Gay Pedophile Elementary School Teacher Sentenced to 40 Years in Florida Prison

Posted on | March 19, 2014 | 66 Comments

Robert Bacca, convicted sex offender.

Last night when I used the phrase “gay pedophiles” in a headline about a child pornography ring, somebody on Twitter complained that it is politically incorrect to use “gay” and “pedophile” in the same headline, so I went hunting for another reason to do it again:

A former Teacher of the Year semifinalist for Duval County was sentenced to 40 years in prison [March 12] after pleading guilty to two counts of sexually assaulting one of his students.
Christopher Robert Bacca, 27, pleaded guilty to charges of attempted sexual battery on a child younger than 12 and lewd or lascivious molestation. . . .
Six other criminal charges against Bacca, a former Windy Hill Elementary Teacher of the Year, were dropped as part of the plea deal.
The victim told police he “showered with the suspect on more than one occasion while staying the night at his residence,” according to the fourth-grade teacher’s arrest report.
The report said the suspect touched the boy’s private parts repeatedly and performed oral sex on the boy more than once. . . .
Bacca has been in jail since he was arrested in July 2012. . . .
Bacca had been moved from his former school, Long Branch Elementary School, on recommendations by the state Department of Children and Families after the agency, along with police, investigated claims in 2009 that he had kissed a boy on the lips and had slept in the same bed with him.
[An attorney for the second victim’s family] said had the boy’s mother known about the 2009 investigation, she would not have allowed her son to be in contact with Bacca.

In order to be Fair and Balanced, however, I’ll now highlight recent reports of sex crimes by heterosexual school teachers:

Emily Nesbit, Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania —  An 11th grade English teacher resigned last week after she was accused of having sexual relations with a student at a Pennsylvania high school.
Emily Nesbit, 31, was charged with institutional sex assault, a third-degree felony, on Friday. Police said Nesbit admitted meeting an 18-year-old male student for sex in a classroom after hours at Cumberland Valley High School in Mechanicsburg.
Nesbit is charged based on her position as a teacher, without regard to the age of the student. If convicted she could face up to seven years in prison, prosecutors told ABC 27 News.

Tanikka Queen, Las Vegas, Nevada — A substitute teacher is facing a laundry list of charges after allegedly having a sexual relationship with a teenage boy.
Ultimately a hickey on the boy’s neck and not keeping a secret, led to their undoing.
Now, 22-year-old Tanikka Queen is charged with multiple counts for allegedly having a sexual affair with the 15-year-old student
Queen faces a whopping 29 charges following her arrest last week. She is the Hyde Park Middle School substitute teacher accused of having a relationship with a teen.
She is facing multiple counts of kidnapping, statutory sexual conduct and luring a child with technology, along with one count of sexual conduct between an employee and a student. . . .
The arrest follows a relationship that police said began around Valentine’s Day and lasted more than two weeks.
During that time, there were 2,400 text messages from Queen’s cellphone and more than 100 phone calls and photos exchanged.
In one message, she wrote about her true feelings for the boy, “I’m serous. I’m putting my job on the line talking to you so how can I not be serious.”

Amanda Brennan, Las Vegas, Nevada — A former high school English teacher was sentenced Tuesday in Las Vegas to five years of probation for an inappropriate relationship with a teenage student almost a year ago.
Amanda Nicole Brennan, 25, has a chance to reduce her felony conviction to a misdemeanor if she stays out of trouble. But she also faces one to four years in prison if she slips and violates the sentence imposed after her Oct. 31 guilty plea to felony charge of luring a child with intent to engage in sexual conduct.
She also has to register as a sex offender. . . .
Police had said the former Foothill High School teacher told investigators she knew it was wrong to date the boy, who was 15 years old at the time, but she did it anyway.
The boy’s parents reported that Brennan picked up the teen against their wishes and returned him home past curfew. The teen’s mother learned Brennan’s name and age from the security guard at their gated Henderson community, where Brennan had come to pick up the boy.
The teen told police that he and Brennan loved each other and had kissed twice, but only cuddled in the back of her car the night he went out without his parents’ permission.
Officials also found about 1,000 text messages between Brennan and the boy in a nine-day period before Brennan’s arrest last May 10.

David Thompson, Dade City, Florida — A Pasco County teacher is under arrest in Miami after investigators say he booked a plane trip to Belize to have sex with two underage girls.
David Wendel Thompson, 48, is a social studies teacher at Centennial Middle School in Dade City.
According to a criminal complaint, Thompson used Facebook to contact and have sexually explicit conversations with a 13-year-old and 15-year-old female.
Investigators say he booked a flight to Belize City with a layover in Miami. They say he was refused entry to Belize and arrested at the airport.
Thompson has worked for Pasco schools since 1994, according to district spokesperson Linda Cobbe.
He is charged with enticing minors, and made his first appearance in court Monday morning.

