Who Said It? July 14: ‘I No Longer See a Path to Victory for Herman Cain’

“Herman Cain has bottomed out, but still can’t find momentum to get in the air again. …
“If Cain cannot do well in Iowa, he is finished. And with six months to go, Iowa caucus goers are referring to him as a ‘supernova;’ i.e. a great flash of brightness soon to go dark. There are only around 125,000 caucus goers in Iowa. And many of those who were going to go with Cain are now going to Bachmann or waiting for someone else. He’s losing staff in Iowa and New Hampshire.
“I no longer see a path to victory for Herman Cain.”

I’d never seen that quote before, but it’s featured in today’s “Day by Day” cartoon:

Click the picture to see the whole strip. Just in case you were wondering what I was up to at that time: On July 17, I covered a Herman Cain fundraising event in Bethesda, Maryland — and drank Flying Dog ale with Cain’s campaign manager, Mark Block:

  1. But what would happen to Smitty and Wombat?

Maybe we’d all sell out. But the price would have to be right. And the price ain’t going down IYKWIMAITYD.

  2. One thing that is helping Cain is the fact that nobody wants the nomination- Palin Passed On It, Christie Passed On It, Huckabee Passed On It, Ryan Passed On It, Daniels Passed On It, Pence Passed On It, Barbour Passed On It,  Thune Passed On It, Trump Passed On It, and Rudy Giuliani Passed On It. It is the nomination that nobody really wants.

  3. Yeah, Erick Erickson has changed his tune now in his ‘horserace’ update; now he says ‘Cain has found his path to victory’.

  5. I submit a video you have to watch. It is Sarah Palin’s speech on Friday night. This is what I consider to be one of, if not the best, speech that Sarah Palin has ever given…  especially after her saying no to running for the Presidency.

Question… after you watch it, do you really think any of the
Republican candidates could or would be able to make a similar speech? That is why she is not running. She has a more important mission….  to attack the entire corrupt system and to promote her Conservative principles.

  6. Stacy, The 9% National Sales Tax is terrible and Obama will use it to crush Cain, please tell him to scrap it. I want Obama out office and the 9% National Tax would make Cain unelectable if he got the nomination.

  7. Great Caesar’s Ghost, man!  TWO cases per post, of any decent ale, just let me know where you want the posts.  And what you want them to say.

Remember, I’m the one who put the “glib” in “glibbest.”  Have Rapier Wit, Will Travel.

Samuel Smith’s Old Brewery Pale Ale flows pleasantly, don’t you think?

  8. I’m so sick of conservatives bloggers not having the fortitude to stand up to Erick Erickson.  He’s a douchebag that has worthless political skills.  Why don’t more bloggers call out this conartist?

  9. PhilipJames, Thank You. It is tragic that she is not running. She was the only one that could beat Obama and the idiot republican party is too stupid to realize that and now we are stuck with absolute s-h-i-t.

  10. I gave Redstate a couple of clicks back in the day and quickly deduced it was full of shallow thinking. My time is valuable and I have an instinct for separating the wheat from the chaff. If I’m going to waste time on the internet I’ll waste it here where where the commentary is both blunt and erudite.

  11. I like the concept of Redstate, but its execution….particularly in regards to the whole Rick Perry thing…was awful and counter to the Conservative movement.

I was shocked when I got the  boot from Redstate for posting some facts about Rick Perry’s tenure in Texas (as a Texan…I take issue with the meme that Rick Perry is much of a Conservative).  Of course I did a bit of research, and learned not to take much offense since some of the main bloggers there are certified slime balls.

It was deliciously rewarding to see them to have to walk back all of their Rick Perry love and begin to discuss the the facts of his tenure in Texas.

Also, Erickson’t reaction to the Perry meltdown has been hilarious. After condemning the campaign of a man (Herman Cain) who had been very helpful in getting him into the spotlight via radio, he has had to reluctantly admit that Cain has a good shot at the presidency.

