by Smitty
This blog is not clear whether an opportunity for modern emotional politics is being missed or not:
the Republican presidential candidate and multibillionaire business tycoon said in a forthcoming book that he still “always felt that I was in the military” because he attended a military boarding school and “dealt with those people.”
Had Trump also felt even momentarily black, and or female, while harboring military sentiments, the base of his appeal could be expanded considerably beyond those with weird hairstyles and a craving for primal scream politics.
In summary, if you’re gonna feel, feel yuuuuuge.
via Instapundit
“I feel like I was in the military”. If Obama said something this stupid he would be mocked for weeks, maybe life!
What has Obola ever done besides community agitate?
That’s all he’s doing now.
He engineered the “Hands up! Don’t shoot!” lie with the express purpose of inciting racial animosity and a war on cops so he could nationalize the police, AKA “Gestapo.”
Has Obola ever earned an honest dollar in his life?
Trump has.
“Trump is no conservative!”
“Yeah, but Sarah Palin and Ted Cruz both take the stage with him, and now that Walker has pimped himself to his pro-amnesty donors and Jindal has evaporated, he’s the only anti-amnesty candidate in the race… and the polls show him beating all the Democrat possibles, and even picking up chunks of the black vote.”
“…look- squirrel!”
Barry is already mocked night and day by conservatives. No further ammunition is needed.
And progressives would just say, “He IS in the military! He’s Commander-in-Chief! And look what a fine job he’s done destroying our military, which is what we’ve always wanted. *sigh*. Isn’t he just swell? He’s sooooo dreamy! Wait, is he looking at me? Oh my gosh, he is, isn’t he? How is my hair, is my hair ok? I’m totally getting a tingle down my leg.”
It wasn’t about accomplishments, it was about saying stupid things.
Do you believe that going to a military school is the equivalent of serving in the military…because Trump “feels” like it?
True. When it comes to mocking, Obama is a target rich environment.
Call it primal scream politics if you want, but I see it more as burning the field to make it productive again. The one thing about Trump is that he won’t try to convince you that a shit sandwich is really a BLT. He may tell you it is the finest gold-flaked shit in the world recovered from his own ass, but he’s not hiding the shit under some baloney.
Currently, Bush and Rubio are swimming with cement shoes while Carson is propelled into 2nd place. In the mean time, Cruz and Fiorina are slowly overtaking the establishment picks. Does anyone here believe any of that would be happening without the chaos that Trump brings to the race?
“it was about saying stupid things.”
Show me any politician that doesn’t say a handful of stupid in their lifetime.
It happens
Politicians do say stupid things. This one struck me as weapons grade stupid.

Did someone mention military feelings?
Off topic, but things like this will prompt the Chinese and NoKos to invade Japan.
What has he done besides agitate? Become the first black President?
We already have a national police force: DHS. They’re the ones handing out grants to local police departments for military hardware, surveillance equipment, etc.
Like Obama is the first President to do a little racial demagoguing? Lol! Trump is doing it right now. Ronald Reagan, and Richard Nixon did it before him. What gets you upset is that this time it’s coming from the other direction, and plenty of whites agree with him.
Wow. That would prompt an elementary school to invade Japan. : )
You may not be old enough to remember Reagan and Nixon, but I am, and I call bullshit on your demagoguery accusations.Citations or GTFO.
Or maybe 11th grade. I guess Trump falls short of a proper “stolen valor” call, but most veterans are more keen on substance than style.
It’s really hard to test your counter-factual. Also, I can’t think of any sane reason to re-elect Obama. Come to think of it, reasons to elect him in the first place elude me. Oh, yeah: JS McCain is a putz.
Our next president should be someone who understands the military culture, to better perform the duties of C-in-C.
Statements like that one of his give me great pause.
…your dislike for Trump blinds you to Americans fed up with the existing political and economic system.
Reagan? Welfare Queen rhetoric, dog whistle politics, Southern Strategy. Nixon-Southern Strategy, the way Nixon and Hoover went after the Black Panthers, and other black civil rights leaders, etc., etc.
