Bad Causes Attract Bad People: Now That the ‘Free Kate’ Narrative Has Collapsed …

Accused sex offender Kaitlyn Hunt was sent to jail after an August hearing.

“A few days from now, Jim and Laurie Smith of [REDACTED], Vero Beach, FL, are going to be murdered by Lycere Freemartin Cunningham for their involvement in the Kaitlyn Hunt case. Mr. Cunningham has learned that Mr. Smith has caused new charges to be brought against Kaitlyn that revoked her bond and landed her back in jail just the other day. He didn’t have to do that to her. It was a deliberate malicious act. He turned her in to the authorities. He and his wife will pay with their lives for [thinking] it is okay to sic law [enforcement] on people.”

There hasn’t been much actual “news” in the Kaitlyn Hunt case during the several weeks since her violations of the “no-contact” order sent Kaitlyn to jail in August, but my Twitter timeline has remained a constant source of updates on the behind-the-scenes arguments involving the “Free Kate” movement. Matt Ross yesterday reported this death threat against the parents of Kaitlyn Hunt’s victim. I am unable to determine if “Lycere Cunningham” is a real person who actually made this threat, and whether it should be taken seriously. (You can Google it yourself.)

What made the Kaitlyn Hunt story newsworthy in May was the appearance of a “mainstream” groundswell of sympathy, created through fictions and half-truths that misrepresented the ages of both Hunt and her victim, and sought to portray Hunt as the essentially innocent victim of anti-gay prejudice. This victimhood narrative had snowballing momentum when I first noticed the story on May 22, but by early June, the facts of the case had been made sufficiently clear that the liberal media dropped the story, and even most gay-rights organizations distanced themselves from the “Free Kate” movement.

However, while the movement lost its mainstream appeal, there was still a sizeable hard core of Kaitlyn Hunt fanatics remaining, but even that crew of misfits, kooks and weirdos was winnowed down pretty seriously after August, when it was revealed that Hunt had flagrantly violated the “no-contact” order of her pre-trial release.

Whatever misplaced sympathy (or twisted affinity) had led people to support the “Free Kate” movement quickly lost its rationale.

Not only did the violations put the original charges in a new and unfavorable light — Kaitlyn Hunt’s interest in her (still) underage victim seemed to be a sort of perverse obsession — but the new charges of transmitting material harmful to a minor looked to be a slam-dunk conviction. What’s the purpose of rallying in support of someone who is almost certain to go to prison no matter what?

Alas, there are kooks beyond reach of any rational argument:

You may remember Rachel Carson Zerbe as author of what Matt Ross called a “jailbait manifesto” in defense of Kaitlyn Hunt. In accusing me of “hate,” Zerbe links to an article at a liberal site called Political Freakshow: “#SmearKate: The Kaitlyn Hunt Saga Has Now Become A Talking Point For Republicans To Push Their Bullshit ‘Pedophilia Is Being Normalized’ Theory And Their Constant Homophobia.”

The problem? That article was written in May, before the truth was widely known, when the belief that Kaitlyn Hunt was a victim of homophobia was still quite widespread. For that matter, contrary to the headline by Political Freakshow blogger Drew Childers, the effort to normalize pedophilia is not a “Republican theory.” It is not “bullshit.” It is very real, the “Free Kate” movement was part of it, and many people are now on the alert for this dangerous tendency.

You keep on, Rachel. Keep on ranting about how Kaitlyn Hunt is a victim of “hate,” and I’ll keep calling attention to sick freaks like you.

UPDATE: Kaitlyn Hunt Gets Another Plea Offer.

  1. Yes, of course I think there should be a cut-off. And for the last time, I know the law is two years higher and was decided on by elected representatives. I simply disagree with where it’s set and it’s because of cases like this which will now take an 18 year old girl and stick her on a sex offender registry in Florida and ruin her life an over what? A little dilly dally with a former classmate who is lower than the age of consent? It serves no one; not society; not the supposed victim; and certainly not the culprit to do that either. I don’t find Hunt attractive and how she looks has ZERO bearing on my views. I don’t see why that would effect any one’s views either but then again you guys have a hair brained theory about everything. The same would hold if she was overweight, pimply, and homely.

