Kim Jong’s Illness Finally Takes Him

BBC News has an un-embeddable clip.
They also mention that Kim Jong Il’s son, the apparent new leader of the Norks, is a fine young orator, who, despite having a Marxist past and neither academic nor private sector credentials, and having been merely ‘present’ for a little while around the capitol, is expected to enjoy a regime propped up through muscular control of the media.

Update: American Power rounds up the headlines. Ace trots out the flaming skull to light up the North Korean darkness.

The kid spent a good part of his life abroad, so he’s seen how the
world lives. If he’s smart, he’ll open the country up, pursue
unification, and rejoin the IAEA and NPT and get rid of the nukes in
exchange for a flood of food aid.

If he acts quickly, he has enough support to start it and once it starts the people will really see him as a Beloved Leader.

Unfortunately, the odds are he will follow Bashir Assad in filling
Daddy’s shoes. There are certain ego gratifications to being a
    virtually absolute dictator.

There’s no way in hell that could ever happen even if he wanted it to happen, which I doubt he does. That system is rigged more than any other in history. If reform ever happened to South Korea, it would have to start with the military high brass, and that’s almost as unlikely as any one leader pushing it.

The military brass might wind up acting like the old Soviet Politburo, in which case reforms may happen but over a period of time.  Nobody will want to stick their neck out and do something considered rash.

That is if fatty mcbutterpants kid really becomes a figurehead.  He may turn out to be worse than Daddy…yeeesh.

Whatever the case may be, the new Kim certainly adds to NK’s average adult weight ratio.

I think the NK military is a lot more disciplined than the old Soviet Politburo, and even more controlling. Once somebody rises in the ranks they have every reason to keep the system going and absolutely no reason to make waves. That’s why the place hasn’t changed to any measurable degree over sixty some years.

I would have agreed 10 years ago, but the internal situation is starting to really unwind in NK — as witness that defection that took place a short time ago; something’s up (and it isn’t the economy).
Of course, what I was suggesting was the best case scenario — that the military leadership will decide they don’t want to follow sonny boy, in which case (and with some behind the scenes prompting from China) they lighten things up but still keep the system (and the role of being China’s buffer and pet not quite as feral dog).  Worst case is Butterpants is even more ruthless, “mercurial”, and decadent than Daddy.
