Feminist Tumblr Syndrome

Kylo Ren is the name of the villain in the latest Star Wars movie. You may wonder, “What does that have to do with feminism?” Honestly, I don’t know, but Lis is a feminist Tumblr blogger:

I’m a 20 year old dfab white demigirl living in the United States with my parents. Currently, I’m in college and am looking for a job. I enjoy a lot of things and have a lot of friends, and talk a lot about video games and am very opinionated. I’m bisexual, and living in a very hostile environment for a person such as myself so I use tumblr as an outlet for various frustrations I feel because of that.

Got that? OK, so now you may be ready for this from Lis:

Kylo Ren, cishet white male, 30. I hope I offend you. Try and argue with me, your ignorant anger is the reason I get up in the morning. Triggered yet?

It is perhaps necessary, for readers not familiar with Third Wave feminist jargon, for me to explain that “dfab” means designated female at birth — biologically, she’s female — and “demigirl” is “a gender identity describing someone who partially, but not wholly, identifies as” female. Whenever I encounter bizarre jargon terms like this (which are very common in Feminist Tumblr) my first impulse is alway to wonder, “Has she consulted an endocrinologist?”

This is not merely sarcasm. Because I intend to include a chapter on Feminist Tumblr in the second edition of Sex Trouble, I’ve plowed through enough of these blog profiles that various patterns and clusters of symptoms have become apparent to me. “Feminist Tumblr Syndrome” typically involves a combination of mental illness and abnormal sexuality. There may be feminists who are both (a) sane and (b) heterosexual, but none of those women are running Tumblr blogs.

These women are a non-random set — there is a pattern, as I say — and in many cases, the Feminist Tumblr blogger will describe herself in ways that seem symptomatic of endocrine disorders. I find myself wondering, “Has your doctor checked your thyroid function? Do you have any problems with your metabolism? What about your hormone levels? Is there some kind of underlying gynecological problem? An undetected cyst somewhere? Could you maybe ask the doctor to run an MRI?”

It is difficult to believe that an entirely healthy 20-year-old would be spending all her time on Tumblr, describing herself as a bisexual “dfab white demigirl,” claiming she is the victim of a “hostile environment” and ranting about Star Wars characters.

Crazy is as crazy does, I guess, and the fact that I consider these weirdos on Feminist Tumblr to be a subject for journalistic research may not say much for my own mental health. Yet if “the personal is political,” as Carol Hanisch says, we cannot understand feminism without examining the demography of the movement’s rank-and-file, and in the 21st century, one way to do this is by examining the movement’s online presence in free-for-all venues like Tumblr. And let me point out something you may not have noticed: Lis’s denunciation of Kylo Ren (which got nearly 12,000 notes on Tumblr) labeled him a “cishet white male.”

OK, what is “cishet”? This jargon term combines the prefix cis– (which is the opposite of trans-) and “het” which is short for heterosexual, so that “cishet” just means a man who is sexually and biologically normal, and Feminist Tumblr demonizes “cishet white males” as the Worst Thing Any Human Could Possibly Be.

Young feminists evidently believe it is wrong to be male, wrong to be white, and wrong to be heterosexual. The rhetoric of the feminist movement, day in and day out, looks very much like hate propaganda against anyone who fits the category of “cishet white males,” and yet nobody ever seems to question this type of categorical hatred.

To understand this hatred, perhaps it might help to take a look at the feminist “humor” of The White Dad Magazine.

Once we understand feminism as organized irrationality — the political mobilization of mentally ill women — we can recognize their rhetoric as symptoms and their ideology as a disease.

  1. Did you mean equal economic opportunity? Cuz economic equality wouldn’t be equality – that would be affirmative action quotas.

  2. It is not liberal ideology. It is lesbian supremacism. Over 90% of all modern gender feminist foundational texts were written by lesbians.

