So I was going to do a joke about the site being sold to Huffington Post, but I’m still fighting this infection, plus :effort:
More seriously, I’m getting a flood of links and Substackery every weekend, to the point where Monday’s linkagery gets to be a real slog. How do people feel about a Sunday edition? Lump it together with Rule 5 Sunday? Do you want to know more?
Also, it’s election day in Florida and Wisconsin. Get out and vote!

Want My DNA? Get a Warrant

Posted on | March 28, 2025 | Comments Off on Want My DNA? Get a Warrant

The Fifth Amendment protects me against self-incrimination — that’s what the Miranda warning is all about, and I committed that to memory long before I ever found myself in handcuffs, but this is not the time or place to be regaling you with tales of my juvenile delinquency. No, I’m here to talk about the bankruptcy of 23andMe, a company that enjoyed a meteoric surge of popularity before it came crashing down for several reasons, including the “Golden State Killer” case.

There’s this thing called forensic genealogy, where investigators can compare a DNA sample taken at a crime scene to DNA in databases and, even if there is no direct match, they can narrow down the possible suspects by using the DNA of their relatives. A criminal might have gotten away scot-free with his evil deeds, but unfortunately for him, his Aunt Bessie got a 23andMe kit for Christmas a few years ago and . . .

Look, I can understand the curiosity factor. Wouldn’t it be fun to find out you’re more Cherokee than Elizabeth Warren? Or, in my case, that I really am descended from Rollo the Viking? Having scientific proof of your ancestry would be nice, but what happens after the testing company dumps your DNA into a database somewhere? It’s not difficult to imagine the downside risks and, even if none of your cousins turns out to be a serial killer, there might be other unintended consequences.

However much I might desire the genetic evidence sufficient to flaunt my pedigree — e.g., the Crusdader prince of Antioch alleged to be a distant ancestor — you’re not going to trick me into sending off a DNA sample that might get sold to the highest bidder for who knows what purpose.

Ed Driscoll linked to an interesting column about the 23andMe bankruptcy, and that inspired me to add my own two cents:

A robust sense of identity is a sort of inoculation against the “Woke Mind Virus,” which explains a lot about the bizarre fascination with DNA testing that took hold after Oprah Winfrey’s 2017 recommendation of 23andMe. Kat Rosenfield examines “the tale of a zeitgeist fueled by both the self-loathing of white liberals and a reflexive anti-Americanism throughout the mainstream.” A major reason many white liberals were so interested in 23andMe was because of the possibility that they might learn they weren’t 100% white. If they could only find a single percentage point of ancestry that was non-European, they could identify as Official Victims of Oppression. . . .

Aspiring Rapper Update

Posted on | March 26, 2025 | 1 Comment

Say hello to Torkilo Hambrick and, while you’re at it, go ahead and say good-bye, because Torkilo probably won’t be back on the streets anytime soon. Torkilo is a career criminal from Memphis who made the mistake of committing serious felonies in Lonoke County, Arkansas — where Donald Trump got 76% of the vote in the last election.

By contrast, in Memphis – Shelby County — Kamala Harris got 62% of the vote, which may go a long way toward explaining why Torkilo Hambrick wasn’t already behind bars. Elect Democrats, and criminals go free, and you know how they say a career criminal has a record “as long as your arm”? Your arms aren’t long enough for Torkilo Hambrick’s criminal record. He’s been stacking up felonies since 2012. Domestic violence, drug possession, drug dealing, aggravated assault, statutory rape — and these are just the convictions. There’s more than a dozen other charges, including felon in possession of a handgun, that got dropped, probably in plea bargains. What’s astonishing is how few years there are without any new arrests, meaning that Torkilo never did any serious prison time, despite being a demonstrable menace to society.

Perhaps you noticed the tattoos on his face? Like a cry for help: “Please put me in prison! I’m a convicted sex offender with tattoos on my face!” And yet, despite his numerous convictions, Torkilo Hambrick wasn’t behind bars. He also wasn’t in Memphis. His whereabouts were unknown and he had an outstanding warrant for violating probation. Apparently, he’d been hiding out and dealing drugs somewhere around Little Rock, until he made the mistake of trying to outrun the Arkansas State Police.

NEVER RUN FROM THE ARKANSAS STATE POLICE!