  2. Actually it was since the younger girl willingly went to the bathroom to fool around and wasn’t dragged their against her will. An older couple could have just as easily used a look-out if they were screwing around in a bathroom during school hours. I used to use a look-out to smoke cigarettes in the school bathroom. What does this have to do with Hunt seeing a 28 year old? Nothing. Of course I understand context and the context is an 18 year old high school student had a consensual relationship with a 14 year old high school student. End of story. You understand rule and rules only even when they are divorced from both spirit and substance. Her behavior afterward was stupid but again the younger girl also corresponded with her to the tune of over 20k texts which makes her absolutely culpable. No one forced her to return text messages. fact is, she liked Hunt and consensually dated her. I dont need to hear all the crap about how a 14 year old doesn’t have the brains to say yes, either ok?

  3. #1 I know 14 year old’s can’t legally give consent but that doesn’t mean they actually can’t. Second of all age of consent is arbitrary from territory to territory making it meaningless.

#2 It is a fairly normal occurrence for a freshman to date a senior and obviously to fool around on school grounds or elsewhere. Violating the judge’s order was simply dumb but if the former didn’t happen neither would the latter. The younger is totally culpable too in the texting since she returned over 20k texts.

#3 My point is she’s less than 4 years younger than Hunt. It’s like 3 and a half years. I can do simple subtraction moron and it doesn’t make you seem smarter to point this out to me. And because of such a slight age difference which is the soul of the matter the bother over this is overblown and serves no one.

  4. Yeah, we’re busted. Fascists like ourselves who think parents have some responsibilities for their minor children – where the hell do we get off?

  5. It serves the children under 16 years of age that are emotionally and physically damaged by this kind of molestation. That includes the 14 year old in this case.

  6. I know an 8 year old that willingly solicits for sex in trade for numerous items. That is because she was trained to do so from a young age (she is now in foster care and requires careful monitoring).

As she was not dragged against her will do you believe her parental figure should have got off scot free as well for his behaviour and his training of her?

  7. Joey- Here are some words of wisdom for you:

“For they indeed have much blindness who take little pains to guard against spite, and thence become swallowed up in the ancient wickedness of the subtle adversary”.

In more current vernacular- know what you are talking about before trolling in waters over your head.

Here, let me be of service to you:

    http://www.flsenate.gov/PublishedContent/Session/2012/InterimReports/2012-214cj.pdf

    Summarized:
    Florida’s “Romeo and
Juliet” law does not make it legal for an 18 year-old to have a sexual relationship with a 15 year-old; however, it does provide a mechanism for the offender to petition or make a motion to the court to remove the requirement to
register as a sexual offender if certain criteria are met.

  8. Joey, your problem is that you think you know everything. Well, you don’t.
You want to talk about context? What about that beat down on the beach? Normal?
And the 27 y.o. you don’t care about. In the hearing where Ms. Hunt’s bond was revoked the detective and SA fired serious shots across her bow. Watch the video.
Kate’s younger sister Emily isn’t particularly shy when it comes to bragging about her underage drinking exploits. Which lends credence to a lot of talk that’s out there about the sort of house Kate’s mom kept. Drinking, drugs, boys sleeping over, party city if you will.
There’s a lot of context you don’t want to talk about Joey because it undermines your irrational position. Parents are responsible for the welfare of their children. A responsibility Kelley Hunt Smith shirked. The minor child’s parents have the right to protect their child from bad adults like Kelley and Kaitlyn. That’s the only context that really matters in this affair.

