Can We Just Have the Air Force Drop Cable TV News Anchors on Syria?

At this moment, John Kerry is on TV demanding that the United States must now involve itself in the Syrian civil war.

No sane person is in favor of this.

John McCain is in favor of this.

I rest my case.

Having made up my mind weeks ago that U.S. involvement in Syria is bad policy, I’m bored to tears by this “debate,” knowing that when this noise is over, Congress will vote against involvement.

Or maybe they’ve all gone crazy.

Cable TV news networks won’t shut up about it, so I’m obligated to blog about Syria, but no one can force me to take it seriously.

  1. Taranto makes a pro-intervention case today. I’m not convinced, but I’m sympathetic to the idea of responding to the use of chemical weapons.

  2. The argument for intervention only makes sense if you trust the judgment of Barack Obama.

Ergo, it does not make sense.

Trust me on this: If we intervene, we’ll regret it.

  3. I think McCain’s demanding the full “boots on the ground” treatment, but that’s his default position on these things anyway.

  4. Congress will vote to reach across the aisle and drop a few JDAMs on Damascus, when the US people want them dropped on the Capitol building and K Street.

  5. I agree with you, and I certainly don’t trust anything he touches. But I think that if we’re going to intervene, it should be the full monty, and there’s no way to justify that.

I also figure that worrying so much about the people killed by the chemical weapons is like bemoaning the people killed by nukes in WWII but ignoring the fire bombing campaigns. The novelty of the means is less important than the magnitude and purpose of the effects (and context matters, of course).

Assad’s chemical attack is a rounding error of an atrocity in his family legacy.

  6. This makes me wonder what the new “Journolist” is now called and if Erza Klein is still calling the shots. With all the major MSM and partners talking about this, it smells very manufactured.

This entire affair with Syria is a bit too convenient for Mr. Obama, as we now have heard nothing about the NSA, IRS, Bengazi, and the litany of other scandals.

  7. Oh, there’s no doubt the Ezra Klein/Matthew Yglesias Axis of Douchebag is hard at work coordinating the message here.

  8. And Generalisimo Francisco Franco is still dead?

This is not news. Anywho…Is it really good to have an ineffectual Secretary of State? If we had a liberal version of the ‘Stache, for instance, would we be better or worse off? Meh…it’s like that old thing about what happens when one hand gets the clap in a forest of heteropatriarchy…

  9. Assuming it was Assad that ordered the use of such weapons. I’ve seen nothing that says he did or didn’t. Just a big ?

  10. Even the ‘stache is saying no on this one. I agree with him, but I held that position before I heard from him. Bolton, while not as crazy as RSM’s crazy cousin, isn’t exactly sane in these matters either, so it should carry a lot of weight that he’s against it.

  11. It would prolly be against the Geneva Convention to drop Cable News Anchors on Syria. Plus, I can’t stir up enough hate in me to call for such a cruel act against Syria.

  12. They’re going to vote for the Authorization.

It’s incomprehensible, but they’re going to do it. The very best outcome we can hope for is that our intervention – whatever it consists of – has no real effect on anything. Every other possibility is much, much worse.

  13. The tangents that radiate out from putting boots on the ground in the most sensitive part of the world are crazy. Calculating possible outcomes and repercussions is impossible. I think we’re being lured in. What’s the exit strategy?

    Run like hell!

  14. Are we intending to attack the stores of chemical weapons which are undoubtedly surrounded by first graders by now?
Are we going to attack the artillery or rocket/missile launchers which are undoubtedly surrounded by second graders by now? Or do we go after the third graders protecting the command infa-structure and personnel including Assad himself? Is Obama’s credibility the same as America’s credibility? Did Obama have any credibility a year ago when he went off script and proclaimed the red line?
Unless and until the answer to ALL of those questions is not just yes but HELL YES any action against either side in Syria would be pointless. Tomahawk missiles probably contribute to global warming too.
