Teenager Livestreams Her Friend’s Rape

The Decline and Fall of American Civilization:

An Ohio teenager accused of live-streaming the rape of her 17-year-old friend has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges stemming from the alleged incident in February.
Marina Lonina, 18, a student at New Albany High School, outside Columbus, was attempting to record the assault as evidence, her attorney, Sam Shamansky, said during a court appearance Friday.
“She’s in the habit of filming everything with this app called Periscope,” Shamansky acknowledged, according to ABC affiliate WSYX. . . .

(There’s an “app” called 911, you know.)

Her co-defendant, Raymond Gates, 29, also pleaded not guilty and his bond was set at $300,000, according to CBS News.
The pair has been charged with rape, kidnapping, sexual battery and pandering sexually oriented matter involving a minor, according to NBC affiliate WCMH-TV. . . .
Lonina and the victim — friends who attended the same high school — met Gates at a mall while they were shopping, Shamansky said. He bought them a bottle of vodka and encouraged them to meet the next day, which the victim wanted to do, he said. . . .

(Just a couple of teenage girls, shopping at the mall, accepting gifts of vodka from strangers. What could possibly go wrong?)

They were drinking at Gates’s home in Columbus on Feb. 27 when he began to sexually assault the 17-year-old and Lonina began live-streaming the violence using Periscope, Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O’Brien said, according to NBC affiliate WCMH.
A police report cited by WCMH accused Gates of holding the victim down using the weight of his body while assaulting her.
The report also says teenager can be heard screaming, “No, it hurts so much,” “Please stop” and “Please, no” multiple times.

Look, I hesitate to be judgmental about these things, but do neither of these girls have parents? And since we’re asking questions, what are they teaching kids at New Albany High School? Is it necessary to schedule classes in “Don’t Accept Vodka From Strangers”?

And what about Mr. Gates? Is it his habit to wander around shopping malls, offering bottles of vodka to teenage girls? How long has he been at this game, and how many other girls have taken him up on the offer?

Is this just what teenage girls do in 2016? “Hey, Marina, want to go to the mall and see if we can find a guy to give us vodka?” It’s all fun and games until everybody on the Internet watches you get raped.

Remember when a girl’s best friend would hold her hair back when she was throwing up?

What I can’t understand is the apparent naivete involved here. You’re a teenage girl, a senior in high school. You go to the mall with your friend and meet a 29-year-old guy who gives you a bottle of vodka. The next day, you and your friend go over to the guy’s house to drink some more.

What do you suppose has inspired this 29-year-old man to supply you with vodka? Do you think he’s just extraordinarily generous? A philanthropic humanitarian? Or do you think, just maybe, this guy has some kind of market exchange in mind? Like perhaps a fee-for-service arrangement?

Dear God, what world are these girls living in?

“Look, I hesitate to be judgmental about these things, but do neither of these girls have parents?”

    No they do not.

Fewer and fewer people are becoming adults. Instead hey stay in a state of perpetual adolescence. So even the kids who do have their biological progenitors in their lives still don’t have true parents: they have two older people with whom they share DNA who want to be their friends.

I could go on for hours about this, but you get the gist, you’ve written about it yourself many times.

Sadly, I am at a point where I believe the only way things will change is if some cataclysmic thing happens: a war, a collapse of society, a terror attack so large that it directly affects the lives of all Americans (directly being the key word; 9/11 shook us all, but it did not *directly* affect all of our lives).

So option 1) total collapse leads to forced return to reality

    2) continued decadence until we’re invaded and enslaved by some culture that is more barbaric (Islam, Russia, China etc)

    3) the trumpet sounds and we see Our Lord return.

Personally I’m hoping for number 3.

They’re living in a world in their phones. Listening to my friend’s stedaughter talk, I swear I don’t know how the girl is still alive.

It’s the Special Snowflake mentality. Kids are growing up with no respect for anything. They don’t believe in God, they hate America, they have contempt for the past, and they consider that their parents exist only to buy them stuff.

Lacking any sense of decency or moral duty, they live by a motto of “Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!” And when things turn out badly, or people refuse to give them what they want, they throw a tantrum and claim to be victims.

No they don’t have REAL parents. Has it occurred to anyone that today’s kids are living the Lord of the Flies for real?

Teenagers have been abusing alcohol for a long time. Of course they knew what they were doing had risk. It is the detachment and assistance by the so called girlfriend (by recording rather than reporting it) that shocks.

Mr Other McCain, I denounce you, I harshly denounce you, I thoroughly denounce you for blaming the victim for not having good parents! http://blondephotos.org/BlondeGator/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/dripping-sarcasm-gif.gif

    “911. What’ yer emergency?”

“I’d like to report a triple homicide. I got the whole thing on video.”

“Where should we send help, ma’am?”