Far be it from me to suggest that gay pedophiles are more common or more dangerous than heterosexual pedophiles.

I don’t wish this to sound as if I’m diverting blame from the various perpetrators, but how do parents allow their children to be in these sorts of situations?

The victim told police he “showered with the suspect on more than one occasion while staying the night at his residence,” according to the fourth-grade teacher’s arrest report.

Who, in his right mind, allows a sleepover at a teachers house?

And Florida, the home of crazy, smacks teachers harder and publicly than other states it appears. Why they were so lenient with Kaitlyn Hunt is a mystery but probably related to the fact she wasn’t in a true position of authority over her victim. 40 years for sex with a child under 12 is a merciful sentence. A century ago, he would not even habe been arrested, simply disappeared and fed to the gators that live along the St. Johns river banks … although it is somewhat comforting to know that the attitude of the prisoners this man will be amongst is one of active distaste for “short-eyes” offenders. Remember what has happened in the prison system to notorious offenders. Believe me, inmates know your entire history, your sentence and convictions before you ever arrive to your assigned cell, often a week or so in advance of your arrival at the prison.

Stupid and uninvolved parents. As well as a deceptive school board and administration. You think the Catholic Priest scandal was bad? The public school system is several orders of magnitude worse. They know and transfer teachers quietly, promote them out of the classroom or re-assign them, the same tactics used up until the 70’s and 80’s by the Catholic Church. The number of teachers doing this crap and the complicity of their school boards and administrations in covering up these abuses of our most vulnerable.

According to Dr. Carol Shakeshaft of Hofstra U., a child is ONE HUNDRED TIMES more likely to be molested in a public school than by a priest or pastor. One hundred times, folks.

But still we must follow the media reporting rules for pedophiles:
1.) Priest? “Automatically guilty! And EVIL!”

3.) Satanist? “Never happened! Satanic panic! False memory syndrome!”

“Guest’s” ostensible point is that the statistic is meaningless because there are 100 times as many teachers as priests. Of course, that demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of statistics. The study demonstrates that the likelihood of abuse correcting for disparities in the numbers of categories, i.e. priest v. teacher is horrifically greater at the hands of a teacher. Guest’s smug, snarky comment mere evinces his/her own ignorance.

I went ahead and read the linked article, and it has a chart which states that girls are more frequently the victims (See Table 1: of 6.7% who report contact sexual abuse, 7.6% of females and 6.2% of males reported such abuse), in column 3 on page 2 it states that 96% of the abusers were male, and only 4% female. Since it doesn’t break down heterosexual vs homosexual abuse, we don’t have the exact percentages, but the numbers are such that a very substantial percentage of the abuse is homosexual in nature, male offenders targeting male victims.

Some people would have us believe that this is simply a statistical anomaly, the result of opportunistic selection, but the vast majority of public schools are coeducational, and there are just as many girls available as boys. Clearly, there is sex selection occurring as well.

Far be it from me to suggest that gay pedophiles are more common or more dangerous than heterosexual pedophiles.

Looking at your list of offenders, I see one that is not like the others:
Emily Nesbit, 31, was charged with institutional sex assault, a third-degree felony, on Friday. Police said Nesbit admitted meeting an 18-year-old male student for sex in a classroom after hours at Cumberland Valley High School in Mechanicsburg.

By your formulation, you are placing a 31 yo women who had sex with an 18 yo man in a list of so called pedophiles. Since when is it pedophilia when 2 adults have sex? Yes, the state of Pennsylvania has made it a crime for teachers to have sex with their students, even if the student has reached adulthood. If you want to criticize the teacher for not being able to control herself and stay away from her students, even having sex with one on school grounds, fair enough.

But, what Pennsylvania has not done it to change the meaning of the word pedophilia. What the woman did is not pedophilia, not in any definition of the word. Actually, you are using that word incorrectly with everyone on your list, with the exception of the gay pedophile in your headline. Pedophilia is defined as (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/pedophilia):
Sexual or erotic feelings or desires directed by adults and late adolescents towards children; particularly, in psychiatry, a paraphilia consisting of a primary adult sexual attraction to prepubescent children.

Your headliner is a 40 yo man who had sex with a boy under 12. So, pedophile.

But, looking at the others on your list, we have:
    31 yo woman x 18 yo man
22 yo woman x 15 yo male teen
25 yo woman x 15 yo male teen
    48 yo man x 13 & 15 yo female teens

None of those teens are prepubescent children, therefore none of their alleged abusers are pedophiles. That is not to say that none of the behavior is criminal, or that it shouldn’t be criminal (especially the 48 yo man and the 13 yo girl). But, it is not pedophilia.

The guest is attempting to imply that, there being 100 times more teachers than priests, a 100 times greater risk actually demonstrates that individual teachers and priests are equally likely to offend.

