“You were right,” said Eddy in the playfully defeated tone they’d enjoyed for decades.
Mary reached through his arm to touch his hand as he turned to kiss her forehead.
They stood at the rail to view the high school track where their grand-daughter had just set a school record in the 100 yard dash.
“You were always so skeptical of her mother and her parenting,” chided Mary.
He laughed with joy to himself, the way a good husband does when agreeing with his wife, while being quite confident that a jury of their peers would’ve come to the opposite conclusion.

“We will manage. We always do.” He said it quietly as they stood outside the clinic. “My bad hip. Your failing kidneys. My bad ticker. Your bad eyes. My cancer. Your cancer.”

“I will not be a burden to you.” She closed her eyes to stop the tears.

“You could never be a burden. We will manage. Look, I hold your hand and you still excite me.”

“John! Not in front of all these people!” She leaned into him.

“Let them look.” He kissed her. “We will manage. We always do.”

It’s good practice. My writing can always stand some work with a hedge trimmer…

No plot and a missing premise. Nor do they quite make it as a “slice of life.” More like a shaving.

Sometimes there’s hits & misses. However, the structure is a good work out, like doing wind sprints … or haiku.

Have you been following along or just a sample or two? Because in the whole series there’s been some really good hits.

I so far have done only novels and novellas, though I have a few short stories started. Have you (I assume you are THE Darleen) done anything else? Besides, that is, these shorties?
