A man who lit himself on fire in front of the White House this week has died, and has been identified as Arnav Gupta, 33. While his motive is unknown, TMZ reports that D.C. police sources say they believe Gupta was under the influence of drugs, including PCP. Gupta grew up in the affluent D.C. suburb of Bethesda, Maryland, and attended elite schools, graduating from Landon School for boys in 2004 and Boston University in 2008. When your parents can afford to send you to Landon (tuition $43,560 a year) and BU ($69,668 a year, including room and board), they probably expect you to accomplish great things in life, and it doesn’t seem as if Arnav Gupta was accomplishing much of anything.

Heavy-dot-com reports that Gupta worked a couple of years after college as a coach at Landon School, and recently self-published a rather deranged poem called “Memoirs of a Shadow President.” According to his LinkedIn profile, Gupta had worked five years in “property management” which, if I had to guess, was related to his parents’ business. In short, he was an over-educated loser, a bum, a slacker, a disappointment to his family, and setting himself on fire in front of the White House was an act of desperate madness.