  3. No one is my lobbying arm. I dont agree with emasculating nor do i agree with women playing with the lives of their children. I also dont believe men have a right to do that either which i see far too often. So, how about instead of directing me on how to handle my feminism, you start telling your guys to keep it in their pants till they find a real woman worth their ring instead of banging everything with a heartbeat and maybe we can come to an agreement with the lobbyists? …

  4. Virtually all foundational texts of the “feminism” we are seeing were written by lesbians. Sisterhood is Powerful (1970) Robin Morgan, Ed., Sexual Politics (1970) Kate Millet, The Dialectics of Sex (1970) Shulamith Firestone, Woman Hating (1974) Andrea Dworkin, “The Traffic in Sex” (1975) Gayle Rubin, “The Master’s Tools Will Never Dismantle the Master’s House” (1979) Audre Lorde, “Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbianism” (1980) Adrienne Rich, Gender Trouble (1990) Judith Butler

The sole exception is Against Our Will (1975) Susan Brownmiller, and if you want to throw in the beginning of the “Third Wave’s “intersectionality,” “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack” (1988) Peggy McIntosh. However white privilege was mentioned in the earliest writings of gay feminism by lesbians like Charlotte Bunch and Audre Lorde. It’s just that McIntosh’s essay is the most cited as gathering the strands into a concrete set of examples.

  5. If you’re a feminist NOW is your lobbying arm.

This is a country where young boys molested by adult female pedophiles have to pay child support to their abusers if those predators become pregnant and give birth.

How about you tell your highly privileged feminist sisters to keep their legs crossed instead of using their cooters as cash machines?

  6. Guess that goes both ways doesn’t it? Both sides are equally as guilty for the child support issue. Ive never used mine as a cash machine but the concept of an atm doesn’t sound too bad… In any event, since i am not one of the liberal fucktard feminists, no, they are not my lobby. Sorry, im not one of the highly privileged sisters either. I actually have a job and make my own way. I will tell you however; if at some point you are serious about enacting those changes, you’d probably get further if you didn’t come across so hostile and angry at women in general. Fyi: we aren’t all the same, just as men claim they aren’t.

  7. I’ve been surrounded by women my entire adult married life…3 daughters, 6 granddaughters and only 1 grandson…even the dog’s a bitch. ( That’s a joke perpetrated by my wife, by the way.)

  8. Well, I’m not a lesbian so,,, sorry to disappoint. And for like the 500th time today,,, modern feminism is stupid. They have no idea what its like to be discriminated against because of gender.

  9. And didn’t Susan Brownmiller get largely drummed out of *The Movement* when she was gauche enough to point out the demographic disparities of rapists’ identities?

  10. Feminism has been hijacked by people with weird notions of sex and gender. That is mostly due to the “Women’s studies” programs at the universities. The more off the wall the concept, the more they like it.

  11. My Dad died young, so it was me and my brother against my mother and three sisters.

All my razors got used on leg hair.

    ’nuff said.

  12. If you reject, then start your own thing.

Reformation is completely out of the picture. Time for your own SCHOOL!

    (THIS IS WAR!!!!!)

  13. I want to respond to you, but then I have the image of Gorbachev gazing down at me and saying “I come to share vodka, and find you rolling in the gutter with local oaf….”

  14. No, I’m not saying that is fair at all. I personally think all pedophiles should be publicly executed.

  15. As I set here practicing field-stripping my new 9mm, I found your definition of “cishet” and finally understand. I had no bloody idea that “cishet” means NORMAL. I thought maybe it was a particular type of bipedal mammal with an abnormal growth, but that would have been “cysthet” or something.

And don’t worry, the 9mm is for my cishet wife and daughters. Real men carry .45 caliber (11.5mm) pistols. But I have to get familiar with this one to train the ladies.

Man, I learn so much reading RSM. The sad part is reading about crazy, confused women, er, womyn isn’t all that edifying….

  16. Sadly, it is the true feminism. Unfortunately for you, you drank the kool aid and think that the dictionary definition of feminism is what feminism is all about.
But most of us judge feminism by the actions of feminists and the outcomes of their political influence, not the definition laid down in writing.

  17. No kool-aid for me. Sorry to disappoint. I actually believe in what my mother and grandmothers fought for. Hijacking a cause and inducing progressive bullshit does not change who wins the game. It only changes how its played. These dumbass college age progressives are not advocating equality. They are actually pushing superiority and segregation. So again, not really what feminism is about.

