Feminist Tumblr Syndrome

Kylo Ren is the name of the villain in the latest Star Wars movie. You may wonder, “What does that have to do with feminism?” Honestly, I don’t know, but Lis is a feminist Tumblr blogger:

I’m a 20 year old dfab white demigirl living in the United States with my parents. Currently, I’m in college and am looking for a job. I enjoy a lot of things and have a lot of friends, and talk a lot about video games and am very opinionated. I’m bisexual, and living in a very hostile environment for a person such as myself so I use tumblr as an outlet for various frustrations I feel because of that.

Got that? OK, so now you may be ready for this from Lis:

Kylo Ren, cishet white male, 30. I hope I offend you. Try and argue with me, your ignorant anger is the reason I get up in the morning. Triggered yet?

It is perhaps necessary, for readers not familiar with Third Wave feminist jargon, for me to explain that “dfab” means designated female at birth — biologically, she’s female — and “demigirl” is “a gender identity describing someone who partially, but not wholly, identifies as” female. Whenever I encounter bizarre jargon terms like this (which are very common in Feminist Tumblr) my first impulse is alway to wonder, “Has she consulted an endocrinologist?”

This is not merely sarcasm. Because I intend to include a chapter on Feminist Tumblr in the second edition of Sex Trouble, I’ve plowed through enough of these blog profiles that various patterns and clusters of symptoms have become apparent to me. “Feminist Tumblr Syndrome” typically involves a combination of mental illness and abnormal sexuality. There may be feminists who are both (a) sane and (b) heterosexual, but none of those women are running Tumblr blogs.

These women are a non-random set — there is a pattern, as I say — and in many cases, the Feminist Tumblr blogger will describe herself in ways that seem symptomatic of endocrine disorders. I find myself wondering, “Has your doctor checked your thyroid function? Do you have any problems with your metabolism? What about your hormone levels? Is there some kind of underlying gynecological problem? An undetected cyst somewhere? Could you maybe ask the doctor to run an MRI?”

It is difficult to believe that an entirely healthy 20-year-old would be spending all her time on Tumblr, describing herself as a bisexual “dfab white demigirl,” claiming she is the victim of a “hostile environment” and ranting about Star Wars characters.

Crazy is as crazy does, I guess, and the fact that I consider these weirdos on Feminist Tumblr to be a subject for journalistic research may not say much for my own mental health. Yet if “the personal is political,” as Carol Hanisch says, we cannot understand feminism without examining the demography of the movement’s rank-and-file, and in the 21st century, one way to do this is by examining the movement’s online presence in free-for-all venues like Tumblr. And let me point out something you may not have noticed: Lis’s denunciation of Kylo Ren (which got nearly 12,000 notes on Tumblr) labeled him a “cishet white male.”

OK, what is “cishet”? This jargon term combines the prefix cis– (which is the opposite of trans-) and “het” which is short for heterosexual, so that “cishet” just means a man who is sexually and biologically normal, and Feminist Tumblr demonizes “cishet white males” as the Worst Thing Any Human Could Possibly Be.

Young feminists evidently believe it is wrong to be male, wrong to be white, and wrong to be heterosexual. The rhetoric of the feminist movement, day in and day out, looks very much like hate propaganda against anyone who fits the category of “cishet white males,” and yet nobody ever seems to question this type of categorical hatred.

To understand this hatred, perhaps it might help to take a look at the feminist “humor” of The White Dad Magazine.

Once we understand feminism as organized irrationality — the political mobilization of mentally ill women — we can recognize their rhetoric as symptoms and their ideology as a disease.

    Maybe you should hold back on that. You could easily write an entire book – actually, really easily for you – on the topic of Feminist Tumblr, and I’m dead serious when I say that the sheer freakishness of the material could push it way up the Amazon sales chart. It’s like a bizarre “reality” show. A slow-mo train wreck you can’t take your eyes off of.

  5. The video addresses the “intersectionality” of CM and feminism. If it was just another long academic rant against CM I wouldn’t have bothered posting it here. It takes a decent amount of effort to address this in 7 min, they did a decent job IMHO

    In the public venue liberals (er,now “progressives”) scold us that we must avoid labels and treat people the same and that being gay/straight must not matter. In fact #BakeTheCake because strict equality.

    in the private among-ourselves venue, progressives make ever finer differentiation based on delineations that have ideological implications. The first criteria for relating to strangers is which classes they fit into. Only when that is resolved can the ideology underlying any relationship be determined. Ideology first and always you know.

    In the latter case this is a two edged sword for progressives. It is either a tool to signal being part of the in-group. It is also a way to denigrate and push back status that is ideologically opposed.

