Oh, Noes! @AmandaMarcotte Needs New Theory to Explain Secular Misogynists

Apparently, you don’t need a Bible to know feminists are wacko, and this discovery challenges Amanda Marcotte’s worldview:

“Men’s rights”, a code word for opposition to women’s rights (usually women’s right to be free of violence, to be autonomous in their sexual and relationship decision-making, and to be treated as equals in education and labor ), is a popular topic on Reddit, and recently the forums dedicated to it decided to survey their members to get a demographic picture of them. Stephanie Zvan has a summary. Most of it is unsurprising. . . .
However, there’s a couple of things that stand out. This big one is that . . . the MRAs of Reddit were not drawn to the Christian right. . . . On the contrary, 94% of them defined themselves as having no religion. 94%, folks. . . .
The other sort-of surprise is that they are really young.

Ninety percent of the Reddit MRA survey respondents were 20 or younger, and only 4% were over 25. So here you have thousands of young, secular guys who completely reject feminism.

That crashing sound you just heard? That was the sound of Amanda Marcotte’s worldview collapsing into jagged shards.

Of course, Madcap Mandy manages to articulate a rationalization — femsplaining, you might say — but you know this survey will be haunting her dreams for weeks to come. After years of blaming opposition to feminism on the Christian Right, here is unmistakable evidence that relentlessly attacking religion will not automatically lead to greater popularity for feminists. In fact, what drew Stephanie Zvan’s interest to the Reddit MRA survey was her perception, as an atheist feminist, that the online harassment she and other atheist feminists have experienced is coming from men inside the atheist movement. This doesn’t particularly surprise me; see my American Spectator column last August, “No Love for the Godless,” about such complaints.

The explanation of the Reddit survey may be a lot simpler than either Zvan or Marcotte suspect. As a phenomenon, Reddit skews toward younger users, and seems to attract a lot of computer geeks.

Young geeks are not generally religious, and so the secular youth tilt of Reddit MRAs is not really unexpected. The survey does, however, suggest that young males are as hostile to feminism as older men, which may surprise some feminists, but doesn’t surprise me in the least. Given that women are now a majority of college undergraduates, claims of female victimhood — oppressed by the heteronormative patriarchy! — are apt to strike young men as absurd.

And if feminists think the Christian view of women is oppressive, they obviously aren’t paying attention in science class.

  3. 30% more muscle mass make the male outdoors and task oriented, an object and an outside objective will occupy his energy/resource, while the female has to bear a child and find a nest for its safety while milking and caring, that gives an indoor orientation, more crowded spaces populated with more other individuals, she is more often in interaction with child and peers, her language is given together with her milk, the first cultural steps of a baby, while males would often be on their own with cattle, machines, horse, dog, hunting, exploring the outdoors for food and resource.

    In countries where language is strongly gender dependent, different grammar if the speaker is male or female, the kid would speak female language until six even if a male, then understands he must be attentive to male speech and adopt it; in arabic countries at about 10, for nudity/gender consciousness reason the mother does not take the kid to the female hammam(baths) anymore, the major chichat place in those countries.

Women are supposed to be intuitive, nurturing, accepting, and trusting, unlike those harsh and suspicious men. It’s a double-trap; women are brought up indoctrinated into believing that being smart and skeptical is unladylike and unattractive, and at the same time, anyone who dares to suggest that intuition and soothing, supportive words are often unproductive can be slammed for being anti-woman, because, obviously, to suggest that a human being might wantto do more with their life than changing diapers and baking cookies is a direct assault on womanhood.   7. The young men do not believe that women are oppressed. They simply have no evidence that the asserted fact is so. Indeed, most of them have been themselves oppressed by women their entire lives. The idea that women are oppressed is simply not believable to anyone who grew up in the last 30 years.

    I would have been interested to see the educational levels of the participants. I’d bet serious money that they were substantially from the no college/some college not currently enrolled demo. Since kowtowing to feminism is the one of the required rituals of post-secondary education, I’d expect a large number of young men who had been forcefully excluded from post-secondary education.