  18. Calm down, folks, no one is a moron here. Wombat bans the leftist moron hyenas that track mud in all over the carpet.

  19. Well, what do you mean by absolute, universal and immutable? Always the same bad guys, meaning whites, men, heterosexuals, Christians, the West?

  20. I do my homework. You do not need the Frankfurt school to be a mentally ill radical lesbian who fears men.

  21. That’s the usual suspects’ lineup, isn’t it? As for the three specific terms:
Absolute: Manichean-grade black-and-white views of the respective players in a political situation
Universal: No exceptions. Everyone is playing on either the *Part of the Problem* or the *Part of the Solution* team.
Immutable: Roles are frozen. No matter how much wealth, power, influence, visibility, and/or respect a Victim group obtains, it and its members can NEVER become an Oppressors.

  22. Sorry bud. That’s just too universal for me to attach it to a specific ideology. Our own Constitution dealt with such issues long before Marx. And the concept of “inalienable rights” is based on you’re either on board or not. It is not a thing subject to debate. Is that black and white?

  23. I think we’re arguing past each other. To inject a bit more nuance: I think that Marx’ theory of the Ruling and Oppressed Classes, as applied to the control of capital, was a perversion of concepts that originated in the Classical Liberal tradition that informed the Constitution, and was so murderously misused in the French Revolution. Marx and Lenin’s own thinking, in turn, has been grotesquely misapplied by SJW-types to *all conceivable interactions* between *all conceivable types of groups or individuals*, to create the victim/victimizer narrative that undergirds pretty much of all postmodern Leftist rhetoric.
We’re on the same side here, my friend. Let’s not misunderstand each other.

  24. Perhaps the distinction you and @NeoWayland are trying to draw is what one writer called the difference between “Equity Feminism” and “Gender Feminism.” The former was the Feminism of Susan B. Anthony, Victoria Woodhull, Rosie the Riveter and the liberal fellow-travelers of the Second Wave: demands for equal rights; fair treatment; and plain respect. The latter is the sort of feminism our host has been researching, and is the product of mental illness, chauvinistic identity-politics, Marxist-primitivist zero-sum economics, and politically-weaponized psychological therapeutism.

  25. But you do need Frankfurt to give your paranoid mental illness theoretical weight and academic legitimacy. Of course, the bar has been so lowered in academic discourse, that such weight and legitimacy are a miserable joke.

  26. God gifts us with the Holy Spirit so that we may understand the Scripture and all things spiritual. Satan must surely gift these women with insanity so that they may understand all things feminist.

  27. The problem is we have so many real people with real quotes doing real things I just don’t see the point in dropping bombs in a sideshow no one even agrees on in terms of what it is.

What’s happening is what McCain has been trying to educate people about: a very specific cult with very specific goals who are mainstreaming their divisive hatred as some kind of phony morality tales. Meanwhile, the humanitarian mid-century American culture which actually did preach morality tales in literature, film and TV has been thrown to the wolves as racists and sexists by mentally ill radical lesbians.

  28. No you don’t need Frankfurt. The reason this cult’s bible of rules is called French Queer Theory is because of French intellectuals cherry-picked to give that weight you talk about. Read their foundational texts; it’s Lacan, Levi-Strauss, Foucault and Derrida. It’s phony anthropology to “prove” heterosexuality is fake backed up with linguistic “cures.” Those are very specific people taught in today’s gender studies classes one can talk about, quote and tear apart.

  29. In my gutter I can debate the post-structuralist metaphor and double entendre “before the law.” Can you?

  30. I just realized that I have begun rolling around in the gutter with a local oaf. And Gorbachev is laughing.

    Color me gone.

  31. At that point I am mostly punchy and bitey.

Which generally gets me before the law.

Which, in Georgia, is pretty much in my favor.

  32. I can’t speak for Kerry Anne Davenport Dalton, but yes.

That, and in my experience, the Second Wave type is more interested in getting the job done and making their piece of the world a better place. The Third Wave wants spectacle, perpetual victimhood, and the extra-special privileges they get after throwing their tantrums.
