The Riot Ideology

Posted on | March 31, 2012 | 51 Comments

Yesterday, I mentioned Fred Siegel’s The Future Once Happened Here in connection with the Trayvon Martin case. Siegel’s book is one of those timeless classics — like Christopher Lasch’s The Culture of Narcissism and Thomas Sowell’s The Vision of the Anointed — that I frequently recommend as guides to understanding important social phenomena more deeply.

The Future Once Happened Here recounts how liberal policy turned three once-great American cities — New York, D.C. and L.A. — into dangerous urban nightmares, and one of the things Siegel describes is the “riot ideology” whereby organized violence (or the threat thereof) is used to intimidate officials into doing the bidding of “community leaders.”

Having recently begun re-reading Siegel’s book, the latest news in the Trayvon Martin case is both familiar and disturbing:

The feet of thousands pounded the cracked pavement of Sanford’s 13th street . . . to reiterate that apathy won’t be an option for those moved and outraged by the shooting death of an unarmed black teenager.
The Goldsboro community played host to a march and rally Saturday organized by the NAACP that brought together a coalition of national civil-rights organizers, community leaders, clergymen and droves of local residents who joined the chants demanding the arrest of George Zimmerman for Trayvon Martin’s death.
The Rev. Al Sharpton came to a podium outside Sanford Police Department headquarters amid raucous cheers from many of the roughly 1,000 participants. But he revealed few details about a plan he unveiled Friday for economic sanctions to force authorities to arrest Zimmerman.
Instead, he talked generally about sanctions against corporations that support and fund stand-your-ground laws, but didn’t name specific entities or outline strategies.
Everything is on the table for the nonviolent civil disobedience that could come in the coming days, he said. . . .
A special prosecutor has been assigned to the case and the U.S. Department of Justice has launched an investigation.
“We want an arrest. Shot in the chest,” marchers said Saturday en route to Sanford Police Department headquarters. “I am Trayvon Martin.”

Wait: A special prosecutor? A USDOJ investigation?

Why not wait and see what happens with the investigation? Why this idiotic talk of “economic sanctions” and lynch-mob mentality toward Zimmerman? Why is MSNBC letting one its on-air personalities engage in such demagogic nonsense?

If George Zimmerman is not arrested in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin soon, the Rev. Al Sharpton will call for an escalation in peaceful civil disobedience and economic sanctions.

Civil disobedience toward whom? Economic sanctions where? In Sanford? A town of 53,570 people, 45% white, 30% black and 20% Hispanic? What possible good can Sharpton’s incendiary demagoguery accomplish for the people of Sanford? And isn’t it possible that, by purposefully inflaming racial animosity, Sharpton will make matters much worse for the people of Sanford?

If you’ve read The Future Once Happened Here, you likely suspect that Sharpton’s “activism” will produce only harm for those whose cause he claims to advocate. The consequences of the “riot ideology” are sadly predictable. Meanwhile, on the other coast:

Seven black teens have been arrested on suspicion that they committed a hate crime when they attacked a 15-year-old Hispanic boy while he was walking home from school in Southern California, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
The March 14 beating in Palmdale was captured on video and posted on YouTube . . .
During the beating, the teens made racially derogatory statements that were captured on the video . . .

Perhaps Al Sharpton will call for “civil disobedience” there, too.

The Sanford stuff, and all that has gone before, has nothing to do with civil rights or justice. It’s about the wealth of Rev Al and Jesse. Both have become quite well of sucking at that teat, and they won’t stop any time soon.

The largest vein of racism in this country resides in the breasts of blacks and latinos.

[…] From Stacy McCain, Seems like the Reverend Al Sharpton is up to his old tricks again. He’s calling for an escalation in civil disobedience and “economic sanctions” against who exactly? As Stacy alluded to in his article, the Town of Sanford has a 45 % White population with the remainder being Black and Hispanic, 30 and 20% respectively. […]

Here in LA, black v.  hispanic violence is by far the most common racial violence.  But they don’t have any  money to give each other so it’s still whitey’s fault.

DOJ counts Hispanic-on-black gang crime as white-on-black crime, but have a separate category for black-on-Hispanic crime.  So if a Hispanic guy is the perp, he counts as white, but not if he is the victim.

On another site, one commenter had figures which, if correct, showed that 80% or more of the relatively small number of “white on black” crimes were committed by Hispanics.  But I forgot to note the source.

While there is definitely a racial component, an important one, I think the reality is that it is mostly gang related. Criminals fighting over turf and what not.

Sharptongue and Jesse “Baby Daddy” Jackson are just sub-contractors on this job.  Race pimping shyster lawyer Ben Crump is the author of the controversy.  If 1000 cities had to burn for him to make a buck, he’d be trucking gasoline.

