The Butt-Hurt Epidemic Goes to Court

We live in a world of Special Snowflakes™ who believe they can do no wrong, and that whatever problems they experience in life must therefore be someone else’s fault. Strangely enough, one of these perpetual victims is a Professional Journalist who, when her skill at her craft was criticized, decided to file a lawsuit. Thank God, she lost:

People make mistakes. A legal threat in response to an insult could be a mistake, uttered in the heat of the moment. If the threatener later retracts the threat and apologizes, it may be appropriate to forgive and forget. But a lawsuit is not a temporary mistake. It’s a deliberate and prolonged course of action. Here, Lori Kilchermann — putatively a journalist, relying on the protections of the First Amendment — attempted to silence critics through a frivolous lawsuit, and stuck to her guns when defendants pointed out the patent flaws in her case. Nobody should ever take Lori Kilchermann seriously as a journalist again, and we should question the judgment of any journalistic institution that employs her.

You should read the whole thing.

If something I wrote hurt your feelings, you could file a $1 million defamation/conspiracy lawsuit, or perhaps even a federal lawsuit accusing me of RICO conspiracy.

Or maybe you should just complete the Butthurt Report Form.

  1. She had two choices
1: You insult me so I can sue. I won’t win, but it’ll give me something to do.
    or

2: I can just sit here quietly and not prove how deep the stupid runs.

Chances are I’m going to choose number 2. But then, I have a little self respect left.

  2. How about all those people that Olbermann called “THe Worst Person in the World”? I mean, that can’t possibly be true, there could only be one actual worst person in the world. Presumably his defamation would owe a lot of people damages.

  3. The scary thing which Ken points out is that the damage is done: tens of thousands in legal fees. It’s not about victory; it’s about silence.

  4. “Better to be thought a fool…” as it goes. I hate clichés, but this one has saved me from making an even bigger fool of myself than I already do.

There are many people out there who seem to think the court system exists to demonstrate that they’re in the latter category. It would be merely facepalm worthy if it wasn’t so disgusting.

  5. I won’t sue. But if I did, It wouldn’t be for any penny ante amount like a Million. But, you haven’t caused me any butt hurt. I do like watching you cause a bunch of butt hurt. It has very high entertainment value.

  6. Well Stacy, I was going to file a lawsuit in… oh, I dunno, maybe the International Criminal Court in The Hague over your tweets this morning which were denigrating toward Canadians. I am Canadian and my feelings were hurt. But I think the Butthurt Report Form will suffice.

Since you were nice enough to provide a link to it, I just can’t be angry any more. This made me think twice about filing the complaint, but then confusion made me feel like a victim, which must be your fault, and the end result is I filed the form anyway.

Much cheaper than a lawsuit, wherein I would be victimized by the high cost of legal fees charged by American lawyers. It’s a jungle out there.

  7. Yeah…it’s the alliteration and the syllabic symmetry, see?
I plan to use it – with all due credit of course. We generally have great commenters but there are a couple of these SS folk who need to be told. And we have a PG-13 website (promised the homeschooling parents we would) so we can’t use ad hominem name-calling. Special Snowflake is the ideal work-around.
