MD-5 UPDATE: Charles Lollar Endorsed by Ace of Spades and Dude Named ‘Mitt’

“I have great confidence in my candidates, and they’re doing just fine in their districts.”
Nancy Pelosi

For some reason, Instapundit didn’t link Monday’s big post about Charles Lollar, a Marine intelligence officer challenging Steny Hoyer in Maryland’s 5th District. But this blog is read by the really important people — and also maybe Mitt Romney, who endorsed Lollar today.

Major Lollar got shout-outs from Jane Jamison at Uncoverage and from Reaganite Republican. (Also mentioned, not in a good way, by Dave Weigel who calls Lollar “a candidate no political handicapper thinks is actually in the position to score the upset.” Hey, Dave, I think you still owe me a beer for Christine O’Donnell’s upset of Mike Castle you didn’t see coming, to say nothing of Joe Miller in Alaska.)

The really big story today, however, is that Ace of Spades has climbed aboard the Stomp Steny Express:

I think this guy can do it. Someone’s getting shocked on November 2nd.
Dick Morris noted there were Democrats in real trouble who don’t even know it yet, since few bother to poll districts like Hoyer’s.

That mention by Dick Morris — on his radio blog, he just threw out Hoyer’s name as a potential upset victim if that Big Red Wave crashes ashore on Nov. 2 — evidently got people’s attention. My source close to Lollar says they’ve noticed Hoyer’s campaign trying to gin up an appearance of support from military personnel. Yet it seems that Steny himself is still whistling past his own political graveyard:

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer recently told Politico that he does not believe his party will lose control of the House of Representatives. Maybe it is part of the job description to live in La La Land, but if he really believes this then he is more out of touch than Stephen Colbert at a Congressional hearing. . . .
More than half the voters in his district live in southern, rural, conservative Maryland counties. Combine that with dispirited Democrats staying home on Election Day and Republicans energized like never before, and Hoyer is in real trouble. On top of that, Prince George’s County, Hoyer’s only base in his district, has higher unemployment and foreclosures than the surrounding areas. Clearly Hoyer’s clout in Congress hasn’t done much to benefit his supporters. . . .
Lollar is within 15,000 votes of the biggest upset of this election if he gets enough money in a hurry.

Serious as a heart attack, folks: When you look at Lollar’s dynamic can-do personality, and then you consider how disillusioned Democratic voters have become, 95,000 or 100,000 votes could be enough win this district, and Lollar’s the kind of guy who can do it.

Whoa! Mitt is early, normally he doesn’t endorse until the day after election day.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but, Major Lollar is improper address. Proper would be Major Lollar, USMCR or MAJ Lollar, USMCR. If he were properly Major or MAJ Lollar, he would be active duty (USMC) and prohibited from running for elective office. That said, Elect Lollar!!!

Charles Lollar is one of the finest men I have ever had the privilege of meeting. He is a dynamic speaker and leader. I live in Western Maryland and he has come over here 2 times to speak. He is fantastic and if the voters in his district don’t vote for him they are crazy. He would be an amazing asset to their communities as their representative in Congress. A true man of character.
