‘No More Fun of Any Kind!’

“Thou shalt not joke about sex,” would seem to be the politically correct commandment on campus this fall:

The Ivory Tower Outrage Brigades are once again picking up the cudgel of political correctness and are salivating at the thought of beating some poor miscreant over the head with it.
In this case at Old Dominion College, the party started even before classes began. The Eta Chi chapter of the Sigma Nu fraternity decided to live up to the reputation of frat boys everywhere and hung some banners welcoming freshmen girls to the school.
“Rowdy and Fun. Hope your baby girl is ready for a good time.”
“Freshman daughter drop off.”
“Go ahead and drop off mom too.”

Well, of course, it was Sigma Nu — the Snakes, we called ’em back in the day. Everybody knows how the Snakes are. They are barely more civilized than the Vikings of Alpha Tau Omega, who once so lived up to their savage reputation that a professor at Penn wrote a book about it. What the brothers at Penn dubbed “the ATO express” — and subsequently defended as “multiple consensual intercourse” — is more commonly known as a “gang bang” or “pulling a train,” but a feminist professor called it Fraternity Gang Rape. The girl was tripping on four hits of acid, and was therefore deemed “incapacitated,” but whose fault was that? How were the ATOs, who were themselves in their customary state of extreme intoxication, supposed to know that the girl yelling “F–k me! F–k me!” at 3 a.m. was more “incapacitated” than they were?

That was 1983, and the news accounts of ATO’s suspension at Penn sparked widespread commentary. Anybody who knew anything about college life understood (a) that many girls went to frat parties with the specific purpose of getting drunk and having sex, and (b) that some girls were quite willing to take on more than one frat brother at a time. In the 1983 incident at Penn, at least five ATOs were involved. When the fraternity was accused of rape, after feminists on campus held rallies demanding that the administration take action, the ATOs argued in their defense that such incidents of “multiple consensual intercourse” occurred once or twice a month at Penn. That is to say, the ATO brothers felt they were being unfairly punished for doing something that was a customary and accepted part of campus life. The feminist professor, taking this claim as truthful, used it to argue that college girls were being routinely victimized by “the phallocentric social order.”

Were they? Certainly, parents do not send their daughters to Penn with the expectation that the girls will drop four hits of LSD, go to fraternity parties and get banged in the basement of the ATO house. However, the in loco parentis doctrine on campus got thrown away during the student uprisings of the 1960s. And if you look at that 1983 incident objectively — a crazy girl yelling “F–k me! F–k me!” at 3 a.m. when everybody had been drinking all night — is it really fair to say the ATOs were more responsible for what happened than she was? The question is not one of morality, but of equal justice under the law. Feminists ranting about “the phallocentric social order” are simply trying to justify deliberate unfairness against males, to claim that males bear 100 percent of the responsibility for any sexual encounter they have, while females have no responsibility at all. Say what you will about fraternities, or about college guys in general, but I do not see how this women-are-never-responsible standard can be justified on the basis of “equality.”

Meanwhile, at Old Dominion University, the Sigma Nu chapter’s expression of phallocentric humor was not appreciated:

ODU officials . . . say they are investigating. . . .
“Messages like the ones displayed yesterday by a few students on the balcony of their private residence are not and will not be tolerated. The moment University staff became aware of these banners, they worked to have them removed. At ODU, we foster a community of respect and dignity and these messages sickened us. They are not representative of our 3,000 faculty and staff, 25,000 students and our 130,000 alumni. . . .Any student found to have violated the code of conduct will be subject to disciplinary action.”

College boys want to have sex with college girls? And actually make jokes about their heterosexual intentions? Outrage!

Adam Steinbaugh discusses the First Amendment aspects of the Old Dominion University incident, condemning the gratuitously offensive banners while at the same time defending the value of free speech. Being old enough to remember when students took over campus buildings for illegal sit-in protests at Columbia University and elsewhere, I cannot see how liberals who celebrate the plainly criminal acts of Sixties radicals now expect us to take them seriously when they act indignant about rude frat boys who act like rude frat boys.

In 1968, radical students ‘liberated’ Columbia University.

By the same token, I do not see how liberals who celebrate the “Sexual Revolution” of the 1960s can now expect us to take them seriously when they express outrage at the crudely licentious behavior of young men. (Note that liberals never condemn the behavior of young women, because to do so would be sexist “slut-shaming.”) In 1969, the “Weatherman” faction of the left-wing Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) made “Smash Monogamy” their motto, so that participation in orgies was practically a requirement for their followers. One of the leaders of that terrorist cult, Bill Ayers, was subsequently a Chicago political comrade of young Barack Obama. How is it that now we have liberals acting as the forces of repression, when their leaders were once advocates of revolution? It’s rather the same way that the Bolsheviks, who were ruthless in overthrowing the government of Russia, were then equally ruthless in suppressing dissent, to ensure the Bolsehvik regime could never be overthrown. The tremendous irony of Soviet history was that those who had done the most to establish the Bolshevik dictatorship — including Leon Trotsky, who led the Red Army to victory in the Russian Civil War — were subsequently liquidated by Stalin.

