‘Mattress Girl’ Emma Sulkowicz Releases Crappy Porn Video With French Title

Posted on | June 5, 2015 | 145 Comments

Ceci N’est Pas Un Viol” is French for “This Is Not a Rape” and if recent Columbia University graduate Emma Sulkowicz intended this eight-minute video as “art,” it’s very bad art. Sulkowicz claimed she was raped by fellow student Paul Nungesser, who was cleared of wrongdoing in subsequent investigations by the university and by New York City police. Sulkowicz then made herself famous by carrying a mattress around campus as a senior art project to publicize her (disproven) accusation; in April, Nungesser filed a lawsuit against Columbia (see “Emma Sulkowicz Is a Vindictive, Dishonest and Crazy Slut — Allegedly”).

Natasha Vargas-Cooper at the feminist blog Jezebel writes:

Artnet has confirmed that Emma Sulkowicz . . . is behind the website “Ceci N’est Pas Un Viol.” The site hosts an artist’s statement from Sulkowicz, who graduated from Columbia in May of this year, and a video she filmed with director Ted Lawson several months ago over the university’s winter break.
The eight-minute video features Sulkowicz and a man, his face blurred, engaging in what appears to be consensual sex that turns violent. The unidentified man open-palm slaps Sulkowicz, chokes her, removes the condom, then continues to have very rough sex with Sulkowicz, who whimpers and protests from pain.

Is that actually Emma in the video? I didn’t watch it myself, so I can’t say whether the unattractive blue-haired woman in the video is her or not. Either way, the site at which she posted the video is full of craziness:

Trigger Warning: The following text contains allusions to rape. Everything that takes place in the following video is consensual but may resemble rape. It is not a reenactment but may seem like one. If at any point you are triggered or upset, please proceed with caution and/or exit this website. However, I do not mean to be prescriptive, for many people find pleasure in feeling upset.
Ceci N’est Pas Un Viol is not about one night in August, 2012. It’s about your decisions, starting now. It’s only a reenactment if you disregard my words. It’s about you, not him.
Do not watch this video if your motives would upset me, my desires are unclear to you, or my nuances are indecipherable.
You might be wondering why I’ve made myself this vulnerable. Look—I want to change the world, and that begins with you, seeing yourself. If you watch this video without my consent, then I hope you reflect on your reasons for objectifying me and participating in my rape, for, in that case, you were the one who couldn’t resist the urge to make Ceci N’est Pas Un Viol about what you wanted to make it about: rape.
Please, don’t participate in my rape. Watch kindly.

As if this wasn’t crazy enough, Sulkowicz then appends “a few questions to help you reflect,” which include these:

  • How well do you think you know me? Have we ever met?
  • Do you think I’m the perfect victim or the world’s worst victim?
  • Do you refuse to see me as either a human being or a victim? If so, why? Is it to deny me agency and thus further victimize me? If so, what do you think of the fact that you owe your ability to do so to me, since I’m the one who took a risk and made myself vulnerable in the first place?
  • Do you hate me? If so, how does it feel to hate me?

Comments at the site range from crude to hilarious. This is not an art project. This is what we call “a cry for help.” Feminism often functions as a substitute for therapy, but not an effective substitute. Crazy women who become involved with feminism just keep getting crazier.

Oh golly… I was about of a third of the way through when I realized the story was taking place in Canada.

Really? Your dramatic tale of smashing oppression is set in…Canada? At least it’s encouraging evidence that the US has no monopoly on self dramatizing special snowflakes. Good training, though – if you can stand up to the brutal repression in Canada then you have nothing to fear if ISIS or al Qaida or Boko Haram come calling.

  • Steve Skubinna

Probably going for the laconic Jeff Foxworthy “You might be a redneck if…” angle.

  • Steve Skubinna

She can use that as an endorsement: “Too nuts even for Jezebel!”

  • Steve Skubinna

What is this saner world of which you speak? Is it like this one but with fewer raving nutters? What do people such as you and I do for entertainment there (he asked innocently, hoping that he could be included in this “saner world”)?

Reminds me of the old line from Hitchhiker’s Guide (the original radio program) to the effect:

“There is a theory that if anyone ever discovers what the universe is for, it will instantly vanish and be replaced by something even more inexplicable. There is another theory that this has already happened.”