Dear God, don’t these people have access to YouTube? There are entire channels devoted to videos of Arkansas troopers ramming criminals off the road in high-speed PIT maneuvers. But I suppose if you’re stupid enough to get tattoos on your face, you’re too stupid to realize that you’ve got no chance of eluding the Arkansas State Police:

HAZEN, Ark. — A 29-year-old Memphis woman died as a result of injuries she sustained in a wreck following a high-speed pursuit on eastbound Interstate 40.
On Tuesday, March 25, 2025, an Arkansas State Police (ASP) Trooper observed a white Dodge Ram pickup truck committing a traffic violation near the Interstate 40 173-mile marker in Lonoke County. After initiating a traffic stop, the vehicle fled, leading to an eastbound pursuit that covered 18 miles.
The suspect was endangering the lives of other motorists by exceeding 120 mph and passing vehicles on the right shoulder.
A Trooper executed a Tactical Vehicle Intervention (TVI) on the suspect vehicle near the 191-mile marker near Hazen in Prairie County, causing the truck to overturn and come to rest in a ditch beside the interstate.
Laterrika Woods, 29, of Memphis, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.
“This tragedy is a direct result of the suspect’s reckless, selfish actions. This is another example of what can happen when a suspect flees from law enforcement,” said ASP Col. Mike Hagar. “Fleeing suspects are terrorizing and traumatizing our communities. Our Troopers will not and cannot look the other way.”
Another passenger, Latarica Walker, 26, of Memphis, was ejected and airlifted to Baptist Medical Center, where she remains in critical condition.
The driver, Torkilo Hambrick, 30, and passenger Zuri Jones, 45, both from Memphis, were transported to UAMS and are currently in stable condition.
Charges are pending against Hambrick in Woods’ death.
During the investigation, Troopers discovered two firearms, an unknown amount of U.S. currency, a bottle of promethazine, marijuana, and narcotics in the vehicle. Hambrick was found to have an outstanding extradition warrant from Shelby County, Tennessee, for probation violation. Hambrick is a registered sex offender.

Yeah, if you’ve got an outstanding warrant, two firearms and a felony stash of drugs in your vehicle, stay away from Lonoke County. As a matter of fact, you’d be advised to avoid Arkansas altogether.

You were wondering where the Aspring Rapper angle was, right?

The sister of a Memphis rapper died after Arkansas State Police (ASP) crashed the car she was in during a police chase.
ASP said 29-year-old Laterrika Woods, the sister of Memphis rapper Big Boogie, whose real name is John Lotts, died after the police chase and crash in Hazen, Arkansas, on Tuesday. . . .
Big Boogie shared the news of his sister’s death on Instagram, sharing pictures of the two of them with the caption “I Love You Sister. Tears. Tears. Tears. I’m Logging Off Today.”

Had you ever heard of John “Big Boogie” Lotts before? No, because unlike me, you’re not attuned to the hip-hop culture, so you don’t know that he is “a member of Yo Gotti’s Collective Music Group (CMG). . . . Big Boogie is a key figure in Southern rap, blending raw energy with unforgettable anthems.” A key figure, y’all! And before I highlight some other relevant information about Big Boogie’s career, let me remind you of the Urban Dictionary definition:

Aspiring Rapper
North American euphemism for a member of the urban criminal class. This unusual occupation is usually mentioned in conjunction with the subject either being slain or being taken into custody for a violent or property-related crime. A relative of the subject usually points out that the subject’s demise or incarceration comes at an extremely inopportune moment, occurring just as the subject was “turning they(sic) life around.”

So now, more information about John “Big Boogie” Lotts:

Apr. 9, 2021
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – Investigators are continuing to sort through evidence in connection with the arrest of 24 people in North Mississippi including a well-known Memphis rapper for allegedly shooting at another driver on Interstate 55.
Memphis rapper Big Boogie whose real name is John Lotts is charged with one felony, according to an affidavit, after his entourage was arrested Thursday while driving to a concert in Biloxi. . . .
The Senatobia Police Department said they performed a coordinated takedown of a caravan for Memphis area rapper Big Boogie whose real name is John Lotts.
According to Senatobia Police, Lotts’ caravan was on the way to a concert in Biloxi when a victim also driving on Interstate 55 near Coldwater claims someone in Big Boogie’s entourage shot at them.
Multiple police agencies arrested 21 people on Highway 6.
Three people additionally were arrested near Coldwater. . . .
This is not Lotts’s first arrest.
In May of 2020, Memphis Police arrested and charged Lotts with attempted murder after he and an accomplice allegedly shot a man outside a club on North Watkins.
Investigators say the shooting allegedly started over a disagreement between two rap groups.

And now Big Boogie’s sister has died because she was riding in a truck full of felonies, driven by a sex offender with tattoos on his face who thought he could outrun the Arkansas State Police.

Torkilo Hambrick will probably get life in prison for this, and I’m sure Big Boogie will have a hit song paying tribute to his deceased sister, “blending raw energy with unforgettable anthems.” He’s a key figure, y’all.