    And lastly, why is it sufficient to sneer at the idea that men are socially and legally less powerful than women. While feminists blabber about “rape culture”, which means, literally, “men are evil”, the young men are watching their friends and acquaintances being destroyed, bankrupted and even locked in cages on baseless rape charges.

  10. Oddly enough, the only “men’s rights” of which I have ever heard are from men who wanted to be treated equally in divorce proceedings, with regard to support and child custody. Miss Marcotte’s definition of:

    women’s right to be free of violence, to be autonomous in their sexual and relationship decision-making, and to be treated as equals in education and labor

    is a definition that men have no problems with at all: most of us absolutely support women’s rights to be decide with whom they wish to copulate — hoping, “Choose me! Choose me!” as long as it’s not Lena Dunham — and most of us believe that women ought to be paid the same for the same jobs. As for freedom from violence, Miss Marcotte just wants to lump all men in with rapists, and the vast majority of us are not rapists . . . unless, of course, you ask Windy.

Basketball, history, and finance are relatively recent developments in the short time of homo sapiens on this planet and are not directly related to species survival — in contrast sex has been a human survival imperative from the gitgo. Therefore it is presumptuous to assume that there is no “sex processor” in the brain, which after all functions as the primary data processing organ for pretty much every bodily function, conscious or otherwise. Such a “processor” need not be a physical structure (hardware), but might exist as a type of deep conditioning (firmware code) imposed on neural tissue by long-term exposure to different combinations of powerful hormones (rather than socialization and/or education). The bottom line is that we have no means to know for sure one way or the other at this time, rendering his conclusion (of “nuts”) every bit as conjectural as that of trained scientist or a feminist like Amanda Marcotte.

It is interesting how much of our awakening (Male & Female) is getting rid of that first female programming where she (mother) passed onto us all her hopes/fears, what the 4th way calls “feminine dominance”, “you should do this and you should not do that”, “do not question tradition, keep safe”…

    Note also how we need to be AAAAA’d ,approved, admired, admitted, accepted, adopted, acquiesced to, assented,

    or RRRRR’d, respected, regarded, revered, reverenced, referenced, recompensed, rewarded, retributed, …

    in all our actions, for all our actions, to all our actions; and the mother is the first provider of this (dis)approving witness long before we’ve had a chance to have a look onto our actions, question our motives and aims.

    I suspect one reason the young atheist males at Reddit hate feminism is they realize how it makes them automatically guilty, and vulnerable to false assault charges by females at college which they won’t be allowed a defense against.

    Mo is a dried up party girl. You can find one like her in most neighborhood bars in the middle of the afternoon: fifty-ish, wrinkled, made up, chain smoking, knocking back highballs on her bar stool and calling for refills in a raspy voice.

    The problem with being the sexy young thing who gets to the top with snark and daring slit skirts is that one day nobody wants to bang you anymore, and the snark is no longer appropriate for someone your age.

As one of those logical, analytical and intelligent males, I never accepted the premise that tradition was trying to steal my happiness and fulfillment. In fact, I noticed at a young age that the more more feminist, the more progressive, the less traditional, the less happy both men and women were.

    You talk like a person who has spent way too much time in a “studies” courses unlearning every bit of sense anyone had managed to force sideways into your skull.

  29. I checked out the source of the survey. Someone at the Reddit MRA group posted the raw survey data.

    Out of the 3000 or so votes, over 2000 were posted within seconds of one another (in batches of 100+) and all recorded the same answer:

    Atheist/White/Male/Strong Conservative/Pro-Marijuana

    The survey is bad data.

  30. I’ve had occasion to run into the Banged Beast in various BKLYN outposts… there were never any “lads” occupy her zip code (IYKWIMAITYD). Though it was fun to walk up and say, “Hey, you’re the Banged Bitch! You called me a sexist tool in a Slate comment thread!” after climbing off the stage, and turn on my heel and walk away, leaving her a stuttering schmuck while the band stood pointing and laughing.

Imagine a ‘bird lover’ shooting the objects of his affection while noting that “they looked down on their slaughtered companions with such manifest symptoms of sympathy and concern” — and then saying how ‘disarming’ this was, and continuing to shoot them.