Alas, those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it, and no college student today is taught this kind of history. Facts mean nothing to the totalitarian ideologues who now control university life in this country, and whose only task is to indoctrinate youth into supporting the Democrat Party agenda. There will henceforth be zero tolerance of heterosexual males making jokes on campus, because the policy of the Democrat Party is against males and against heterosexuality, too.

  1. It’s simple: the mechanics of sexual intercourse place the male in the superior position — even if she’s on top! — because he is penetrating her, and therefore not only is he the more responsible party, intoxication notwithstanding, but Teh System must be rigged adjusted to overcome the male advantage in copulation.

  2. Ah! But which is the more powerful force – the one that penetrates or the one that envelopes?

This is like one of those philosophical conundrums that kept the Sadducees and Pharisees arguing for centuries!

  3. How is it that now we have liberals acting as the forces of repression, when their leaders were once advocates of revolution?

Sometimes I like to think that maybe all this is being perpetrated by a group of stealth conservatives to gradually scare kids back into a moral sexual ethic.

After the way the left took over education, journalism and entertainment, I’d like to see my side get devious too!

  4. The answer is: it depends on your goal. If the goal is to weaken Teh Patriarchy, then the penetrative force is more powerful, and must be constrained by serious legal action. If your goal is to Champion Great Women, then of course the enveloping force is the greater, and nobler one!

  5. I’m not so sure that the *problem* is that the frat boys are acting like frat boys so much as that their prank, as it has been called, is a just bit too honest about the social setting at most universities.

  6. I am not ashamed to say that one of the things for which I hoped when I matriculated at the University of Kentucky was to find a hot chick and get laid, often. Somehow, I don’t think that I was the only guy who had that goal.

Fortunately, I found that hot chick, she moved in the next day, and I spent the entirety of college not having to look for girls; that made life simpler, and a lot more fun.

The moral of the story is: find one girl, because you really don’t need more.

  7. *Sigh*

The signs were tacky. Big whoop.

Is there the faintest chance that sanity – and personal responsibility – will ever be reasserted?

  8. Funny, the Sigma Nu chapter at my alma mater (perennial sports powerhouse Gettysburg College, “The Harvard of South Central Adams County”) was probably the quietest, most reserved frat on campus. Our Animal House, and the one that got suspended for “multiple consensual intercourse”, was Sigma Alpha Epsilon. Part of their mistake was that, since it was a Lutheran college, the church hierarchy got dragged in. Their real mistake, however, was in having t-shirts printed to commemorate the event. That cost them four years of exile.

  9. Our esteemed host asked:

How were the ATOs, who were themselves in their customary state of extreme intoxication, supposed to know that the girl yelling “F–k me! F–k me!” at 3 a.m. was more “incapacitated” than they were?

Simple: if they could get an erection, they weren’t incapacitated. That might seem a ridiculous notion, given that we are talking about the capacity to consent to coitus, but we all know that’s how a jury will look at it.

  10. The boys have the constitutional free speech to be rude and the university and fraternity have the contractual administrative right to tell them to stop doing it (I am sure there are provisions for this under their charter). And the appropriate response by the school is: “Take down the sheets” There needs to be sanity on both sides.

  11. Oh, I agree that the sheets were inappropriate, and should be taken down. But they were tacky, not “sickening”. I don’t much care for hyperventilating over mere bad taste.

  12. The difference between tacky and sickening is whether you want to be Smugly Offended™ or not.

One wonders: will some freshmanperson, or her parents, sue because ?? has created a Hostile Collegiate Environment?

  13. This being long ago and far away, the young lady quietly de-matriculated and was never seen again.

  14. Probably the “nicest” fraternity at my alma mater was Kappa Sig, and they were also the most popular fraternity because (brace yourself for the brutal logic) the prettiest girls wanted to be at the fraternity that treated them with courtesy. In other words, have as much fun as you want, but if you want top-quality girls to show up for your party, make sure it’s a safe environment for them.

The “bad boy” act often works at an individual level, but you cannot expect beautiful women to hang around with a whole crew of bad boys, where every guy feels entitled to act like a jerk and nobody makes any effort to enforce even a minimum level of decorum. Ultimately, courtesy is necessary to create and maintain social environments where men and women can interact. Alas, many parents don’t teach good manners, and schools don’t, either. Absolute barbarism among the young is the result.

  15. It’s simple: the mechanics of sexual intercourse place the male in the superior position — even if she’s on top!

So, what you’re saying is, The Kama Sutra wasn’t available at Lexington bookstores when you attended UK.

  16. Once Stalin had seduced the then-16 year old Natasha Aleluliayeva, he got really strait-laced. It’s not new.

  17. Check out the comments on the Washington Post article — the girls/women are overwhelmingly nuts suggesting that any expression of healthy male sexuality/lust not only contributes to rape culture but means these boys are obviously rapists — it is frightening these girls are pathetic cripples with absolutely no understanding of human nature. They also have no sense of humor whatsoever. I guess I’m old, but when I was in undergrad we considered this normal/funny behavior from guys and we all knew what frat culture was like, and it was ok — what has happened to these girls?