Why is it “demagoguery” for a black president to talk about the experience of being black, and empathizing with the black community, who I might add voted for him at near 100%? That’s crazy. Second, and this applies more to “joe”, how can a conservative, or libertarian not support a movement that is fighting police overreach which includes mass surveillance, civil rights violations, militarization, and unconstitutional tactics? Not to mention they’re almost totally unaccountable. Any person who believes in small government should want to reign the police in.
Obama has accomplished zero in his life that did not come as a result of his playing off the fact that he is black.
Honest dollar you ask? Since he’s half white, then no he hasn’t.
True, I only have past performance to go by and current congressional leadership who have gone from asking us to eat the shit sandwich “just one more time, we promise” to full on Judge Smails, “you’ll get nothing and you’ll like it”.
I’m not quite sure Hurricane Trump could have fixed 2008. We were more innocent then and thought the American public would be more rational even with McCain playing Mr inevitable and doing everything he could to be uninspiring.
Like this……
Earlier this evening Senator Lindsey Graham said that his candidacy was still viable and that all he had to do was convince folks like us to place our trust in him to defend and protect us and our families.
I hope he’s holding his breath, that way I can wake up to good news in the morning.
“I’ve always felt that I was a cop, having spent so much time in the back of…..”
Nah…just doesn’t work.
The Black Panthers were “black civil rights leaders”?
I reckon it’s all in your point of view but most people would refer to them as black nationalists, terrorists, criminals or any combination of the three.
“ but I see it more as burning the field to make it productive again.”
For some time now some of us had seen that, Republican politicians failing to act as Conservatives, electing Hillary as a way to get that done. Now with Mr. Trump as an option we can get that done while still frustrating the Progressive-Liberals. A win-win as far as I’m concerned.
Cicero (hello there from Twitchy!); I would be far more impressed with ‘Americans fed up with the existing political system’, if they had chosen a better vessel to express their frustration. Trump is an egotistical asshat, with no convictions except his self-trumpeted greatness. Flinging poo in a semi-random pattern is not praise-worthy behavior.
How in God’s green earth is Rubio worth of being bracketed with Jeb Bush? This election season is rather silly.
The “Southern Strategy” has been proved to be liberal wishful-thinking BS for decades, “dog whistle” politics is seemingly only detectable by liberals and the weak sisters of the GOPe, and Hoover was going after the Black Panthers since they were founded as part of the FBI’s war on domestic Communism. Which, since you were seemingly born yesterday, dates back to the Truman Administration. Also, since you didn’t bother providing any links to back up your nonsense, you’re done here. You had your chance and you blew it.
I’m sure I wasn’t the only one hoping something disabling but non-fatal happened to Stacy’s Crazy Cousin John after inauguration day 2009, if he’d won.
Makes no sense to me either.
You and me both brudder!
So, Smitty, those kids coming out of that military boarding school at Annapolis, they’ve got no idea what life in the military might be like?
How about The Citadel?
How about Vally Forge Military Academy?
How about the Trump haters find a different hobby horse to ride? This one is pretty stupid.
You might have a point if Trump had said that. But he didn’t.
That’s why none of them take orders from fresh grads of West Point, Annapolis, and Colorado Springs. Or the Citadel, for that matter. Or some 2LT from a farm school ROTC program.
Maybe all those kids don’t know anything about the military. But you still damned well salute them when they walk buy.
“According to an upcoming biography and interview excerpts in The New York Times.”
Now, the NYT isn’t the most reliable news organization, but they usually get direct quotes right.
From the NYT:
Donald Trump Likens His Schooling to Military Service in Book – The New York Times
“My number was so incredible, and it was a very high draft number. Anyway, so I never had to do that, but I felt that I was in the military in the true sense because I dealt with those people,” he told Mr. D’Antonio.
The author seemed taken aback by this. Not many of the academy’s alumni “would compare military school with actual military service,” he wrote. “But the assertion was consistent with the self-image Trump often expressed.”
During an interview for the book, Mr. Trump removed a shoe to show the author the cause of his medical deferment. “Heel spurs,” he said. “On both feet.”
Mr. Trump relished his five years at the military academy and bemoaned the dwindling enrollment at such schools.
“After the Vietnam War, all those military academies lost ground because people really disrespected the military,” Mr. Trump said. “They weren’t sending their kids to military school. It was a whole different thing, but in those days — 1964 I graduated — that was a very good thing or tough thing, and it was a real way of life at military academy.”
