to having an affair in the middle of Clinton’s impeachment; apologizing to Jesse Jackson on behalf of J.C. Watts — one of two black Republicans then in Congress –- for having criticized “poverty pimps,” and then inviting Jackson to a State of the Union address; cutting a global warming commercial with Nancy Pelosi; supporting George Soros’ candidate Dede Scozzafava in a congressional special election; appearing in public with the Rev. Al Sharpton to promote nonspecific education reform; and calling Paul Ryan’s plan to save Social Security “right-wing social engineering,” we found out this week that Gingrich was a recipient of Freddie Mac political money. . . .

Read the whole thing. Unlike Chairman Ann, I have not yet conceded Romney’s inevitability, although I have previously stated that if we wake up on the morning of Feb. 1 — after the Florida primary — to find ourselves faced with a choice between Mitt and Newt, I’ll endorse Mitt.

There is, however, yet hope that we can avoid such a dire predicament: Either Herman Cain will pull a miraculous recovery or, if that doesn’t work out, Rick Santorum will finally get his shot.

I realize that some of my friends are saying “Slim just left town,” but the one certain thing is that Republicans will never nominate Gingrich, no matter what the polls say today.

They may be the Stupid Party, but let’s hope they’re not that stupid.