Unfortunately for his logic, it falls apart under not even very close examination. 100% of Catholic priests are male, which means that 100% of the abusers are male. First, the 7 million teachers figure is bogus: there were 3.7 million full-time-equivalent teachers the fall of 2011, and 76% of them were female. That leaves only 900,000 males, but, as linked in another comment, 96% of the abusers were male.

The 70,000 priests figure is also bogus; there were 41,406 diocesan and religious-order Catholic priests in the United States, which means that there are about 4.6 priests per 100 male teachers, or only 22 male teachers per priest; the ratio is not 100 to 1.

These numbers were looked up pretty easily; Google is my friend.

  27. Dana
    March 19th, 2014 @ 1:32 pm

I’m actually going to agree with this comment, because we too often lump all of the sexual offenders under the term “pedophile.” A pedophils is someone sexually attracted to prepubescent children, while a hebephile prefers children from (roughly) 11 to 14, kids in puberty and an ephebophile is interested in young people 15 to 17. Pedophile has the worst connotation, in significant part because so few people know the other words, but these are all different chronophilias and, at least on a educated discussion site like this one, we ought to be more accurate.

The lack of specificity has enabled a couple of commenters to point to studies which claim that pedophiles don’t particularly care whether their victims are male of female, and that the disparate numbers have nothing to do with homosexuality. But once you start to restrict the conversation to hebephiles and ephebophiles, predators looking for victims either in or just out of puberty, you see a very significant tendency toward the sexual selection of males as victims by male predators. Their attractions are not just for age, but also for sex, and are far more heavily homosexual than the percentage of homosexuals among the population!

  28. Dana
    March 19th, 2014 @ 1:34 pm

And, had the victim been female, the parents would never have allowed the sleepover, or would anything but problems have been seen from showering together.

  29. Anamika
    March 19th, 2014 @ 1:59 pm

Clearly, there is sex selection occurring as well.

The same chart you mention also shows that only 5.5 % of white children report contact sex, while Black and Latino kids report 9
%. That’s a huge mismatch given the percentages.

By your logic, clearly, there is a race selection occurring as well. So, the pedophiles are not just predominantly homosexual they must be mostly black/latino (or else Whites who prefer darker skin for some reason.)

Still, it is an abuse of authority, and calls us to cast the ex-teacher’s good judgement in o doubt.

  31. Dana
    March 19th, 2014 @ 2:20 pm

Actually, there could be race selection going on; I don’t think that the statistics rule that out in the slightest. However, you can’t say that with certainty, because you are talking about percentages of students, and the percentage of black, Hispanic and Asian students is smaller than that of white students, and the percentage of black, Hispanic and Asian teachers and other school officials who are part of the statistics of offenders is also smaller. The disparities just aren’t as glaringly obvious as they are for the percentage of same-sex offenses.

  32. RS
    March 19th, 2014 @ 2:20 pm

It may have to do with the prevalence of dysfunctional families within those demographic groups which leave a greater number of children available to be preyed upon.

  33. Anamika
    March 19th, 2014 @ 2:21 pm

First, the 7 million teachers figure is bogus: there were 3.7 million full-time-equivalent teachers the fall of 2011,

As per Table 2 of Skaeshaft report, fulltime teachers constitute only 18% of public school abusers.

  34. Dana
    March 19th, 2014 @ 2:22 pm

It’s also true that the percentages of black and Hispanic students are far greater in urban schools than in general, and there could well be some disparities in urban vis a vis rural or suburban settings.

  35. Dana

This( link below) has more detail on the data set used by Shakeshaft, the race question is only a minor difference. “Students of color account for 44 percent of the targets but 33.2 percent of the sample.”

Regarding estimated male/female offenders the ratio varies from 96/4 to 57/43

    http://www.ethicsinstitute.com/public_school_systems.html

    On same sex offenses:

“Same-sex misconduct ranges from 18 to 28 percent of the reported cases, depending upon the study.

“Same-sex sex is not the same as sexual identity. For instance, in Shakeshaft and Cohan (1994), of the 24 percent of males who targeted other males, all of the offenders described themselves as heterosexual, with most living in married or heterosexual relationships.”

“Researchers have failed to find a consistent connection between sexual identification or sexual orientation label and child sexual abuse.”

  39. Dana
    March 19th, 2014 @ 2:47 pm

    Anamika quoted:

Same-sex sex is not the same as sexual identity. For instance, in
Shakeshaft and Cohan (1994), of the 24 percent of males who targeted other males, all of the offenders described themselves as heterosexual, with most living in married or heterosexual relationships.

And this is what I believe to be pure bovine feces. Someone who is heterosexual does not engage in sex with people of the same sex; that’s so obvious and common sense that it cannot be ignored. When a sex offender who has raped a minor of the same sex tells you that he is heterosexual, he is lying to you!

Jerry Sandusky was exactly that: married to a woman, for many, many years . . . but he was raping pubescent boys, apparently for decades. You might be able to call him bisexual, but not heterosexual.