It is so very sad that anyone loses their life. If I were Zimmerman, I would be very frightened. I hope to God he has good counsel.  Police Officers are good people doing a civic duty for the citizens of this country. Are there bad cops?, certainly, but they are far and few between. If it were cold blooded murder, they would have arrested him that night. It is being investigated, and again, I would be very afraid if I were Zimmerman. Vigilante justice is never the answer.

Quartermaster has it 100% correct: this is about Sharpton trying to fill Sharpton’s treasure chest and keeping himself relevant.

Now, imagine if a Fox News personality, particularly Hannity or Beck, were pulling this same stunt. For one thing, Ailes would probably fire them. 2nd, every media outlet would be calling for them to not only be fired, but prosecuted for extortion and incitement to riot.

SO, when someone assaults Zimmerman and/or kills him, will liberals like Sharpton accept the blame for what they have done?

It’s appalling to watch this brewing up. Sanford’s just a smallish city, it’s not the kind of place that can afford this madness.

The thing is, this mob demanding Zimmerman’s blood should think it through: Zimmerman has not been charged for a reason. Do they really want to leave anyone’s fate up to a mob’s howls? It could so easily be one’s self!

  17. Dianna Deeley

Arrest Sharpton for inciting to riot? I don’t know that he actually has technically, yet, but surely he’s on the cusp?

Leftists don’t want people charged for things they do that are illegal they want people prosecuted for things that the left thinks should be illegal, like white folks defending themselves when assaulted.

It’s all going to end in tears, you know. I have been silently convinced that we are barreling toward disaster since 2009, and I’m very much afraid we’re seeing it.

The thing that disgusts me beyond words is that after the “flexibility” moment, Obama is so dangerous he has to go, and this idiotic, chaotic, frankly stupid mess is going to keep that from being properly addressed.

One of the knocks (rightly) on Romney is that he will merely reduce the speed at which we are headed to the precipice from 100 MPH (Obama speed) to 90 MPH. I submit that we have already gone over the edge but that the chasm is so deep that we haven’t crashed at bottom yet. I’m shedding no tears (pointless and unproductive) the time for blood and sweat approaches.

If it happens that Mr Zimmerman actually is charged and brought to trial, what will happen if he is acquitted?  After all, even if charged, he’s innocent until proven guilty, right?

Come October, we’ll start seeing the stories, designed to intimidate white urban voters, that their cities will go up in flames if President Obama loses.

Stacy, it’s not that I disagree with you, but the groundwork for the entire socialist versus individual liberty confrontation we have was laid out by Marx.   And while he was not alone in his philosophy, he is most certainly the grandfather of communism.

That hypothetical time machine, combined with a very real pistol, is looking pretty good  right now.

As the books Stacy refers in the post and others – and strictly academic scholarship has also confirmed, the idea that the aftermath of rioting is rebuilding is just not correct.  Sure, some things are rebuilt right away, but most aren’t, it’s even hard to get the builders to go to some of these places after major rioting.

And the overwhelming amount of destruction is wrought upon the property of the poor and minorities, or on businesses and services they need in the area – which often leave and never come back.

Of course, if that happens, when it’s over Crump and Sharpton and Jackson will be back home, looking for their next opportunity to manufacture outrage by squealing racism, leaving the citizens of Sandford to fend for themselves.

Dana, Zimmerman will be charged, and probably convicted, regardless of the merits of the case. The message has been passed: “Nice little town you got here. Be a shame if the grief-stricken inheritors of MLK burned it to the ground.”

As I discussed in “The Most Racist City in America” http://wp.me/p27DAO-f2, holding a city hostage or controlling the city’s operations via a threat of riots and destruction results in lawlessness and rampant Marxism.

Crown Heights worked once for Sharpton. He is untouchable.

What’s a racially-motived murder matter to Sharpton? He wasn’t held accountable in New York for the murder of Yankel Rosenbaum, and he escaped accountability for his actions in the Tawana Brawley affair.

Florida isn’t New York, but just in case some rookie cop reads the law and arrests Sharpton, the Feds got his back.

Quite true, but let’s not ignore the other player in this game: the Left.  This is exactly the kind of tactics encouraged and promoted by groups such as ACORN, the Midwest Academy, and all of the other organizations mentioned in Stanley Kurtz’s book Radical-In-Chief.

Sowing racial tensions is all part of Left’s plan to create Chaos in American Society.

While killing Marx and Engels would have done a lot of good, Leftism was already on the rise when they wrote.  One needs to go back to the 18th Century, ask Edmund Burke for a hit list, ,then grab the old Brown Bess, and do a Sir Dirty Harry on their arses.

To the Leftist, Dianna, individuals don’t matter, what matters are the ideas, the ideology.  If some must die in order to bring about Heaven On Earth [Immanentize The Eschaton] then so be it.
