The ObamaCare Quagmire

“Obama: Anatomy of a World Leader,” by Alex Gray (detail)

“I am absolutely certain that generations from now, we will be able to look back and tell our children that this was the moment when we began to provide care for the sick and good jobs to the jobless; this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal.”
— Barack Obama, June 3, 2008

Attempts by the White House and liberal media to spin their way out of this mess are failing almost as badly as ObamaCare itself.

The simple facts are against them, and the elaborate rationalizations cannot hide the truth. A quick sample of headlines today:

Health Consumers Finding Out
They Were Sold a Lemon

— Megan McArdle, Bloomberg

I had great cancer doctors and
health insurance. My plan was cancelled.
Now I worry how long I’ll live.

— Edie Littlefield Sundby, Wall Street Journal

Will Insularity, Incompetence,
and Lies Doom Obamacare?

What this resembles, quite frankly, is the way George W. Bush’s popularity tumbled in his second term after the insurgency in Iraq started inflicting significant casualties on U.S. troops with no apparent end in sight. Bush was re-elected in 2004 because voters believed (by a relatively narrow majority) that we should “stay the course” in Iraq, and that the insurgency was being defeated. But as 2005 gave way to 2006 and the U.S. death toll in Iraq kept mounting, the perception began to grow that we had taken on an impossible task, that our troops were stuck in a pointless mission they could not win, and there was a political backlash that caught most Republicans by surprise.

ObamaCare is a quagmire, and Democrats have no exit strategy.

  1. The difference being that the media did everything they could to bring down W while they conversely do everything they can to prop up O.

  2. Damn, someone beat me to that observation…nonetheless, it is exactly true. The mass media has consistently shilled for President Obama and Democrats in general, even up to protecting them from their own lies!

  3. Exit strategy? Why would they need an exit strategy? They don’t plan on any exit.

The gambit is that even if Obama becomes a total lame duck over it – now that he’s been safely reelected even at the cost of a working website (they withheld rules and guidelines last year to avoid criticism in the campaign) – and the Democrats lose the Senate in the midterms, they will get the system too established, and wreck enough of the old system, to make it irreversible.

Oh, they honestly thought it would be heralded as the Dawn of a New Day and they would be lifted on the shoulders of the proletariat as they sing their happy union songs but like the good Marxists they are, they are willing to go down for the State, that it may grow ever greater in power.

Not that we shouldn’t trample them in the process, burn the bodies and scatter the ashes, figuratively speaking, but they will all die before they allow repeal.

  4. Even the Soviet Union eventually fell. We won’t have to wait seventy years, the cost of this mess will make it fall all on its own (it will unfortunately bring the rest of the country’s financial system down with it).

  5. Yes. The MSM gave Obama his second term and they can get him through this. MSM mendacity has no limits and the average American’s brain has turned to mush on Facebook/Big Bang Theory/Honey Boo Boo.

  6. The ObamaCare Quagmire

Gahhhhhhh!!!! WHY do people insist on getting that wrong!!??

The word is spelled: quagmire <bloodcurdling scream>, just like it was back in 2003.

  7. Wait till the Tea Party gets its majority in the Senate and the House. It would be easy to repeal this monstrosity and just fix the old system w/c, for all its blemishes seems to be working.
If it works, do not replace it. You could fix it but do not replace it.

  8. You may be waiting a while for that. I support the Tea Party, but I do not see that happening until this country undergoes an epic epiphany. And while such a change of view is certainly possible, I think what might prompt it would be an epic collapse under Democrat rule. Which will be bad in the short term. I am not stating that as if I am wishing for it (I am not) but given the path we are on I think it will happen and it is unavoidable.

That does not mean we do not yell for the rest of the country to get off the tracks. But this train is racing into the station and a lot of people are going to get hurt.

  9. Epic in the literal sense. The collapse that proceeds that epiphany will be epic as well. The US is about to be removed as a world player because of it.
