‘Medical’ Marijuana: There Must Be an Epidemic of Glaucoma in the ‘Hood

Want to read something laugh-out-loud funny? This woman’s account of a guy who bummed a ride home after her local college class is worth a read if you enjoy, uh, authentic urban dialect.

The highlight of the story — which occurs in Los Angeles, we can gather — is a visit to a legal “medical marijuana” vendor “off Crenshaw somewhere.” Da Tech Guy points out how this story shows the way in which California’s legalization of marijuana for “medical” purposes has basically allowed the state to gain tax revenue from a hitherto illegal market. It is obvious from the woman’s story that “medical” marijuana is being sold to people whose only disease is a desire to get high. Otherwise, we would have to imagine that there has been an epidemic of glaucoma in, uh, low-income urban communities.

  1. “Medical marijuana” has been the greatest scam ever. You need te medicinal effects of cannibis? The prescription drug Marinol® has been around for a long time now, being used to treat nausea and appetite loss in cancer patients, but with some of the psychotropic effects removed. That is medical marijuana, but that wasn’t good enough for the advocates. No, you had to have smokable pot for it to really work, we were told.

It was never more than a lie told to get the foot in the door to legalize pot.

  2. Hold these two ideas in your head simultaneously:
    1. This person is in American college.
    2. This is how she speaks: we talking finance and universities and shit.

  3. Two points, if I may.

Hemp was the industrial fiber for centuries. It was so useful and easy to grow that during WWII the laws were changed to encourage hemp production for the war effort. Hemp paper is more durable than wood-pulp paper, and far easier today to make with much less environmental impact.

Second, for all the noise made about the dangers of marijuana, there are thousands more drunk driving deaths alone than marijuana deaths combined. Yet alcohol is legal.

And no, I do not use.

  4. You have no idea how many deaths or accidents there are as we have no way of accurately measuring THC in blood content. Even a blood draw or a ‘piss test’ can include levels that are thirty days old. Quit making statements that have no basis in reality. It could be like driving on acid. We don’t know.

We cannot even measure if a person is using at all at a traffic stop unless they have killed or injured someone. If they have not the most they get is a breathalyzer. Which shows evaporation blood content of alcohol. They could be high as Cheech and Chong’s pet doberman and nothing would show.

  5. I have never once met a person who advocated medical mj who did not use recreationally. Not. One. Person. That includes the drs.

  6. “Medical marijuana”

Seriously, where are the documented FDA trials and double blind studies that support it??

  7. I recall seeing a study a while back that tested people’s driving abilities while sober, while drunk, while stoned, and while drunk and stoned.

Unsurprisingly the sober people did best, followed by the stoned, the drunk and stoned, while those that were just drunk did the worst.

  8. The FDA put marijuana in Schedule I, which makes those kinds of trials virtually impossible. Not even cocaine is in Schedule I.

  9. Med marijuana is about 99% trying to get the camel’s nose under the tent for legalization. Most legitimate medical marijuana use is widely already in use in most states. There are plenty of anti nausea and glaucoma medications out there. It is a false issue.

I don’t care if someone on chemo wants to vape, smoke or eat marijuana make them feel better. I do care if we are encouraging kids (granted indirectly) to do it on their lunch breaks at schools.

  10. The argument that alcohol is worse than marijuana and it’s legal moves me not in the slightest; we’d be much better off if both were illegal, and not both legal.

Now, I’d be perfectly happy with legalizing marijuana as long as it came with a provision that testing positive made a person permanently ineligible for welfare and unemployment benefits.

Making fun of her for her “authentic urban dialect” is racist — and sexist to boot! — and I thoroughly denounce you for it.

  12. Pardon, I have a simple question. Well, more than one but they are all versions of the same one.

Why should government ban or control something “for your own good?”

What will government ban for “your own good” next?

What if they decided to ban something that you wanted and used often? Like, say, toothpaste?

  13. OK, bottom line.

Is it your contention that there is/has been suitable scientific studies and research (comparable to the incredibly onerous FDA requirements applied to any new drug) done to prove that smoking marijuana remedies the multitude of various and vague symptoms that is claimed?

  14. I don’t advocate “medical mj.” I just do not think it’s government’s job to control people “for their own good.”

People should make their own choices and accept the consequences and responsibilities.

If we don’t go after Joe Sixpack for drinking Coors during the Cowboys game, we shouldn’t go after someone for smoking weed.

On the other hand, I don’t support DUI.

  15. Suppressed, if they were allowed at all. That’s “public medicine” for you.

There was one conducted by NYC in the 30s or 40s I think. Among other things it found that the addictive properties had been exaggerated and it did seem to be effective against some types of pain.

Face it, you don’t get government grants unless you deliver results the politicos want to hear.

  16. I’ve got people telling me that there is a consensus on climate change and all evidence to the contrary is oil company propaganda.

    Same thing.

And again, why is it government’s business what you do or use? Do they control your shoelaces? Did you get an approved list of sexual positions to use? Did they tell you you couldn’t use butter on your waffles?

Oh wait, they did that last one, didn’t they?

  17. Peter McWilliams wrote the libertarian classic Ain’t Nobody’s Business If You Do.

He was arrested for using marijuana medically, his assets and computer seized, and was prevented at trial from telling the jury about the possible benefits of medical marijuana. He died choking on his own vomit in the shower.

I’m saying that you can’t childproof the world, you can only worldproof your kids.

  18. Ah, for those halcyon pre-War-on-Drugs days, when “marijuana culture” wasn’t about aping the hardest cons on the cell-block….

  19. It’s my bottom line that there are mountains of evidence in favor of it, and that the federal government has kept said suitable scientific studies and research from happening.

How do you feel about the fact that the Drug Czar is the only government official that is required by law to lie? The Drug Czar is required to deny any evidence that marijuana is not harmful, no matter how overwhelming it is.

  20. I do not advocate using marijuana in any capacity but the ridiculous punishment for it is crazy and the justifications for outlawing it were racist. At the very least it should be a meager misdemeanor for pot smoking.

  21. Irvin Rosenfeld is a living counter-example. His use of medical marijuana that is provided by the federal government has kept his bone spurs in check for over 30 years now.

There’s your fucking “supporting evidence”, fool.

  22. You shouldn’t listen to leftist lies, and you certainly shouldn’t peddle them yourself. It’s bad for your mental health.

  23. What “leftist lies” are he repeating? I’m as conservative as anyone and I agree 100 percent with him.

  24. Why is it that people who use pot become progressively, and noticeably, more stupid? Why is it that *I’m* supposed to pretend not to know that?

Why is it that *I’m* supposed to pretend to not know that decriminalizing pot will mean even more self-enstupidated people whose upkeep will be paid for by confiscating *my* income?