    And then we have the component of race being used as a proxy for ideology. “black” and “of-color” is the proxy for being progressive. “white” is the proxy for conservative and post-WASP culture, which most be destroyed. Thus, anyone who practices diligence, hard work, good character values is a H8R who must be marginalized. Should such a person be reaping rewards from their life’s work and diligence, they are evil.

    So, “cishet white male” is about as evil and H8ful person as could be found in a free society.

    In the early 80s, as an intelligent, articulate professional woman, I was approached by NOW regarding backing me in a run for political office. When they discovered my attitudes about certain topics (traditional family: for it, men: loved ’em, willingness to lie to advance an agenda: no way), they dropped me like a hot potato, and were very vicious and aggressive in their opposition to me.

    You can read the works of early feminists where they clearly state in as many words not only their opposition to the traditional family, but also their desire to ruthlessly control and/or marginalize anyone who disagreed with them. Such was the nature of the early feminist movement, and it’s the same narrative still today.

  11. That’s not true at all. When the men went to war and (unintentionally ) left their women behind, women had to learn to be self sufficient. Women had to learn to support their children, repair what was broken, and continue on with life. The real feminist movement happened because women wanted to be treated fairly in the eyes of law and equally in the home instead of as a subservient posession with no voice and no rights. If that is your idea of destroying family values then I suggest you look at what family values really are. Family values is being respectful to your partner, raising your children to be productive and respectful, and holding family higher than other institutions. How exactly is a woman’s fight for equal treatment and opportunity destroying family values? Im certain you’re confusing the lack of morality in hijacked feminism with true feminism.

  12. That is not true feminism. True feminism is fighting for equal rights. Hijacked feminism is a fight against morality and tradition. True feminists embrace their role as women but know that we deserve equal treatment. Liberals destroy family values, not traditional feminism.

  15. Seems to me that men deserve equal rights as well. But I’m not really seeing women being treated unequally these days. I more often see white men treated badly. This concerns me, as I believe that everyone, regardless of sex, ethnicity or religion should be paid similarly according to their position, experience and ability.

    Plus, I can tell you from my own personal statistical analysis as a Data Scientist that, when controlling for experience, education, training, job duties, etc., that in a corporate setting, unequal pay for women is a complete and total fallacy. If anything, women are unfairly paid more.

    The only places you see women unfairly paid these days are in Democrat/Socialist settings, such as Democrat Congressional and Senate offices, community organizing groups, etc.

  16. That’s not due to feminism. Thats due to the liberal ideology of feminism which says essentially that women rule the world. True feminism is not fighting our roles but embracing them while expecting equal treatment. Todays feminists are dumb.

  17. Women are unfairly paid more in corporate settings. I completely agree. The goal of true feminism was different but equal. We all deserve equal treatment regardless of gender or race. Unfortunately unequal pay for women is still a problem in the lower wage sector. Not everyone has degrees and corporate jobs. I see it all the time and sexism still exists as well. Sexism being unequal treatment, not this liberal ideology of freeing nipples and other ignorance. Its like modern day hijacked feminism is creating a situation of inequality by emasculating men. Thats not right either. We are all equal but we are indeed different.

  18. I would suggest perusing the Sex Trouble series mentioned in the post. RSM has actually read the foundational documents underlying the feminist movement and cites chapter and verse supporting his conclusions from feminists’ own mouths. If this were really a matter of treating all people equally in the eyes of the law, the war was won a long time ago. Pack up the tents and go home.

    Alas, however, Feminism as it once may have been on the margins did not have its Cincinnatus to walk away. Instead, Feminism went back to its roots in Leftist/Progressive/Marxist dogma regarding destruction of Marriage and the Family. And so, we sit here today watching the train wreck which is Feminist Tumblr.

  21. My point this entire time is exactly as you summed up in the bottom of your comment. Hijacking feminism and inserting liberal ideology does not make it feminism. It makes it a hijacked cause. The problem is liberalism and Marxism, not the equal treatment of women.
    The liberal ideology is that women should be compensated irrationally for years of so called oppression. I do not agree with emasculating men or gender neutrality. I fight for women’s rights to be equal, not to be better. We are different, but we are equal. Women can do things that men cannot and men can do things that we cannot. I, and others who are real feminists embrace our roles as women. Liberal hijacking feminists want to destroy and become men. 😉 Their fight is about destruction of the male, not equality. There is a difference.

  22. I believe Ren’s a fictional character, In any event, his sexual orientation didn’t seem to be part of the movie. But, as his destruction of Order equipment attests, he can be triggered.

    That last bit would at least get you an UCMJ Article 15, and likely an Article 108 and 134 to boot. In the real world.

