Are Americans Homophobic Because They Won’t Bother To Buy This Noise?

Posted on | June 1, 2012 | 41 Comments

by Smitty

I suppose the newly gay Green Lantern might sell in ‘Frisco, New York, and Addams-Morgan. But how many heterosexual parents with hopes of grandchildren are actually going to expose children to this dead end?

My guess is: not enough to keep the story going, irrespective of the rest of its artistic merit. Fact is, I can’t muster much more than a Sunday installment of Day by Day. I bought a copy of The Watchmen, which is great, and made it about a third of the way through.

The new Green Lantern will join all of those “strainin’ hard, tryin’ to mainstream homosexuality” sitcoms on the scrapheap.

Update: “Americans Have No Idea How Few Gay People There Are.” Must be their low replacement rate.

If they want a “Gay” superhero, why don’t they invent their own…Big Ass Super Sucker comes to mind.

    Lavender Lantern would work better.

Oh well, DC has now jumped the shark as far as I’m concerned. Such a shame.

Watchmen was great.  The only two major characters in the whole damn book with any sense were the guy that started out (like Jacob Marley) dead to begin with, and that crazy, right-wing nutjob, Rorschach.

Then again, I always root for the pre-visitation Scrooge in A Christmas Carol.

Quartermaster, Marvel beat them to it in the 90s, when the Thor in their animated Avengers series was a card-carrying member of Greenpeace and was into Whale Wars….

This is the god whose idea of an appropriate guest gift when visiting the Giants was a couple of dead whales he just happened to catch on the trip….

Hal had a girlfriend.  The gay one is the Golden Age GL from the ’40s – who wore a mostly yellow costume and was powerless over wood instead.

Hmmm, now that I think about it, it makes sense.

A couple of decades ago, the comic books featured a gay Canadian superhero.

    This ground’s already been plowed.

Maybe they’ll practice safe storytelling this time.

Marvel has so many gay supercharacters at this point you can’t throw a shield without hitting one. This is DC being 30 years behind the times.

Both major comics companies are based in NYC; you can’t blame them for thinking gays are a big demographic for comics.

And Smitty, most comics aren’t written for kids nowadays, but for aging farts who grew up on comics.  There are a few kid-level-dedicated books left, but the big reason most comics are still in existence is to preserve trademark and tie-in revenue.

I find the obsession people have with this stuff tiring. As long as you don’t give me trouble, I’m not going to invade your life.

Utterly disgusting.  But then, major comics seem to be especially far left these days.  The Gramscian ruination of our culture continues.

So was Alan Scott born that way, or did he discover his weakness for wood after gaining his superpowers?

  24. ThePaganTemple
    June 1st, 2012 @ 10:39 pm

Problem is, Alan Scott had two children, Jade and Obsidian. So Hal having a girlfriend doesn’t make much difference.

That would be Northstar, who’s supposed to be getting married to his boyfriend in an upcoming issue of, I think, X-Men. Gay people must be cool. Would they say so in the comic books if they weren’t?

Both Marvel and DC are merely trying to appeal to a large segment of their readers, otherwise known as the majority.

You can’t be serious about parents not wanting their kids to read about gays because they think it might turn them gay?

As far back as I remember, I knew I liked women, even before I knew what you were supposed to do with them.  I can’t imagine that it’s any different with gay kids.

  30. Peter Ingemi

In terms of sales as a guy who once owned a comic store the idea is to give people a reason to buy comic with Allen Scott a very minor character these days, that would otherwise not sell.

There is not a vast comic book customer base for a “gay” character.  The single guys who are the vast majority of comic collectors aren’t without a women by choice…

…but if you make a comic a “gay icon” there will be a large chunk of the gay community that will buy the comic simply becauce it is the IN thing to do.

Lets face it how many people bought THE SATANIC VERSES or DREAMS OF MY FATHER without ever cracking the cover.

If this comic sells an extra 200k copies because the Gay community and their friends consider it the IN thing to do then DC will have succeeded.

If they make the mistake of mistaking those sales for people actually liking the comic (no matter how good or bad the story or art) and invest in a full line of such comics that will be their undoing.

I think it’s more a case of “why does everything have to be gay?”.  TV shows, movies, now comic book characters, you name it — gay has to be inserted into it *pardon the pun.

I can only speak for myself, but I’m suffering from a bit of gay overload.  Ironically,  a gay and lesbian from my husband’s workplace were complaining of the same thing at a company get together (the lesbian had gotten something from her phone service concerning gay friendliness which she found a bit much), so there’s that.

See Stogie Chomper’s comment below. It’s all part of an effort by a very vocal minority to make what was (not so long ago) immoral and criminal into something accepted and even encouraged by mainstream culture.

”  I can’t imagine that it’s any different with gay kids.”
So you admit you have no imagination when it comes to deviance and perversion? Why exactly WOULD a normal person understand the mind of a homosexual?

  36. Quartermaster
    June 2nd, 2012 @ 2:26 pm

I didn’t pay much attention to Marvel. DC was my line as a kid. I didn’t much care for Marvel’s brand of kitsch, although I had good friends that did.

I did like “Groo” back in the 80s. Sergio Leones produced a pretty good parody of the Ninja stuff in that series. It was the only place other than “Mad” where he was published (that I know of). I liked his Mad Mag stuff too.I can understand the ecofreak kinda thing, but the depravity of Green Lantern and Superman coming out as ghey is a lot different. Homosexuality quite sterile and that is one reason God found it to be an abomination.

  37. Quartermaster
    June 2nd, 2012 @ 2:38 pm

The reason we see this type of depravity growing by leaps and bounds is quite simple. Paul dealt with it back in the 1st century AD,

“Rom 1:18-32  For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened.   Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things. Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves, who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,   undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them. ”

It’s certainly nothing new. But it’s just as destructive as it’s always been.

  38. Pathfinder's wife
    June 2nd, 2012 @ 4:23 pm

Hence why I brought up Ulrichs and Hirschfeld (but admittedly I should have said precedent) and what came after them: Roehm.  There are historic parallels to putting the gay into everything, and the willful blindness in believing that every homosexual is like that nice, unassuming gay guy or lesbian one knows that wouldn’t bother anyone (which of course do exist, but not everyone is nice — some people are quite nasty in fact).

So, this stuff is nothing new, usually ends quite badly, and homosexuals usually wind up getting turned into victims as well (I think the term “useful idiots” may perhaps be applicable eventually, but by then it will of course be too late for any of us — c’est la vie).

**I’m not going to go all biblical though, as truly I don’t have a dog in this fight other than the potential threats to the  1st Amendment and the willful ignorance of wanting to be nice and thus believe in nice as opposed to the truth which allows for some pretty nasty shat.

I’m quite immune.  I’m more worried about it being crammed or jammed with regards to people much younger and more naive than myself.

I’m merely annoyed; they could be indoctrinated — and no matter what society is muzzled with cries of “hater!” and “bigotry!”, thus the “victims” always victimize.
