Amanda Marcotte: College Kids Are ‘Under Assault From Reactionary Forces’

The notorious madcap feminist offers an interesting — and by “interesting,” of course, I mean deranged — defense of the protesting student mob at the University of Missouri:

Young people are under assault from reactionary forces and most of their grievances are not about imagined slights, but about very serious problems they are facing, on and off campus. . . .
[T]he revolt against Wolfe didn’t come out of nowhere. The accusations that Wolfe was indifferent to a handful of racist incidents on campus are only the tip of the iceberg. It appears that, for months now, the campus has been the staging ground for all manner of conservative attacks on the wellbeing of young people not just on campus, but across the state.

Marcotte asserts that “young people — particularly young women and people of color” are being “victimized” by, inter alia, the university’s decision (later reversed) to end health-insurance subsidies for graduate students and the cancellation of the university’s contracts with Planned Parenthood:

The school was listening to and willing to interfere with the health care and educational access the students had, to pander to the whims of a bunch of delusional culture warriors.
While all this is happening, black students on campus are reporting a series of racist incidents. Campus protests were invigorated by the protests against police brutality in nearby Ferguson, but it also appears that all this tumult is invigorating racists, too, who are getting increasingly confrontational and provocative.

Is this true? Are there “racists” at the University of Missouri who are “increasingly confrontational and provocative”? Does Amanda Marcotte, or anyone else, have a list of these racists? Can she name even one of them? And what about this “series of racist incidents” Marcotte describes — has anyone been prosecuted? Are police investigating? Have the federal Department of Education or the Department of Justice raised any concerns about the racist climate on the Columbia, Mo., campus that Marcotte blames on “reactionary forces”? Where is the evidence for Marcotte’s claim that “tumult is invigorating racists” at the University of Missouri? Sean Davis at the Federalist is deeply skeptical:

A reported incident of vandalism at Mizzou sparked university-wide protests, a boycott by the school’s 4-5 football team, and eventually the resignation of the university’s president and chancellor.
There’s only one problem: no evidence of the alleged incident, in which a poop swastika on the wall of a dormitory restroom was reported, has ever been made publicly available. Did this incident occur as reported, or was it an immaculate defecation that formed the foundation of an unimaginable deception?
According to Billy Donley, the president of Mizzou’s Residence Halls Association (RHA), the poop swastika was reported at approximately 2:00 a.m. on October 24, 2015.
“On Saturday, October 24th, at 2:00am an individual came into one of the restrooms in Gateway Hall and drew a swastika on the wall with their own feces,” Donley wrote in a letter several days after the alleged incident. “This event happened while many students, including myself, were already asleep.”
Later in his letter, Donley noted that he only found out about the alleged vandalism incident “via a flyer posted on the walls” of the dorm.

This allegation — smeared feces used to make Nazi graffiti in a dorm bathroom at 2 a.m. — is certainly remarkable and by “remarkable,” of course, I mean, preposterous. Sean Davis was unable to find anyone at the University of Missouri who even claims to have seen this fecal graffiti, and what kind of evidence do we have that it actually happened?

When asked if there was any photographic evidence of the alleged incident, one [university] staffer replied, “Not to my knowledge.” . . .
Multiple activists on Twitter pointed to this photo as proof that the incident occurred as reported, but a Google search for the same image shows that it has been floating around the Internet for nearly a year. A reddit thread from November of 2014 appears to contain the earliest publication of the photo in question, meaning that it most certainly does not constitute proof of the incident alleged to have occurred at Mizzou on October 24, 2015.
Maj. Brian Weimer, the public information officer for the Mizzou police department, told The Federalist that he also did not personally see the poop swastika that was reported to police. When asked if anyone in the police department personally witnessed the swastika, Maj. Weimer clammed up and referred all questions about the incident to the university’s custodian of public records.

This is not a trivial matter. As Sean Davis points out, campus “hate” incidents are frequently revealed to be hoaxes, and if such a hoax helped incite protests that led to the resignation of university officials, taxpayers in Missouri have a right to know why the university police investigation was inadequate. The dubious circumstances surrounding this incident suggest that University of Missouri students may have succumbed to paranoia, believing they are “under assault from reactionary forces” that exist mainly in their own fervid imaginations.