  24. I feel badly that you have the opinion of feminism that you do because of an ignorant ideology that has taken root in our society. Do you have daughters? Do you not want your daughters to be afforded the same opportunities as males? That is feminism in its true form.   29. I’ll tell you what it has to do with feminism. There’s another “safe space” for the paranoia the gender bent have for men and that’s the daily informal round-robins which take place among the science fiction community’s woman writers, editors and bloggers on Twitter. In fact that entire core community is a safe space for a literature that is now what you might expect of a thing powered by Third Wave Feminism: a literature the Nazis might have had if they’d hated straight white males. I’m not sure why anyone thinks science fiction can be defined by attacking straight white men but it’s self-evident they now do.

    The author who wrote the new Star Wars tie-in novel is named Chuck Wendig. He is well-known in that community for kissing feminist ass whenever possible. He personally lobbied Disney to allow him to write in gay characters, because of course he did. For those of you who only know of old school SF from old TV shows, this is not your dad’s genre where writers told principled morality parables to defend things like due process, free speech and equal protection. Today this is a supremacist literature of racial-sexual revenge fantasies and anyone who partakes is rewarded with award nominations and generally promoted. Anyone who does not partake or actively opposes TWF become invisible or pariahs. It is nothing more than a politicized affirmative action movement committed to racial/gender diversity based on the theory straight white male actively oppose the entrance of women, gays and non-whites but is most of all dedicated to lesbian/intersectional theory.

    For reasons no one knows, the cult of the “feminist” WisCon SF convention which started back in 1977 has come to dominate the old core of SFF. That means the Nebula and Hugo Awards. One of the once most respected magazines called the Magazine of Fantasy and SF started in 1949 is now edited by a guy named C.C. Finlay. You have to read his non-fiction remarks to see how this guy sucks up to feminism. His review of an X-men movie is a classic of bowing and scraping. That magazine started off with a print run of 70,000. 65 years later in a country twice as large it has 1/3 the circulation.

  30. I honestly wish people would stop pushing this “cultural Marxism” thing. For example, when you look at a thing I am familiar with, the now depraved PC science fiction community, there are no “CM” foundational texts anyone refers to. No one lists a CM author as an inspiration. You can’t identify a single person there as CM and no one self-identifies as CM.

    You can’t have a movement without an agitprop clergy to keep the fires burning. The idea CM is now so generic and mainstreamed as to be invisible is stupid. That’s like saying aliens are clever at hiding cuz I never see them.

    As far as I can tell, CM means anything people don’t like. It could be Jasper Johns or flash poetry or sex in film. It all goes in the same hopper but without any underlying ideology which powers it.

Also, I’m to believe some informal think tank arrived from Germany to Columbia U, spent 15 years here, went back, and somehow overthrew the culture of America. Lauren Bacall came out around the same time. I could argue she had more influence.

  32. You’re making it seem more than it was. The writings of 6 mentally ill women were rooted in hate and paranoia. They reverse-engineered that with fake post-structuralist bullshit until they got the results they wante from Lacan, Levi-Strauss, Foucault and Derrida. The roots of its success lie in falsely piggy-backing it on real feminism and the anti-Jim Crow movement. Third Wave Feminists basically believe they still live in such a time and have dedicated their rhetoric to transforming all of history to match a giant Jim Crow county where women have no rights.

  33. I think the sarcastic point they’re making is that if there were a men’s equivalent to Third Wave Feminism one could make up weird theories to suit any antipathy towards women. I could maintain women have conspired to stay out of the military draft since the Civil War. When you put it like that, the idea all women act in the sense of a tacit conspiracy show how mental gay feminist theory is. Who created heterosexuality and maintained the incest taboo across 5 continents and all of human history? That’s one big address book of secret handshakes.

  36. The sexual revolution was not just a womans movement. Furthermore, i dont see where men were complaining during the 60s and 70s when morality took a nose dive for the young generation. Again though, the whole “free love” era was ushered in by liberal idealists. Truly a moral low point in our nation’s history which we never recovered from.
    As far as your grand daughter: That’s wonderful! I am truly happy for your family. And I’m not quite as young as i may look. I have an adult child myself.

  39. Thank you. Not all of us are the same. Some of us actually believe in personal accountability and earning your way. Ive worked in a predominantly male industry since my early twenties. It wasn’t easy but i did it. I earned my place. Now I am a trusted voice in the automotive industry. This emasculating, tits out, angry because their dads didn’t buy them a pony girls really need to find a different cause and let the big girls who respect themselves and earn our place handle women’s rights issues. 😉

    Milo is a rare fellow: gay as a lemonade sandwich, but intensely conservative and willing to speak out. Guess Twitter got tired of the heat he was generating.

Sounds like someone got burned… Just as we are not supposed to view all men as bottom feeding, commitment-phobic, archaic viewed, troglodytes, It would be completely unfair to lump all feminists into the category of your ex. As I have proven already, there are some of us with empathy, compassion, morals, and a sense of humor (as sarcastic as it may be).