  12. I don’t like Herman Cain and I sure hope he is not the nominee and put him on the same level as Ron Paul as candidates that I would never vote for. I wish people would wise up about Cain. He will get vetted if he becomes a threat. Right now he has value to keeping Perry or some other conservative from overtaking Romney that is why he has value to the corrupt pieces of crap that are killing the republican party. That is the truth. It is tragic that Palin decided not to run. I wish that she would reconsider.

  13. I’ve not seen that at all.  In fact, I’ve at times posted rather harsh criticism of the positions of Erick and several of the movers and shakers over there, without so much as a warning.  But those were all based on facts and actions no one denied.

OTOH, I see people all the time being threatened with banning over there, and probably being banned (I don’t think they issue public statements over it) for being critical in an unconstructive manner.  Don’t get all flamy with the  principals or oldtimers, there are multiple people with the power to strike you down.

The atmosphere over there is not at all friendly to Romney, who gets the same abuse he gets here and at most conservative sites since he isn’t conservative enough to suit conservatives – which, along with good hair, he has in common with Ronald Reagan.

Perry did become the Flavor of the Month at RedState, and they were proud of securing his announcement at their convention in Charleston, SC, but how is that different from his initial reception at most conservative sites?  He was billed as the Great Conservative Hero riding to rescue conservative principles from the too-well-washed moderates and the unwashed Paulbots.  He wasn’t all that.  That much wasn’t RedState’s fault.

  14. I’ll say it again. Cain is being promoted by the MSM in order to tear him down later. There are policy positions he wavers like the wind on. He will not rescue this nation because his monetary policy views are akin to Obama’s. Coming soon.

  15. Whaaaa? They sure do have a funny way of “promoting” Herman Cain if that’s what they’re up to. I’ve never seen such dishonorable and scurrilous ambush interviews in my life.

  16. What is “coming soon”? The MSM beginning to tear down Cain, or you providing support for your sweeping statementson Cain?

If it’s the latter, I ask: Why the wait? Please explain how/why Cain is X, Y, or Z. I can understand if you’re in the process of researching and writing posts for your blog.

Otherwise, what’s the deal with the anti-Cain folks making sweeping statements about him, but then saying, “just wait a few weeks or months and I lay out the goods on him . . .”?

  17. The MSM is not yet “promoting” Cain to the extent that they have promoted Palin, but give them time.

As Cain becomes more “newsworthy,” the MSM media will have no choice but to promote their versions of the Cain story. And, as Cain’s odds of becoming the GOP nominee continue to increase, the MSM will need to help readers/viewers “vet” him, because that’s their jobs.

In other words, the MSM will be providing a valuable public service by once again proving the absurdity of the old line, “there is no such thing as bad publicity.” Thanks, MSM.

  18. So do I, but if she did, you know what she would have to contend with. On top of everything else she catches hell for, she would be catching hell then for not being able to make up her mind what she wants to do, “how can anybody support her now, what if she changes her mind again?”, etc.

  19. My don’t you look all spiffy and stuff. ‘Cept for the loose tie. Never  could wear ’em myself. Remind me too much of hanging.

Anyway, I knew there was a reason why I hang out here and not Red State. It’s not the bon mots or the sly jabs, it’s the incisive analysis and savvy intuition. Plus I like to see old fashioned journalism in practice.

  20. Beto, here is my thing: I am willing to let the campaign play out, and am not so arrogant as to think I can foresee the future. “Day by Day” says I “predicted” Cain’s emergence as “top-tier,” but I don’t remember making that prediction, and I sure didn’t expect it to occur the way it did.

After the Orlando debate, other people — including Bret Baier, Ed Morrissey and Michelle Malkin — were actually more impressed with Cain’s performance than I was. Perhaps that was because I was already so familiar with Cain, and because I was focused on Perry’s meltdown.  Cain’s crushing victory in the Florida Straw Poll shocked me as much  as it shocked anyone. It was the kind of thing no one could predict.

I’m willing to wait and let things happen, rather than to anticipate “what if”scenarios based purely on fear. Will the MSM turn on Cain if he emerges as the likely GOP nominee? Almost certainly. Will media hostility suffice to “tear down” Cain? I don’t know. But we will have to wait and see, rather than base our opinions on an anticipation of what we think might happen.