  1. As if we needed more proof that this case is ripe with deliberate public agitation, deceit and intellectual dishonesty the Marcotte piece definitely tips the scales. She’s continuing the traditions of the Marquis de Sade and Wilhelm Reich–depraved individuals who first choose rationalization over repentance and then attempt to agitate the mob into joining them and normalizing the sexual revolution (at least for a time, societies tend to get a massive hangover from the Dionysian intoxication)

FYI-Jim Hoft has a piece on Jonathan Butler, the “oppressed” Mizzou hunger striker and his #RailBarronPrivilege

When I wrote my article on the resignation of wimp President Tim Wolfe — and yes, that’s a shameless blog plug, and you should go and read it, now! — I did something really radical like look up just how “nearby” Ferguson was to Columbia. It turns out that it’s a 1 hour, 47 minute drive down Interstate 70, 116 miles, something a serious writer like Miss Marcotte should have looked up herself.

  3. I agree it’s not trivial. The fact the black basketball team never came out with a statement and the football team did points to collusion among a few individuals, not an initial campus-wide reaction to racism. It’s a lot easier to get 3 or 4 guys together and launch a hoax and sow seeds of discontent among the black football players than it is for me to believe there was a simultaneous upwelling of awareness across the entire black campus. If it ever comes out there was a plot to blackmail/extort the U it could get very interesting. In any event, were I a student I’d buy a BYU shirt and wear it every single day.

First of all, one wonders how a college student cannot understand that the possessive pronoun for an individual is not a plural, or that “(his) own feces” is redundant. Second, if the individual is unidentified, how can Mr Donley know that it was his feces, as opposed to someone else’s?

And, quite frankly, if someone is willing to pick up his own poop, I guess that he deserves some credit here. 🙂

  5. The left knows they have a problem with these kids, and Marcotte’s article is one in a series trying to push back on attacks against these hyper-sensitive, “Children of the Revolution”. I’ve seen similar articles from Slate, The Atlantic, and I’m sure Salon will run one soon.

  6. Never forget that Amanda Marcotte was a paid blogger for the John Edwards presidential campaign in 2004 until she was fired for being crazy and too extreme.

  7. Not really. She had a staff job of some sort at the University of Texas at Austin for about 8 years. She started blogging avocationally around about 2004 and then has been writing professionally since 2007. Her boy toy is employed as an IT tech at an abortion mill.

She has a BA from a rank-and-file private college; she’s no more extensively educated than 10s of millions of others. She’s on the cusp of middle-age with no children (and professing to despise them). Her writing is nothing sort of atrocious. She’s a waste and turns up the volume to 11 to drown out the still, small voice telling her she’s a waste.

  8. What was astonishing at the time is that it took Edwards as long as it did to give her a pink slip. ‘Ere he did, she madly scrubbed her posts at the Pandagon blog to no avail. I’d never heard of her until around that time when she came into the crosshairs of Prof. KC Johnson. Prof. Johnson

is a partisan Democrat, but he’s got a certain old-school professionalism about him that’s aghast at some of the discourse within academe and the Democratic Party. He noticed Marcotte when she wrote some vitriolic commentary on the Duke rape case which revealed she did not know the first thing about the case. She was duly taken out, bagged, and stuffed.

  9. BTW, the “outrage” regarding Planned Parenthood concerned an office it maintained on campus. There was and is still a PP office in Columbia about 8-9 blocks north of the Main UM campus.

As for graduate assistant health insurance, the university’s conduct was incentivized by the Affordable Care Act, about which Marcottte was doing cartwheels a few years back. Part of that law requires insurance carries to cover children until age 26. (When I was a grad assistant, we used the student health center for routine stuff and I had a catastrophic policy for chump change in case I got hit by a bus. I was making $600 per month and still had money to burn. Suffice it to say, things have changed greatly since the ’80s.)

  10. Another “Stitch in time saving nine” moment. is upon us. If we had recognized it as such and dealt promptly and firmly with Eric Holder, when he and his radical student accomplices seized the administration buildings at Columbia University or dealt appropriately forcefully with Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn after their bank robberies, bombings and murders of policemen we likely wouldn’t be dealing with the likes of Hussein Obama and his seven year long wholly unconstitutional presidency.
    Once burned twice shy.
“Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice shame on me.”
This may be our last chance to step up and save the Republic

  11. I believe that it could have happened. But, if it did, why should the left believe the poopstika was aimed at black students; the more traditional target would be Jooooos, and the left hate them.

