FMJRA 2.0: Giant Killers

Well, we lost the series opener at the Polo Grounds (Carl Morton getting stuck with his second loss) but came back strong in the second and third games. Even without the designated hitter, the Senators beat the devil and the living God out of Mike Corkins and Matt Wilcox for eleven runs and added one more off Steve Mingori while Spaceman Lee held the Jints to just three runs and went the distance for the wind. Game Three wasn’t as hit-happy; we only scored six runs off Dick Bosman and Charlie Hudson, but it was good enough for Jim Kaat to get his first win and Bob Johnson his first save. We’re 3-6, one game behind the Red Sox in the cellar of the AL Beta Division, but a lot more optimistic than we were last week.

‘There Was Never Any Evidence’: FBI Lied About White Supremacist Terrorism
Posted on | January 3, 2025 | 1 Comment
One of the hallmarks of any totalitarian regime is that the leaders proclaim obvious falsehoods — kulaks and saboteurs are to blame for the famine! — and compel everyone to repeat these lies, with punishment aimed at dissenting truth-tellers. The purpose is “not to persuade or convince, nor to inform, but to humiliate,” and once you understand this function of totalitarian propaganda, you are less surprised by the ability of someone like Christopher Wray to speak blatant lies with apparent sincerity. Only skilled liars could flourish in the Biden regime:
The “top threat we face from DVEs [Domestic Violent Extremist] continues to be those we identify as Racially or Ethnically Motivated Violent Extremists (‘RMVEs’), specifically those who advocate for the superiority of the white race,” FBI Director Christopher Wray told Senate Judiciary Committee on March 2, 2021.
“According to the intelligence community,” said Biden in 2021, “terrorism from white supremacy is the most lethal threat to the homeland today. Not ISIS, not al Qaeda — white supremacists.” . . .
Between 2012 and 2021, Islamic extremists committed five acts of domestic US terrorism that killed 77 people, whereas white supremacists committed four acts of domestic terrorism that killed 49 people. And even if the numbers were reversed, at just 12 cases of domestic terrorism, the sample size is too small to be able to claim, scientifically, any kind of discernible trend about DVE.
The total number of killings by white supremacists annually is very low. In 2022, there were only 21 homicides linked to white supremacists in the entire country. By comparison, Chicago alone saw an average of 58 homicides every month. In 2022, there were a total of 24,849 homicides. Thus, the share of them that were by white supremacists was .08%. . . .
The FBI’s claim that white supremacy was the main driver of the acts of terrorism was also misleading. Most of the white supremacist killers appeared to suffer from mental illness, whereas most of the radical Islamicists appeared sane and driven overwhelmingly by ideology. . . .
Thus, there was never any good evidence that there was a rising threat of terrorism from the political ideology of white supremacy, nor that it was greater than the threat of Islamist terrorism. And yet FBI Director Wray, President Biden, and the whole of the US IC have claimed, repeatedly, for four years, that it was. Why?
(Hat-tip: Instapundit.) The first and most obvious answer to Michael Shellenberger’s question, “Why?” is that this lie served the political agenda of the Biden regime. By portraying their opponents as allies of “white supremacists” — inherently dangerous, linked to a “lethal threat” of violent extremism — Democrats could justify repressive measures, including censorship to stifle dissent as “misinformation.” Yet because “there was nevery any evidence” for their claim about the “white supremacist” threat (no such trend could be shown from actual data), the people promoting this claim knew it was false, and also knew that other well-informed people would recognize its falsehood.
Here we come to the second answer to Shellenberger’s question: The function of propaganda as a weapon of humiliation, expressing the power of the regime by forcing others to repeat obvious falsehoods or, at least, to remain silent and pretend to believe the regime’s lies.

Terrorism on Bourbon Street
Posted on | January 2, 2025 | Comments Off on Terrorism on Bourbon Street

It was nearly 4 in the morning on New Year’s Day, but crowds of people were still celebrating on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, because celebrating until dawn is what you do when you’re in New Orleans, unless the reason you’re in New Orleans is to kill people:
The suspect accused of plowing a pickup truck through a crowd on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, killing 15 and injuring at least 30 on New Year’s Day, is named Shamsud-Din Jabbar, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The FBI also confirmed that Jabbar, whose identity was first reported by Nola.com, is 42 years old and that he was carrying an Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) flag in the vehicle.
The FBI said in a statement:
The subject has been identified as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a U.S. citizen from Texas. He was driving a Ford pickup truck, which appears to have been rented, and we are working to confirm how the subject came into possession of the vehicle.
An ISIS flag was located in the vehicle, and the FBI is working to determine the subject’s potential associations and affiliations with terrorist organizations.
Weapons and a potential IED were located in the subject’s vehicle. Other potential IEDs were also located in the French Quarter. The FBI’s special agent bomb technicians are working with our law enforcement partners to determine if any of these devices are viable, and they will work to render those devices safe.
The agency said it was investigating the attack as an act of terrorism, and are “aggressively running down all leads to identify any possible associates of the subject.”
When I woke up Wednesday morning and first heard about this incident, I did not immediately think “terrorism.” My office TV was tuned to ESPN, however, and as noon approached, the announcers mentioned that players in town for the Sugar Bowl (between Notre Dame and Georgia) had been locked down in their hotel rooms. My thought: “Whoa!” You don’t do that because of some random case of road rage. Eventually, the game that had been scheduled for 8 p.m. ET New Year’s Day got rescheduled for 4 p.m. ET today. The reason for extra precaution soon became obvious: First, the guy’s Muslim-sounding name and flying the ISIS flag. Second, the use of explosive devices, and third, the reports that Jabbar apparently had accomplices in his crime: “We do not believe that Jabbar was solely responsible, . . . We are aggressively running down every lead including those of his known associates.”
Perhaps another reason they postponed the Sugar Bowl is that the FBI needed time to see if there was any connection between Jabbar’s deadly attack and the car-bomb attack at the Trump resort in Las Vegas, which happened just a few hours later and was committed by a former Green Beret who was stationed at Fort Bragg in approximately the same time-frame as Jabbar. Both of these guys being military veterans, and both striking on the same day? Both using electric vehicles rented through the same online app? Maybe just a coincidence, but maybe not.