  9. Let’s bust out of our rigid mentality of I don’t know…maybe like sex ought be responsible between consenting adults.
Joey Shorteyes with an eye for the young ‘uns

  10. Got it – so it’s not “rape” rape unless it’s forcible, which means you support throwing out all those rape cases where the woman was legally too drunk or stoned to consent. Awesome. Your support of women and sexual assault victims is truly awesome. You must vote democrat.

  11. We don’t feel any particular outrage over you. You’re just another moral dwarf hanging out on the Boulevard of Broken Cultures. You’re good for a couple of laughs though.

  12. Arlene, don’t ya know that Romeo finger-banged Juliet, and Juliet traded sex for trinkets? It was common, everybody was doing it! /sarc.

  13. Again this is Joey posing as if he knows everything. How do you know the minor went willingly? Where did you get that information? She may have been lured there under false pretenses. You don’t know shit. Source it big mouth. You lie to make a point.

  14. There have been several more death threats on Facebook, outted on Twitter, and we’re supposed to just take “Can’t someone with a gun just go and shoot these horrible people [the Smiths]? as “a figure of speech”. One was from Switzerland. She’s been reported to Facebook, but I wonder how the Swiss feel about such threats.

  15. But when an adult has a sexual relationship with a child below the age of consent, a crime has been committed. It doesn’t matter if it was consensual as the child is deemed too young to consent.

  16. “Second of all age of consent is arbitrary from territory to territory making it meaningless. ”

Laws are only meaningless to sickos like you.

“The younger is totally culpable too in the texting since she returned over 20k texts.”

The minor wasn’t issued a no contact order, moron.

” My point is she’s less than 4 years younger than Hunt.”
And she was offered a plea deal which she refused because fools like you were whispering in her ear.
All of your arguments have but one purpose, to chip away at age of consent laws. It’s beyond obvious.

  17. Sweet baby Muhammad (pbuh)! Just when you’re waiting for the finale, things get interesting again…

    “CS” dated a boy recently…

St Kate gets yet another plea deal… WTF!

  18. You keep using that word consensual. You obviously do not comprehend it’s meaning.
What part of a 14 year old in Florida cannot legally consent. Period. That is the law as instituted by the duly elected legislators of Florida as being the will of the majority of her citizens. If you do not like the laws of Florida, move to somewhere more accepting of your mindset, say Iran (they just legalized paedophilia).

  19. They should take her children away from her and commit her to a nuthouse, but liberals are against that, they only want children taken away from 2 parent heterosextual christian households

  20. So if your thirteen year old daughter was dating an 18 year male, you would be ok with that? You are a sick dude and unfit to be a parent

  21. “Nadine Smith, head of the gay rights group Equality Florida, says they’ve connected Hunt’s family with lawyers and signal that they’ll using social media to keep the heat on state attorney Bruce Colton.”

  22. #1 – Uh, yeah, minors not being able to legally give consent really does mean they actually can’t. Minors can’t legally drive a car without a driver’s license and that actually means they can’t even if they make the stupid decision to try. By your idiotic reasoning, minors should be able to drive for the simple reason that they can get behind the wheel, turn the ignition, put the car in gear, and hit the accelerator.

#2 – Once again, no, it’s not a normal occurrence for seniors to date freshmen and even less so for the two groups to engage in sex on or off school grounds. Research bears out that not many 14 year olds are sexually active. It disgusting how you think kids having sex during class time is perfectly normal and acceptable. As for the minor victim’s texting, no, she’s not culpable at all because she is under the age of consent, Kate snuck her the iPod for the purposes of engaging in texts with her, and even if Kate had not done that and the victim had tried to contact Kate on her own, Kate had the legal obligation to ignore that contact.

#3 – Your point was a big, fat lie and you know it. The law says 18 is adult and 14 is under the age of consent. The law doesn’t deal in fractions. Someone who is caught drinking one day before their 21st birthday is still breaking the law.

  23. Of course she’s refused it. Stupid is as stupid does. Then again, Kaitlyn Hunt wasn’t going to get very far considering how her parents raised her.

Naw – still don’t feel sorry for her.
