World Cup Overkill: Associated Press Writes 1,068 Words About 1-1 Tie

Posted on | June 13, 2010 | 49 Comments

There ought to be some kind of special Pulitzer for this:

Clint Dempsey became only the second American to score in two World Cups, getting the tying goal in the 40th minute on a blunder by goalkeeper Robert Green. Howard made six saves, withstanding a second-half barrage by Wayne Rooney and his celebrated teammates. . . .
Anticipation had built for six months for the much-hyped game, the first competitive meeting between the nations since the famous 1-0 U.S. upset at the 1950 World Cup in Brazil. There were viewing parties across America, and several Major League Soccer teams opened their stadiums to show the match from across the world on large video boards. . . .

And on and on it goes. Like this was the seventh game of the World Series, the Super Bowl, the NCAA Final Four, the Indy 500 and the Battle of Armageddon, all rolled into one.

A 1-1 tie. In a first-round game.

They didn’t even have a riot. What kind of soccer game is that, huh?

Up to your little games again are you RSM? I am the destination blog. I am the most popular one-man political blog site in the world. Yes, Andrew Sullivan stole that line from me. Just another blog thief.

My morning constitutionals have more relevance than anything camp followers like Allahpundit, Ace, or you do. In fact, Kilgore Trout saves them all, shrink wraps them, and catalogs them for eventual inclusion in the Charles Johnson Mueseum.

Don’t say I never gave anything to you RSM (other than a place to steal my leads because you are dazzeled–and rightly so–by my brillance)…

    A Rule 5 contribution.

Not as if the rest of the world gives a damn about a stereotype Stupid American like you anyway.

What country are you from? I have the overwhelming urge this morning to advocate the invasion and conquest on some pissant little country, just for the sheer glorious hell of it.

    I bet you’re Canadian, aren’t you?

“Stereotype Stupid American” would be a great blog name, by the way.

We wouldn’t make fun of kickball if they hadn’t been trying to shove it down our unwilling throats for the last 30 years. I wouldn’t make fun of Michelle Obama’s looks if they hadn’t held her up as the ultimate beauty.

Well, “gg” obviously gave enough of a damn to leave the comment…

Probably a bitter fan of England — most of the other subcontinent types at my local pub were wearing English jerseys.

(I usually cheer for England, too — but I couldn’t help letting out a few rousing renditions of “From the Halls of Montezuma…” yesterday. Sports is tribal.)

gg, go watch some cricket. I mean seriously, soccer is like a version of T-ball played by adults. 90 minutes for possibly one goal? I suspect you guys are into it because you can safely go get another round of beers without worrying you will miss something.

I was once told that Soccer, it is a game for gentlemen watched by hooligans; Rugby is a game for hooligans, watched by gentlemen.

Soccer is part of the Left’s march through the institutions of America. Boys brought up to think soccer is a legitimate sport for Americans are boys who will become metrosexuals – and that’s what the Progressives want: sensitive nancy-boys who believe that winning is not as important as style.

    Shoot me now.