  • Steve Skubinna

(ba doink ba doink twang doink doink doink…) RING!

“Oh, who can that be? Oh look, it’s the high school cheer leading team selling chocolate cakes with whipped cream! Come on in, girls!”

  • Steve Skubinna

Me, I go for the JC Whitney catalog. Now that, my friend, is the epitome of lust!

BTW, if you register to comment you have access to an edit button.

I think she’s counting on it.

I think Mark Twain once described somebody as a “cultural Robin Hood, stealing from the witty and giving to the dull.”

  • Daniel Freeman

Sorry, thought you would get the British Commonwealth aspect from “centre.” And it only makes the point more starkly, that some people seek outrage to feel better in some perverse way, even in so mollycoddled a place as a Canadian university.

  • Daniel Freeman

At last! A description of the internet.

  • Prime Director

    I’m with Ace; I don’t get “why.”

She undermines the coherence of her message by invoking Magritte in this way.

[TTOI] is not [a pipe]; [TTOI] is a depiction of [a pipe].

    so by way of analogy

[Her art film] is not [a rape]; [her art film] is [a depiction of a rape]

Does she mean the depiction of rape in her film is simply a reenactment? Is she calling it rape regardless of the consensual nature of the encounter because PIV is always rape? The allusion to TTOI does not makes her message any less opaque. I don’t know what she’s saying.

What I DO know, is that guy is stucking fupid.

  • Daniel Freeman

You’re over-thinking it. She’s not the smart. The dates on the cameras were set to the date of the alleged rape. It is simply a reenactment.

Something like my reading of Cindy Sheehan, when she was on top of the world. This is an ugly thing to say of a mother, but it struck me that the best thing that ever happened to Cindy was the death of her son. It made her somebody, gave her a legitimacy she never had before, so that Maureen Dowd, from whose barren loins no life ever sprang, bestowed absolute moral authority upon her. She got a photo spread in Vanity Fair.

Another thing it did was give her her son back. The son that not only left the nest but betrayed her – twice – by enlisting. The son that was no longer a willful child but a pliable symbol of her own ideology. The son that she had threatened to run over with her car when he wanted to enlist was now fully hers again, never to leave.

Sick? Oh yeah, absolutely, in a Norman Bates’ mother in the attic sort of way. Here, whatever happened to Emma Sulkowitz appears to be nothing more than getting dropped by a young man who was not as invested in their relationship as she was. So she has enacted revenge, and at the same time defined herself. Plus, extra bonus – Art! Look, she’s doing Art! She has a university degree that validates her as an Artist! From now on, everything she does is by definition Art!

So don’t you dare express doubt about Her Rape. It is the towering artistic achievement of her life.

  • Steve Skubinna

We can also speculate that she has abandoned any hope of gaining conventional employment.

How would you like to be the HR person doing a web search on new applicant Emma Sulkowitz?

  • Daniel Freeman

I think that ship sailed on a mattress-shaped hull.

  • Steve Skubinna

    I skipped right over centre.

Back when I was at UCSD, an acquaintance spent a summer in England. ‘e caim back wiff an accent roight outta Monty Python, ‘e did! Strewth!. Loik e’ fought ‘e was bleedin’ Madonna, innit?

So I generally dismiss Anglicisms from college students as affectation.

  • Steve Skubinna

Hmmmm. I wonder, is “wench” still a job title in port towns?

  • Steve Skubinna

    My work here is done.

  • Fail Burton

How about Margaret and Mead at Tanagra?

  • Jeanette Victoria

It’s true I like The Patriarchy.

  • Steve Skubinna

Gotta say The Patriarchy has been good to me.

  • Jeanette Victoria

It has been good to me as well

  • Fail Burton

Not as long as there’s trees and clouds to stare at.

  • The original Mr. X

Psych-iatrist comes from the Greek iatres, meaning doctor. So a psychiatrist is the one who can prescribe drugs.

  • Steve Skubinna

Happy little trees and happy little clouds?

  • Steve Skubinna

The way I do it is linguistically break down psychologist into “studies the psyche.” So he doesn’t prescribe drugs.

Though I suppose there are times when one is tempted to do drugs.