  18. I’m reminded of the stories of girls wanting to hang out with the Hell’s Angels. Those stories seldom ended well.

  19. A defense attorney worth a plugged nickel would point out that men can get erections in their sleep.

  20. I had a friend who, for all intents and purposes, was raped in his sleep by a long-ex ex-girl friend who, apparently, had decided she wanted a baby. After she decided that he’d make the best baby daddy (having a real job and all), various of her friends informed him of *at least* eight other potential baby daddies. Unfortunately, the DNA testing fingered him.

Morale of the story — don’t leave your front door unlocked, just because you live in a small town.

The other moral of the story is: keep it in your pants until you’re honestly married and you won’t have “ex-girlfriend” problems.

  21. For all men out there, hypothetical Republican get together;

    1) lots of booze, broads (real women) and BBQ
    2) talk about sports, guns, women, military, freedom, making lots of money

    Democrats;
    1) wine, women (who hate men) and sushi
    2) talk about abortion, HILLARY!, gay marriage, climate change, income inequality

Hey guys which party would you like to attend?

  22. “What has happened to these girls” is the same thing that leads these girls to dress as though they are skanks and then shriek, “Hey! My eyes are up here!” when a man dares to look at what they’re daring him to look at.

  23. Is that what parties with democrats, and republicans are really like? Huh…they both sound kind of lame. And are you saying conservatives don’t eat sushi, or drink wine? Honestly, this is why the conservative base is in trouble.

  24. It was probably on fraternity property, but most fraternities operate under charters with the school (they agree to abide by certain standards)…so yes the school can tell them what can and cannot not do.

The school administration would be wise not to over react to something like that.

  25. I actually thought the sheets were funny. The “drop off mom too” thing is what made it obviously a joke.

I suppose the folks at ODU don’t have my finely-honed sense of humor.

  26. Yeah. In fact I was thinking that if I went there and was in a sorority, I would’ve gotten my sisters to help find a willing transexual who could show up there and say, “I’m Caitlyn, and I’m a freshman”, you know, just to further the joke. Bet those sheets would’ve come down on their own.

  27. I’d go to the first one.

Reminds me of a family reunion once, outside of Prattville, AL. I was the only girl cousin in the family at that time. When we get there, my parents go in, but I hang back on the porch with my boy cousins.

One says to me “You carryin’?” I say, “Eyup”, so he says, “Let’s see.” So I pull my favorite gun out of my purse. He looks at me with disgust and says, “That’s it?” So I pull up the hem of my jeans so he can see my ankle holster. Just for fun, I pull the pocketknife out of my back pocket, and the one out of my purse. And mention the rifles in the trunk and the baseball bat in the backseat. He says, “Huh. A’right then.”

  28. I remember reading a rant from back in the day about the difference between the hippies’ PR and reality, with Haight & Ashbury always featuring a couple of naive young girls from elsewhere as the centerpiece of the biggest gangbang since the night before.

  29. Notice that the radical feminist movement followed in the immediate aftermath of the “Summer of Love”?

    NOT a coincidence, obviously.

To explain what happened would take a lot more time than I’m willing to spare, but it’s really about demographics. The Baby Boom started in 1946. Eighteen years later, the Beatles and civil rights happened at roughly the same time. The older generation was discredited in the eyes of their children, and here was this pop cultural phenomenon — long hair and rock-and-roll — happening right there on TV.

So, 1964. All those girls — 12, 13, 14 — who screamed so loud at Beatles concerts nobody could hear the music? Flash-forward three years to 1967, and all those girls are now 15-17. the Vietnam War is all over the nightly news, Dad’s yelling to the kids, “Turn that damned music down!” The teenage daughter is rebelling against authority, and the parents are trying to crack down on her. Then the word gets around: SAN FRANCISCO.

    Music. Peace. Love.

    Summer. It’s groovy, man.

Next thing you know, she’s piling into a car with three or four of her friends and ZOOM!

Demographics: Older guys, born in 1946, ’47, ’48, they’re 19 to 21 in the Summer of ’67, and they’re hanging around San Francisco when ZOOM! Here come all these eager young teenybopper chicks, rebelling against their parents back in Squaresville USA, and guess what happens?

Those eager young teenybopper chicks got screwed every which way possible, passed around from one guy to another, crashing in some crummy pad with a bunch of syphilitic losers, O.D.-ing on whatever kind of drugs happened to be available.

That’s where Charles Manson (a convicted pimp) collected his first followers. and the negative fallout from that kind of scene produce a backlash against the Sexual Revolution — on the one hand, feminism, but on the other hand, also, the “Jesus freaks” who helped inspire the revival of Christian evangelicism.

Honestly, the Duggar family and today’s radical feminists are really an echo effect of what happened nearly 50 years ago.

Anyway, that’s the short version of what happened. The long version I ain’t got time for today.