  12. 2008, not 2004.

However, what she was resigned for was former Senator Edwards total inattentiveness; it took conservatives about 4¼ minutes after her hiring was announced to dig up the offensive stuff she had written and point it out. One would have thought that as thorough and diligent an ambulance chaser attorney as Mr Edwards was, he’d have checked up on that stuff before he hired her.

  13. The esteemed Mr Edwards hired Melissa McEwan at the same time, another potty-mouthed bloggess with a rather extensive history of published stupidity. Neither Miss Marcotte nor Mrs McEwan had ever published three articles in a row without the word f(ornicate) or s(tool) in them, so it shouldn’t have been hard to guess that maybe, just maybe, a more thorough look at what they had previously written was in order.

When Mr Edwards hired these two young ladies, my first thought was, “What was he thinking?”

  14. “99% of racist incidents are hoaxes perpetrated by the victim who is desperate for attention and cheap sympathy. There was a ‘racist incident’ on campus.”
“Let’s assume, without evidence, that this is one of the 1% and go with that. Also, let’s teach our students to thinks like dumbasses like we do.”

  15. “on and off campus”
So Wolfe was an unjustly attacked victim of a lynch mob without cause. Can we just say that? Unjustly attacked victim.

  16. I believe it could have happened, but I also believe that it’s just as likely it was performed by the person who lodged the complaint.

  17. What bothers me most about this is that, had the alleged fecal swastika been on a sheet of canvas instead of a bathroom wall, the same people who are shrieking in outrage would have hailed it as brave and transgressive artwork. Heck, the “artist” would have gotten a MacArthur Genius Grant, the Turner Prize and a solo show at the Guggenheim. It would have been labeled something like “Brownshi(r)t” and would take the art world by storm.

  18. You never know when you might suddenly wake up eight months pregnant and need an emergency abortion when 8 blocks is too far to walk. I can’t even tell you how many times that’s happened to me. So awkward.

  19. One of Stacy’s better two liners:

Q: How do you best demonstrate Amanda Marcotte to be a blithering idiot?

    A: Quote her.

  20. “Less noted in the news coverage is that an August posting on the website of the university’s division of graduate studies explains in detail that the health-insurance cutbacks are the explicit result of the Affordable Care Act. ObamaCare’s regulations forbid employers, such as universities, from paying for their grad students’ health insurance. Another case of progressives eating their own.”

Apparently those in the “reality based community”, i.e. AmanDuh never, ever would read the WSJ to find out the truth.

  21. Or maybe like Piero Manzoni he could have canned his work and gotten it into the Tate. His father, who owned a cannery allegedly told Piero his art was shit, so I guess he took those words seriously.

Not kidding about the Tate Museum either, see link
    http://www.tate.org.uk/art/artworks/manzoni-artists-shit-t07667

According to Wiki Manzoni’s Artist’s Shit “On October 16, 2015, tin 54 was sold at Christies for the astonishing sum of £182,500.”
    tate.org.uk/art/images/work/T/T07/T07667_9.jpg

Gives a whole new meaning to the expression “shitcanned”

  22. Marcotte’s a member of America’s newest version of the KKK: Third Wave Feminism. Orwell’s lesson in 1984 was that such a thing would sneak into our blindspot. Beware of Nazis in pigtails bearing wheel chair access and talk of allergies to scented products.

  23. Marcotte is a poop swastika. She’s just too stupid to understand the word “defamation” isn’t a trademarked feature of GLAAD and the ADL but a principle. In other words she doesn’t understand how law works. Why then be surprised at the words that come out of her mouth?

  24. They are under attack from reactionary forces. These days, the reactionaries are all leftists. insane leftists at that.

  25. Since my son lives in the KC area, I’ve been on that stretch of road between Ferguson and Columbia many times. They aren’t near each other. But, leftists are among the most provincial people alive. The only way you will meet people worse in that department is to go into the most remote reaches of Amazonia.

  26. Hey now…people wanting wheelchair access have been berry good to me.

I do ADA work for a major corporation that has been sued because of access issues.

They are on the forefront of this issue. Other major corporations to follow soon.

  27. Woah, wait.
    Miss Marcott… at Salon?
    Whoda’ thunk it.
I can’t WAIT to read her account of her alien love child with Sean Penn, in the check out line racks.
