Update: I am rightfully taken to task by the Wondering Jew, in the comments, for my non-command of spelling in the title. I blame too much blood in my margarita system.
This blog is witnessing some extremely un-mellow comments, as witnessed on the Insulted Again thread. The Wondering Jew offered this completely unacceptable observation:
If you listen to Jimmy’s early albums you will also see some of the best singer-songwriting out there. He was a really talented chronicler of a certain Southern-fried, beach oriented, hard-living, anti-authority lifestyle. But later on Jimmy got too in love with being cute and if you ever listen to one of his newer albums or go to a Buffett show today, it’s all about Margaritaville Tequila and drunk fratboys.
Wrap your ears around around this Katrina memorial, and sin no more, you:
Now you sunny beaches know how I feel.
Hey, I just wanted to get that Stacy=Jimmy Buffett meme out there to a wider audience in the blogosphere. 🙂
For the record, I love Buffett– and getting to hang out with him was a big thrill for me. The Katrina song shows he is still perfectly capable of writing very good stuff when it suits him.
The problem is that he let his stardom go to his head and he got too cute and he got away from his audience. For the most part, his newer stuff can’t hold a candle to the older work.
David Allan Coe captured this well in his song

I don’t care about Jimmy Buffet. I don’t care about his older work, his newer work, or anything he does. When I was a younger man, and took life less seriously, and thought Leftists were just a minor nuisance, I enjoyed listening to Buffet. Then I grew up and discovered that the Left was a threat to our nation, and that that Buffet jerk (not Warren) donates about a zillion dollars to Leftist causes and electing Leftist candidates, and raises several zillion more through benefit concerts. He helps elect the people destroying our country. I know a lot of conservatives tend to give a pass to people with reprehensible politics because they like that person’s music. Maybe this is because not listening to Leftist musicians leaves one with very few remaining choices. Maybe they think that “talent” makes up for being evil. Maybe they don’t want conservatives to be seen as stodgy and uptight. Maybe they don’t want people to think that they take everything too seriously. Maybe they are not willing to make the sacrifice of giving up music they enjoy for their principles. Maybe it’s something else. I don’t know. I do know that if you buy Buffet’s CD, if you (legally) download his songs, if you go to his concerts – you might as well donate the money directly to Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi, or maybe Charles Johnson’s tip jar. Personally, I’m willing to sacrifice listening to some 20-year-old pop-culture stoner music in order not to have that on my conscience.

Thirty years from now, when you’re sitting around your home theater system with your grandson on your knee and he asks you, “What did you do in the great Buffet Blasphemy,” you won’t have to say, “Well… I drank Mojitos in Louisiana.”

When money is the only mouthpiece that gets heard, it pays to stop ‘conversing’ with those who would spend it on principles you wouldn’t support.

I love Jimmy. Always have. But to be honest with you, Margaritaville has some pretty offensive lyrics for those living in the Gulf Coast area.
“All of those tourists covered in oil” is either extremely prophetic or highly offensive.
I am not sure which. Perhaps I shall ponder the question a while. Anybody seen my salt shaker?

My 2 favorite singers of all time are David Allan Coe and Jimmy, in that order.
And I think that they are 2 of the best songwriters of the last 4 decades.
They actually got into a dispute over the rights to “Diver Do It Deeper” around 30 years ago and Jimmy, after getting quite miffed about Coe’s recording it first, said that he wouldn’t sue Coe because Coe didn’t have any money. Jimmy was right.
Jimmy also got into a dispute with the heirs of the late Lord Richard Buckley, the author of God’s Own Drunk, over the crass manner in which Jimmy performed the song (apparently profanity impugned the integrity of this otherwise profound and serious work).
The heirs of the Buckley estate, through their lawyer, were either suing Jimmy or threatening to sue him.
At his concerts during this period, Jimmy gave out the name and telephone number of the lawyer before he sang the song. Why couldn’t I think of something that brilliant?
Jimmy is best known, outside of Parrothead circles, for Cheeseburger in Paradise and Margaritaville, but he has many, many (easily more than 100) beautiful songs that he has written, some of them on the cute side and others simply poetic and artistic or heart-wrenching (like False Echoes, Havana 1921, which is about his father’s onset of Alzheimer’s disease).
I have been to Key West around 40 times, mostly because it was the home of 2 of my favorite artists (Jimmy and Ernest Hemingway), and I can see what drew Jimmy to it.
But, Jimmy’s politics are deplorable and I simply dismiss his political views as misguided, as I do with so many of the other artists from my childhood and adolescent years (e.g. Neil Young, the Grateful Dead, etc.).
It also saddens me that Jimmy is a strident atheist, because he is truly missing the boat.
I hope that he will find God one day.

Speaking of blasphemy BTW, spelling “Buffett” with one “t” in the headline of your blog post is high on the list.
And as for the notion of not consuming art of those whose politics you disagree, the notion of art in the service of politics is a thoroughly Marxist-Leninist one. But if it makes you feel bad that a few cents of the few $ Jimmy makes on selling an album might go into a liberal pocket, I’m sure Stacy wouldn’t mind if you hit the tip jar in penance for any money you sent Jimmy’s way.

gg:”Among other confused wingnut lunacy, Erich Madden blabbers,Maybe they are not willing to make the sacrifice of giving up music they enjoy for their principles.
Not for nothing people like you have been called the American Taliban.”
gg – Seems like, given your penchant for extremist commentary, you would fit in far more well among the Taliban than I. I’m not exactly sure how refusing to give my money to those who undermine my values and country somehow lumps me in with those who behead children, stone women to death, and so forth, but I suppose there must be some connection in your twisted little mind that I can’t fathom. Perhaps you should go visit the Taliban and try to have a peaceful discussion of religion or politics with them – see if they can explain the difference to you between us.

Nowhere did I say “ban all music”, nor even “boycott ALL music”, rather, if you will read what I said, it is that we, who hold conservative principles, should choose not to spend our money with musicians who we find morally contemptible. There are plenty of redneck Country Music artists I can still spend my money with.
It is funny that a Liberal would criticize me for urging a boycott of products (music) when we disagree with the manufacturer’s (artist’s) politics, because Liberals never do that sort of thing, right? Planning to take your next vacation in Arizona? Hypocrisy much?

With regard to the connection that you draw that the Taliban hate heavy metal/rock music therefore I must be like the Taliban – I *like* heavy metal and rock music. Unlike the Taliban, who object to the music, I never said I didn’t like the music, I don’t like the artists. I am willing to do without music that I would enjoy listening to, rather than help bad people do more evil. Besides, I can listen to it on the radio for free anyway.
As far as liking to (ir)rationalwiki.org, do you have any other Bigot web sites you want to link to? Do you have any kkk.org references to use against me?

Of course I was kidding about the “covered in oil”.
But there was this time in 1976, in Lakeland, Fl. where, as a young sailor, a bottle of Tequila and a bottle of coconut oil came together in a most unforgettable indoors weekend.
Unfortunately, I forget the details. And my wife is glad.

I’m back, and yet, somehow, I’ve lost interest. After a long day of beheading and stoning infidels, I’m too tired to argue. It really takes a lot out of you – being a Taliban is hard work. Maybe I’ll listen to some Buffett to relax.

Check out the TTI Urban Mobility Report 2009. It is proof that we need a multimodal system of infrastructure. Hoorway!

We need a foreign aid system that reduces theft.

We need to secure our border and change our approach to the war on drugs. We need to focus more on the demand side of the equation.