***********
Also – the NYT piece notes that the book in question was written by a guy who hates Trump, and whom Trump cut off interviews with after six hours and refused to speak to him again.
But hey, you want to take an excerpt from a Politico article quoting (paraphrasing) a NYT article as gospel truth without checking either, be my guest.
Trump and I are the same age. I went to a “ritzy private boarding school” outside of Philly, Class of 1964. And I knew kids who were going to Valley Forge Military Academy a few miles away. Entirely different experiences. And VFMC was very military oriented. It was a feeder school for West Point and Annapolis at the time. http://bit.ly/1JTG60n
So you’ve been glued to Trump’s backside and know for sure he didn’t say it? And your evidence for this is…?
It certainly sounds like the kind of lame ass braggadocio we hear from Trump on so many subjects.
I’m sure someone will ask him about the veracity of those quotes between now and 2016.
Make your words tender & sweet, William. You may have to eat them one day!
Ah. I reply nicely, with cites, and you go right to the insults. That’s fine, dumbass. Now why don’t you settle right down and blow me, you moron?
Or go suck one of your faves who aren’t Trump. And no, I don’t reply sweetly to drooling tools.
Back to your Depends, gramps. I’m done. And it wasn’t that difficult, either.
Now bark for me some more, idjit.
Poor baby Willie, with his tiny baby willy. Project much about insults?
I heard Trump say something pretty stupid (or perhaps ignorant) about the Keystone XL pipeline on the Levin show about I week ago, too. You want to deny his words and the evidence on that as well, because you have a hard time accepting (or maybe recognizing) reality?
Your “cites” did not disprove that he said the other, but perhaps you were just too simple to know that. Or feeble minded. The projection is very strong with you.
Your love affair with Trump may be premature, like your other ejaculatory comments.
Bark some more, idjit.
“This one is pretty stupid.”
-William’s autobiography in five words.
I originally saw that in a comparison with a much earlier clip from the Imperial Japanese Navy (can’t remember the blog). The newer one is just so Ghey.
Wow; This was an incredibly nasty and personal thread. RSM and Smitty, please consider developing a banning policy on repetitive personal attacks, because reading this kind of stuff just makes one not eager to visit for the next year (If Trump becomes the Republican candidate) And yes, I can- of course- “not let the door hit me on the way out” but I like visiting here, just don’t like seeing all the vitriol. Both Ace and William Jacobsen (sp) have issued warnings on unacceptable behavior. It might be time to do that here because the fewer people that visit the fewer people hit the tip jar
Let’s see, CNN, National Journal, Breitbart, The Daily Kos, NRO, & al have tagged Rubio as an establishment candidate. There are others who believe he is an anti-establishment candidate because he supposedly was a Tea Party candidate in 2010, but he was running against Charlie Crist. Compared to Crist, even Jeb would be a welcome alternative.
And what has Rubio done since getting into office to burnish his outsider credentials? Jumping into bed with McCain, Schumer, and Dick Durbin does not sound like someone committed to bringing fresh ideas. Does the party establishment regularly pick outsiders and agitators to deliver the Republican response to the state of the union address?
Are you f*cking kidding me? There is a world of difference between actual military service, with its concomitant risk of being killed or maimed in training, to say nothing of combat, and spending time at a military prep school or college. I thought you were a fairly bright guy, Bill, and it’s a real shock to me that you don’t grasp this very fundamental difference between the two.
That’s usually the standard I apply, and I’m going to be warning a few people to watch what they type.
Both of you need to cool your tools and knock off the personal attacks. I don’t care who did it first, but it’s going to stop or I’m going to start banning people.
So…the students at The Citadel and West Point aren’t in the military. And students there know nothing about the military life. Got it.
He didn’t say he was in the military. He said he understood it because of his time at military school.
I always thought you were fairly bright guys, too.
You don’t care who started it? What is this, kindergarten?
Ban away, buddy. I’m outta here. And yank my blog off your list. The morons who come over to my place from here are almost uniformly idiots.
Like Mike, who is a chew toy, nothing more.
Like who?
Frankly, I’m more outraged by the Vets left to die at the VA. Which still hasn’t been corrected.
