You meet the creepiest people on Craigslist.
That’s probably the only lesson to be learned from the tragic deaths of Brooke Slocum and her boyfriend Charles Oppeeneer. Slocum, 18, was eight months pregnant when Oppenneer posted an ad to Craigslist offering to let other men have sex with her for money while Oppenneer watched. Brady Oestrike, 31, responded to the ad.
Oestrike was a crazy weirdo who collected guns and swords and was into some kind of strange medieval stuff. His former roommate, Rachel Morris, said she moved out two years ago after Oestrike told her he was having fantasies about killing her:
“Knowing what tormented him, knowing the bad dreams and bad things he saw in his dreams and the depth of pain in his poetry, I wasn`t surprised that something traumatic and violent like this happened in his life,” she said. . . .
“He described a lot of bad dreams,” Morris says. “He described a lot of thoughts that were dark and disturbed him.” She says Oestrike was very intelligent and worked a lot.
Though the house was filled with guns and swords, Morris says she wasn’t frightened of him until he made a horrific confession one day.
“He told me that he was having thoughts about killing me and that he was warning me,” she said.
“He’s like, ‘These thoughts are happening to me.’”
Morris says she prepared to move out and encouraged Oestrike to see a mental health professional. “He had said he studied it and believed that he was schizophrenic,” she said.
So this was the psycho who responded to the ad in which Oppenneer offered his girlfriend Slocum for sex. You have to figure the guy who sells his pregnant girlfriend on Craigslist is a certain kind of crazy, but the guy who pays to do it with a pregnant woman while her boyfriend watches? Yeah, he’s operating at a higher level of crazy.
Oppenneer and Slocum went missing. Four days later, on July 16, police found Oppenneer’s headless body in a park. Police found e-mails between Oppenneer and Oestrike, and staked out Oestrike’s house July 17. When he drove away, there was a high-speed pursuit that ended when Oestrike committed suicide, shooting himself in the head. Police found Slocum’s body in the trunk of Oestrike’s car. Police say they believe that after Oestrike beheaded Oppenneer, he then held Slocum captive for days before strangling her. And now the saddest part of the story:
As the details emerged, the slain woman’s father revealed that he knew about the couple’s schemes and said that his daughter was desperate to do anything her boyfriend insisted so that they would stay together to bring up their child.
Greg Slocum said that his daughter was going to move in with her mother two weeks before her disappearance because she had broken up with Oppenneer – but instead, they got back together.
His daughter was desperate to get back with her child’s father ‘no matter what it took – and she paid the ultimate price for it’, Slocum told WOOD-TV.
‘Even to meet men on Craigslist to make some money because her boyfriend was manipulative,’ he said. ‘She would put herself through hell just to make sure her family didn’t get divorced.’
He added that she had written letters to her unborn child about why she met men for sex, and explained that she simply wanted to be loved.
The devastated father said he had warned her against meeting strangers for sex but that she was a teenager with a mind of her own, WOOD-TV reported.
Police still have not found Charles Oppenneer’s head.
The devastated father said he had warned her against meeting strangers for sex but that she was a teenager with a mind of her own, WOOD-TV reported.
And so, he did nothing? There are so many levels of evil in this story, unpacking it all would take 20,000 words. The father’s inaction in the face of clear abuse by daughter’s “boyfriend” is only one of a legion. Had he been a real man and father and stood up to daughter’s abuser, this would not have happened. I don’t care that his 18 year old daughter had “a mind of her own.” Sometimes, you gotta do what you gotta do.
The depravity of it all is just beyond all…
I just got paid $7500 working off my computer this month. And if you think that’s cool, my friend has twin toddlers and made over $8k her first month. It feels so good making so much money when other people have to work for so much less. This is what I do…..

Sick sick sick, and STUPID. I remember the days when women waited until after they were married before the lived with a man let alone have children. These rules were not arbitrary.
[…] Death by Misadventure. […]
Seems I’m not the only one with SPAM problems. Latest Foxfire upgrade has screwed my computer up bad.
RS, I agree 100% with you about the father. He should of had a serious “heart to heart” with the boyfriend and then brought his daughter home away from that situation.

She was clearly very weak and needy. I am terribly saddened by this story.
Quite so, re: the “heart to heart.” I would appear that her parents were divorced. He speaks of her “living with her mother.” There’s a whole other dynamic at work there which probably contributed to her inability to recognize abuse for what it is. I speak as a father of a now 23 year old daughter. I was always cognizant of her associates and had that “heart to heart” before I allowed her to date anyone. She thought I was overly protective during her H.S. years. At her college graduation (Summa Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa, BTW) she thanked me.
My only real sympathy is for the dad and the dead baby.
” ‘Knowing what tormented him, knowing the bad dreams and bad things he saw in his dreams and the depth of pain in his poetry, I wasn`t surprised that something traumatic and violent like this happened in his life,’ she said. . . .”
Sorry, Ms. Morris, but ” ‘something traumatic and violent’ ” didn’t just “happen”; your ex-boyfriend was a psycho.
Very sad, but evolution in action always is, even when it’s excellent news.
zzzzzip, some really awful genes outa the pool.
Unfortunately, ideas like this are not passed on genetically, but through television.
Collecting weapons and fantasizing about killing people? That’s fed by our Satanic “entertainment” industry, not DNA.
Grand daughter who lives with us is almost 18, begins college in a few days. She has a job and a boy friend. The other day, after coming back from a three week trip to visit a friend in NM, she told me she was a feminist.
I’ve met the boy friend and I wasn’t impressed. Nice kid, but no initiative and no goals as far as I can tell. We hope she will meet someone else in school who has a little more on the ball.
She’s a smart kid, GATE all through school, honor society, ect. I just hope and pray she will smarten up before too long.
Kid’s at that age where you can’t tell ’em nothing.
Makes me wonder why Ms. Morris wasn’t more proactive in getting her former boy friend the help he so desperately needed, even if it meant dropping a dime on him.
That’s where I met Obama.
I don’t remember where, but I thought I saw a quote from the girls old roommate that said she was doing the whole Craig’s list thing before she met this guy. I don’t know if it’s true, but if it is, it might help explain why the father was unable to stop her. Can’t stop someone from doing what they want.
If anyone else saw that, help a brother out and link it.
Mmmmmyeaaaah, but the “schizo” part plays the biggest role, by far.
At any given time I’m guessing there must be about ten thousand scripts, screenplays, video projects, novels, and other similar works by fairly experienced authors that go into great detail over things like this. Very dark stuff.
And that’s just the pros and wanna-be pros. I’d multiply that by some ginormous factor to include all the fans and hobby writers. And that would just be people who write.
I knew several folks who were into “live” gaming, where they made up crazy games like “playing army” where they waged stealth battles through neighborhoods and city streets at night. Some of their descriptions got pretty damned dark (if you ask me).
None of them were writers.
Then there’s the gaming industry in general, which I don’t need to bother describing.
Point is, we’re beyond flooded with this kind of bloodthirsty fantasy material. It’s not just “TV” or games. It’s everywhere, and I do mean everywhere.
But the crazy headlines like the one in this article by Stacy seem to be at about the same proportion I recall from the news thirty-five years ago.
Proportion, that is, when one considers the internet.
I’m guessing the “schizo” part and the sociopath parts of society seem to operate on their own schedule, regardless of what the rest of society is up to.
Craigslist and other modern venues just make it easier for those folks.
Geez, that was a long reply. Sorry.
Desperate to keep the family together “no matter what” seemed a bit unhinged, already. Her boyfriend was clearly dangerous as hell.
Poor deluded girl. If only she’d had the strength to say no she might still be alive. That filth Oppenneer got exactly what he deserved. Oestrike should have done the world a favor and offed himself sooner. His roommate is partially responsible. Had she done the right thing at the right time all of this could have been avoided.
I looked through the articles linked and didn’t see that. But her “note” to er baby indicates she had already been “meeting men online for sex” for some time.
It can be really hard to get away from someone who’s nuts or going nuts. She was probably frightened he’d find her.
Although, it’d be a scary world where ex’s could so easily destroy someone’s life by dropping said dimes. Everyone has had that crazy of an ex, amirite?
Yeah, I’m having a real hard time finding much sympathy for anyone but dad (grandpa) and the baby. How the hell did perverts ever find each other before the internet?
Very true. I hadn’t considered that at the time…Makes it even worse, and even more Oppenneer’s fault.
The idea that a woman 8 months pregnant was doing this, unbelievable.
Use Pale Moon, which has the same look & feel & most features (uses the open source code) but doesn’t feed info to Mozilla or Google (after changing a single setting, or “fumigating” it).
Imagine calling the cops about something like that. They’d laugh at her. No direct threat, she left and was in no danger.
It’s not a crime to be psycho or have violent fantasies.
And his self-diagnosis of schizophrenia seems quite unlikely.
“Police still have not found Charles Oppenneer’s head.”
All else being equal, no news story that ends with that sentence is ever going to be boring.
While yes, yes, terrible human tragedy and such, I’m more fascinated by the sheer amount of journalistic gold in this tale of woe.
Seriously: sex, prostitution, pimping, the Internet, murder, and the fact that everyone involved was a degenerate/crazy person (to various degrees)… that’s pretty hot right there. But add in decapitation, high-speed pursuit, and suicide, and you’ve got the j-school equivalent of “box office boffo”.
The icing on the cake? “MISSING HEAD”. Can you imagine how many copies of the NY Post you could sell with just those two words on the cover in 288pt text? “Eat that, ‘NUNS RAPED'” the editor might be tempted to say.
There’s a book to be written in this one, or would have been if all the relevant parties weren’t dead, and thus unavailable for interviews. An “In Cold Blood” for our generation, so to speak.
I have but one question: how did this fail to take place in Florida?
I don’t see what you think the father should have done, exactly. I think it’s highly unfair to call the father evil because he couldn’t force his daughter to make self-respecting or even self-preserving decisions. It’s hard enough to get an under-age person to do even the most trivial thing, like keep their retainer in their mouth.
Nor do you know whether he stood up to the wicked boyfriend. He might very well have said something but if it doesn’t end in a police report, how can one know what happened?
Furthermore, this stupid, stupid woman had rights and responsibilities of her own, as well, including to her unborn child. If the father had killed the boyfriend – really the only “solution” that would actually have removed the problem – he would have gone to jail, and the daughter might well have found some other scum to mistreat her. Women like that are always the “victim” of some man.
Because it is virtually impossible to get crazy people committed. For which we can thanks the ACLU and President Kennedy.
The “father” is typical of parents today. They want to be friendly and nice they do NOT teach their children the dangers of the real world.
When I was growing up girls didn’t shack up let alone have babies without the benefit of marriage. Those were GOOD rules.
[…] TOM: Death by Misadventure […]
Now that I think about it, who am I to question the morality or sensibilities of a woman who wants to be cuckolded by her boyfriend to random strangers they meet online? And so what if she was heavily pregnant? It’s her body. I really must try harder to understand the new emerging awareness.
Does that “heart to heart” include sticking a loaded shotgun barrel in the boyfriend’s mouth and encouraging him to move on with his relationship choices?
If this was my daughter, the headline would have read “Dad shoots Dirtbag Boyfriend Until Dead”
Ads in the back of tabloids and sleazy magazines, if I recall. I tend to sympathize a bit with the Dad, too. The baby suffered a horrible death. I think we all get a bit of PTSD from stories like this.
” said that his daughter was desperate to do anything her boyfriend insisted so that they would stay together to bring up their child.”
It’s very hard for young couples to get married & stay married. the incentives are all wrong, what with lawyers, welfare, and the destruction of industries where a young guy could make a good living. Nowadays youngsters have to risk the cost of a house, likely still end up as baristas. It’s very risky for a guy to get married – lawyers swarm about, welfare makes it safe for a young girl to dump him, sue him, garnish his wages and call him a deadbeat dad.
All those risks, but the guy knows that girls have to put out easy if they want to keep a guy around. So we have highly unstable relationships, where the most cynical people take advantage.
The democrats (lawyers, welfare & EPA bureaucrats, and educators) have destroyed the basis of civilization with their greed.
perverse incentives have destroyed the likelyhood of marriage for many young people. Those who try take great risks. The young girls suffer the worst from our “divorce, welfare & extramarital sex ” culture – even though the guys get shafted pretty bad.
Now you see, Stacy, if it weren’t for judgmental intolerant folks like you these poor people could have followed their exciting life choices openly and publicly, and we would certainly have the head by now.
which setting?
Michigan is the other Florida.
Between eleven and thirty. The void years.
You’re right about getting an eighteen year old to do anything. A friend’s daughter came within a few days of marrying a Middle Eastern man that we all knew was too old, had lied about having other wives, and lied to her about staying in the USA.
If she’d gone through with it, her family would have never seen or heard from her again.
When my sister was 20 she lived with some guy who was abusive. My dad, a friend and a shotgun drove up in a pickup truck to get her.
Dead babies go to heaven.
Sometimes despite our best efforts it just doesn’t work.
This young woman had problems, mental problems.
Anyone who would partake in this sort of behavior has an illness that even the best parenting cannot prevent being acted out.
I’m not an expert or a professional but I’ve personally known someone like this.
