From a Ph.D. Dissertation

“We live in a male-supremacist society. Under it,
women are sexually colonized, are treated as
sexual and reproductive chattel. Under it, women
are subjected to a female sexual slavery that is
at the core of patriarchy’s heart of darkness.
Under it, women are subjected to epidemic level
of male violence, male sexual violence and abuse.
It is a rape culture. It is a woman-hating culture.”

Those are the first five sentences of a doctoral dissertation by Pala Molisa, submitted for a Ph.D. in . . . accounting.

Not kidding. At Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, Molisa (who is male, by the way) dedicated his Ph.D. dissertation in accounting to Andrea Dworkin and explained his purpose:

[The dissertation] explores how radical feminism could be used to make sense of prostitution and pornography. It explores the potential role that accounting could be playing [in] the globalization of the sexual-exploitation industry. And it explores the implications that radical feminism might hold for re-thinking the theory, research themes, and politics of accounting research. It argues that radical feminism not only holds the key to making sense of pornography and prostitution, it also enables us to radicalize our politics and to deepen the normative visions that would inform and enrich our work. Radical feminist politics is revolutionary politics. It is politics aimed at the abolition of “sex,” the abolition of “gender” itself. The vision they point to is a world without submission and dominance as the organizing principles of social life. The vision they point to is a world whereby it is equality rather than inequality that is eroticized, affirmed, and held as the motivating dynamic behind human desires, and sexual and aesthetic drives. They point to a world without rape. It is my hope that this paper makes a small contribution to creating an accounting literature in which this abolitionist revolutionary politics and this radical vision can have a home, a place, a space.

Dr. Molisa is currently a lecturer at the university.

  1. I only skimmed the dissertation but there didn’t seem to be much actually related to accounting, so I’m thinking this guy should just submit this in multple fields. He could slightly alter the words and get a PhD in Chemistry, Physics, Forestry… you name it.

  2. That nobody said that this should be kicked back indicates a serious lack of sanity on the part of the School of Accounting and Commercial Law. Getting away with this crap is why the RadFems seem to be on the march everywhere.

  3. Well, to be fair, a doctoral dissertation is supposed to be original research, and how much original research is left to be done in accounting? 🙂

Of course, I could say that there’s just no accounting for stupidity . . . .

  4. I guarantee you this guy received at least three wedgies a day in school.

And by “school” I mean “college”.

  5. Yeah… even Forestry departments are being overrun.

google “feminist forestry” and be amazed

  6. If they keep this up, they’re going to put the Onion writers out of work. Who needs satire when you have feminists?

  7. Trees are phallic symbols after all… Pffffttttttt.

The academy is far beyond repair.

  8. You can broaden that to “progressive intellectuals.” Now there’s an occult oxymoron if ever there was one.

  9. I like the way he claims that the lack of research done on links between accounting and pornography is due to some male-supremacist “backlash” against feminism, rather than because, I don’t know, no sane person would think to associate them…

  10. 120 pages of unfiltered bullshit. God, what an awfully tedious read that must have been.

  11. From Wikipedia: ”Accounting, or accountancy, is the measurement, processing and communication of financial information about economic entities”

Obviously pornography uses accounting, it’s a business.

Perhaps he’s using the word as in ”there’s no accounting for taste”. Even then the phrase ”potential role that accounting could be playing [in] the globalization of the sexual-exploitation industry.” makes no sense. Accounting is the discipline or means of keeping track of things. I’m pretty sure that’s what college tried to teach him.

  12. That’s the sort of melodramatic writing you see in 13-year-old girls’ diaries. What’s the sixth sentence? “Is he looking at me? I think he might be looking at me. Is my hair ok? Do these pants make me look fat?”

  13. What percentage of the Gross National Product of medieval Central and Western Europe did it take to burn 9 million feminist witches over some 350 years?

  14. You don’t think anyone really read that drivel. She is an oppressed woman give her the degree for just showing up!

  15. You do mean “He” right? From the text above:

  16. Someone should hook it up to a dynamo, we could end our reliance on Middle Eastern oil overnight.

  17. Of course, if he’s not looking at her, that’s because the patriarchy has made women literally invisible to men. If he is, it’s because he’s objectifying her. Win-win! (Well, win-win if you count being able to whine about oppression as a win, but when who doesn’t?)

  18. Yeah, I would feel sorry for his supervisor, were it not for the fact that said supervisor would have had to pass off this ridiculous proposal in the first place.

Oh, Honey if only that were true.

  20. Put me down as another vote for “In a sane world, his oral examination board, if not his advisor, would have said ‘lulz, no, try again.'”

  21. Can’t they deport him for treason against all mankind? Oh, dear, I meant humankind. Maybe Pala is right.

  22. “Ha ha, good one. However, since it is not 1 April, try again. If your real dissertation isn’t on my desk Monday morning, you fail.”

  23. How in the world do you take a black and white field like accounting and turn it into touchy-feely, subjective, unsubstantiated garbage like this? Truly a work of art.

  24. Oh, there’s room for reasonable people to reasonably disagree in accounting. For example, I’m convinced that ESOs cannot be worthless or executives wouldn’t cling to them tooth and nail, and because TANSTAAFL that value had to come from somewhere — namely shareholder equity — yet the last I heard, they were still being accounted for as not costing anything, on the fuzzy logic that the contra account should be unquantifiable performance motivation.

(I studied a little accounting just for fun, when I was studying finance and investing just for fun. Didn’t even have any money to invest at the time.)

  25. Some guys will do and say anything to get laid. I was a hockey goalie at a singles bar once. Great results.

  26. Why on God’s green earth are they offering Ph.Ds in accounting? How is anyone going to make a contribution to knowledge in any dissertation produced by a Ph.D candidate in Accounting?

  27. Something has been said about “Pundecide” over in the “Murderer served only 13 years….” thread.