“I dunno. Somewhere out in the woods. It happened last week. I’m not very good with youtube.”

I haven’t seen anything on the parents. The girl’s full name is Marina Alexeevna Lonina, suggesting that her parents were born in Russia and perhaps she was as well.

Conscientious parents sometimes fail. Inept slipping clutch parents sometimes see gross failures when a dozen other sets of parents just as inept are spared. No guarantees in this world.

The crime was reported by an out-of-state friend the victim who saw it on youtube or some such. I’m wondering how much of a delay in reporting the crime there was and why, if there was, the actual victim did not go to the police herself.

The app she recorded it on is called Periscope and it’s a live video feed, unlike YouTube that has to go through their site. So those watching it knew it was happening at that moment.

Growing up I was poor, shy and socially awkward. That spared me a ton of sorrow, I now realize. Friday nights were usually spent in my friend’s basement, watching HBO and talking about the girls we were too shy to ask out. I hated it then. Now, I thank God every day. I am married with a wonderful, beautiful wife, two great stepchildren and now grandchildren. Who knew that nerdy self-restraint would lead to happiness?

As others have intimated, this story is so bizarre, I have to think there was some planning involved between Lonina and Gates in advance of the assault. N.B. Lonina didn’t appear to fear for her own safety. She videoed the encounter instead of attacking Gates or running away. I don’t do Periscope, but I’d be interested to know who tuned into that live stream, and if there were some social media connections between Lonina/Gates and any spectators before the event. There are some very sick people out there.

Or was this a planned “scene” that went wrong when the “victim” decided to back out or decided to go to the police OR someone told the police about it so the “victim” decided to claim rape with her friend as witness.

I can’t believe a guy would start raping someone while another person was witnessing it AND allowing them to record it unless there was some collusion amongst at least 2 of the participants.

And once again a guy proves how stupid men can get when influences by a woman when the idea of sex is in the mix.

Anyone with male children should take note that they need more assistance and that they are at greater risk these days unless they are carefully taken in hand and taught what can and will happen.

Too many Fatherless boys and too many Fathers that don’t try to create a bond with their boys.

It’s just pitiful. I was just lucky that our family moved to the countryside with few neighbors before the end of my puberty.

I was so ignorant and what I did think I knew was so wrong.

Then I lucked out while in the service and didn’t connect with some of the wilder groups in my unit so I continued my virgin ways due to disease fears and no peer pressure.

    Fathers: talk to your boys

Mothers: get a man to talk to your boys and not some guy you’re “dating” but some male relative. Or some other good Father figure. (although how some females judge men as worthy has a lot to be desired for positive results)

The cruising the mall, looking to score booze part seems fairly normal to me. It’s the endpoint that seems to have become much more brutal.
    Today’s teens are desensitized.

The girl is a dead soul. Life to her is sensation, pixels, a movie, a video game, social media. She is a reprobate incapable of human feeling, a pitiful wretched empty vessel.

No question there’s more to this story. And you’re 100 percent correct about fathers establishing and maintaining a good relationship with their sons and being good examples. It’s no coincidence that the slide of our society toward the abyss has coincided with the increasing number of fatherless households.

I would only add that a father’s relationship with his daughter’s is equally important. That includes being an example of what a good husband is, so that she knows what to look for. One of the proudest days of my life occurred when my daughter ( now 25, triple major, Phi Beta Kappa, Summa Cum Laude) informed me that any potential suitor had to pass the “Dad Test.”

This is a fairly logical outcome of teaching girls that “all men are rapists”. Instead of exercising judgement (as much as you have at that age) and asking “why is this 29 year old wanting to associate with me, a 17 year old, and ply me with alcohol”?

Instead of teaching (society and parents) that men like this chap are trouble, and what to look out for, to teach simultaneously, don’t judge anyone, and all men are rapists.

Too many men having been rejected by or belittled by the women in their life idiolize their little girls and turn them into privileged princesses who go into shock when the first guy comes along and tells them they ain’t all that. Either they go nuts or they try to do anything and every thing to prove that guy wrong and usually at everyone’s expense.

Men are just as responsible for misguiding and misdirecting their daughters as women are at deluding and messing up their sons.

New Albany is the brood nest for places like Oberlin College. It’s not so much a place as it is an ethos. It’s where the nuveau riche go to proclaim that they are so wealthy that no tax rate is capable of impoverishing them. It’s Special Snowflake central where all the little girls take riding lessons and all the boys play Lacrosse. It’s where mother’s spend more trying to look young than they spend on food and housing combined. It’s where daddy’s third wife is only slightly older than his kids. It’s where Abercrombie met Fitch. It’s where everyone knows that Victoria’s Secret is that she’s a man named Les Wexner. It’s a platinum ghetto where the mundane realities rarely intrude.
