I Must Be Missing Something

The President can override Congress on having various staff Czars with a signing statement, but he can’t close Guantanamo Bay, in accordance with his campaign promises. What if BHO had had a Guantanamo Bay Czar? What would that guy do?
Ace of Spades and Bill Kristol

You’ve got to admit that’s a pretty cool mental image: Ace of Spades talking 2012 presidential politics with Bill Effing Kristol at the Breitbart book party. It’s probably just a mattter of time now before we see Kristol on TV telling Fred Barnes, “Well, I admit you’ve got a point there, Fred, but as Ace of Spades says . . .”

VIDEO: Victim of Beating Says McDonald’s Attackers ‘Spit in My Face’
Posted on | April 23, 2011 | 13 Comments
You saw her get beaten, and now she speaks for herself:
A transgender woman brutally beaten at a Baltimore County McDonald’s spoke out on Saturday, saying that the attack was “definitely a hate crime” and that she’s been afraid to leave the house ever since.
“They said, ‘That’s a dude, that’s a dude and she’s in the female bathroom,'” said Chrissy Lee Polis, who’s 22 and said she stopped at the Rosedale restaurant to use the restroom. “They spit in my face.” . . .
Polis, who said she had a sex change operation to become a woman, said this isn’t the first time that she’s been picked on — physically — because of her sexual identity. . . .
Polis, who has a criminal record that includes charges of prostitution and property destruction, said she plans to take legal action against the restaurant.
“My record’s got nothing to do with what happened in McDonald’s,” she said. “Anyone in my predicament should not be afraid to walk the streets. They should not have to go into a restaurant and get gawked at and made fun of. They shouldn’t be afraid to leave the house. It’s just wrong.”
Women Are Mean to Me

Little Miss Attila accuses me of advocating “sex-segregated Puritan libertinism.” What I was actually doing, of course, was having fun at the expense of spoilsport Caitlin Flanagan.
But let’s face it: I have too much fun.
Amanda Marcotte also decided to take a poke at me, for which I’m grateful, since she thereby called my attention to a very interesting article in Marie Claire magazine:
As Amanda Clark, 33, a caterer from Boston, walked down the aisle toward her fiancé, wearing a $15,000 gown and a 7-carat ring, she felt nothing but dread. I don’t want to go through with this, she thought, with each step toward the altar. . . .
After five years and two kids, Clark got divorced and, because the article is from a women’s magazine, you know that this anecdote must be part of a trend to be demonstrated by social-science statistics:
Clark is hardly the first woman to say “I do” when her heart wasn’t in it. According to recent research conducted by Jennifer Gauvain, a therapist in Denver, 30 percent of now-divorced women say they knew in their gut they were making a mistake as they walked down the aisle — and kept walking anyway. Only a handful backed out. The obvious question: If you know you’re marrying the wrong guy, why do it?
Note the unspoken premise: If your marriage fails, it is because you married “the wrong guy.” There is nothing wrong with you — no, you merely made a bad choice. And, remembering that this article comes from a women’s magazine, you should blame society for your mistake:
“Women are raised with an unrealistic impression of what love is supposed to look like,” says Gauvain. “Girls read fairy tales where the woman gets saved by the prince, and when they’re older, the same message is enforced through romantic comedies where love always prevails, despite impossible scenarios. So women learn that love can always work, even when it’s unhealthy.”

Credit Where Due To The ACLU

Part of being an anti-Alinsky is recognizing legitimate good work, even if by those with whom one is often antagonistic. So here’s a Good Onya to the ACLU, courtesy of Volokh, for pointing out that Free Speech is more important than anyone’s willingness to assume the bully posture over purported insults.
Keep up the good work, ACLU, and consider some of the other distortions of civil liberties loose in the wild these days, e.g. ObamaCare.
Libya: Qaddafi’s Forces Reportedly Withdrawing from Misrata
Posted on | April 23, 2011 | 1 Comment
Note that this news is not yet confirmed:
Col. Muammar el-Qaddafi’s forces began to withdraw from the besieged western city of Misurata on Saturday, a rebel spokesman said, the first stage of a plan announced by the government to turn the fighting there over to tribal supporters.
As rebel leaders in the east claimed victory, fighters fired automatic weapons in the air and supporters blared car horns in celebration here in the provisional rebel capital. But the news of a withdrawal could not be independently confirmed, and there were still reports of heavy fighting in Misurata on Saturday.
Here is a video report on the same story:
