‘Diversity Is Our Strength’ — And Also Leads to Hate-Crime Murder in New York

Dan Riehl points out that “three Hispanic males” were implicated in the murder of a gay black man in Greenwich Village, a potentially relevant fact that the New York Times couldn’t be bothered to mention in maundering on about the historic vicinity of the crime:

Mark Carson did not hide that he was gay, and when he went out on the town he would often head to Greenwich Village, where years before he was born, much of the struggle for gay liberation unfolded. Yet late Friday night, just blocks from the Stonewall Inn, among the most important landmarks of that struggle, he was confronted with a man screaming antigay slurs, who then stalked him before pulling out a silver revolver and fatally shooting him, the police said. . . .
“There was a time in New York City when two people of the same gender could not walk down the street arm-in-arm without fear of violence and harassment,” said Christine C. Quinn, the City Council speaker, whose district includes the Village and who hopes to become the city’s first openly gay mayor. “We refuse to go back to that time.”

No, Ms. Quinn, we are going forward to that time: A deluge of immigration, the breakdown of the family, the failure of public education, economic malaise — pious liberal sermonizing cannot eliminate the sources of social friction that lead to crimes like this.

Tres hombres decide to go swaggering muy macho through the West Village on Friday night, looking for somebody to fight:

According to Mr. Kelly, the gunman was in the neighborhood with two other men shortly before midnight when he urinated in front of the Annisa bar and restaurant on Barrow Street at West Fourth Street.
The man then went inside and angrily confronted the bartender with antigay slurs, the police said, pulling up his gray hooded sweatshirt, and revealing a silver revolver in a shoulder holster. He threatened the bartender that if he called the police, he would be killed, the police said.

Gun-control laws, hate-crime laws — none of New York’s laws could protect a “fabulous gay man” from Harlem and his boyfriend:

Both the victim and another man with him were wearing tank tops, cutoff shorts and boots.
“Do you want to die here?” Morales asked the victim.

Does this involve the Men on Strike phenomenon?

American society has become anti-male. Men are sensing the backlash and are consciously and unconsciously going “on strike.” They are dropping out of college, leaving the workforce and avoiding marriage and fatherhood at alarming rates. . . . [M]en aren’t dropping out because they are stuck in arrested development. They are instead acting rationally in response to the lack of incentives society offers them to be responsible fathers, husbands and providers.

In a culture where the ordinary sources of male self-esteem are stigmatized, doesn’t violent machismo become more common?

Ethnic minorities don’t generally see homosexuality as a protected status for good reason. Everyone has the right not to be murdered or otherwise physically assaulted, regardless of what they think and regardless of what they look like. The idea that what we think and what we look like should have anything to do with whether we deserve to be safe is an idea that “hate crimes” legislation is based in. All assault is a hate crime, no matter who is doing the assaulting and no matter who is being assaulted. Unfortunately, the left will never get this, because they prefer to think in terms of some groups being oppressed by others. They drive hate against groups perceived to be oppressive groups….in the name of “ending hate.” It’s insane.

“American society has become anti-male. ” Nice victim card. What is actually happening is straight white males are no longer the sole drivers of society, and they have not demonstrated knack for sharing power. So power is being taken from them, as it should from any whining child, whines such as:

“Men are sensing the backlash and are consciously and unconsciously going “on strike.”

Picking up your marbles and going home has not worked for these “males.” Why would it work in the future? See: U.S. Senate, the biggest group of whiners on the planet.

    Times they are a changin.

Our esteemed host, after noting a “deluge of (illegal) imigration, asked:

In a culture where the ordinary sources of male self-esteem are stigmatized, doesn’t violent machismo become more common?

Which one is it? If the tres hombres were recent immigrants, then they had rather little time for the stigmatization of ordinary sources of male self-esteem to have had an impact; if they were her long enough to have been assimilated, it’s not really an immigration problem.,

The real problem is that there is no longer a real American culture for minorities. As you have pointed out, our friends on the left have attempted to destroy all of that patriarchal stuff, but, for minorities, especially the men, the reaction has been to “assimilate” a minority sub-culture which has masculine models, but which has gone off the rails into glamorizing violence of a sort that can get them thrown in prison.

Many people have noted that the new, progressive “male” model is one of wimpiness, and that weaker males are the ones internalizing it, but the real problem is that the progressive model isn’t being learned by minority males, but actively rejected, in a way which leads them into poverty (by quitting school) and prison.

But, hate crime or not, it doesn’t matter: the penalty for murder in the Empire State is life in prison, and there’s nothing more that a “hate crime” addition can add to that sentence.

I think i see the linkage to men on strike that RSM is trying to make. The bar, presumably full of men, might have acted in some way to protect themselves, others, the way that men did in that theater inAurora, CO.

Instead, they did nothing, and the predators got one of them. They had already abandoned manly things, wearing tank tops and Daisy Dukes. Already on strike from the Hobbesian world, people not so enlightened came in and introduced them to the phrase solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.

I don’t care if the three men in question hated loved, approved disapproved of Mark Carson’s lifestyle.

What DOES matter is did they apparently killed him.

That’s the crime here, murder and it should be treated as such.

    Period.

Carson’s murder is wrong because he a person who has the right to life, not for any other reason.

If we define the importance of Mr. Carson’s murder solely on who he choose to have sex with then we demean his value as an individual.

We should all be defined as Americans or United States citizens. Not straight, white, gay, black, Hispanic, etc.. You Progs like to break people up into little victim groups and blame thier problems on whitey, not because you give a shit, but because you need to keep a permanent voter base in line.

But but but what if they were just “Sadist-Americans” out to “celebrate diversity” in their own way? If you keep h8ing the h8ers, it just multiplies the hate. Now give the shooter a hug and a rainbow wristband, and let’s all join hands and sing “Kumbayah” around a bonfire on the beach*.

    * Maybe just around a picture of a bonfire, there may be ordinances on public burning and – oh my! – just THINK of the greenhouse gases!

Nice exercise in Marcuse/Adorno cultural Marxist analysis, Knauer. The fact that they were on the wrong side of history — well, let’s just pretend like that has no significance, eh?

Excellent points, all. Bill Cosby and others have noticed how rejection of educational achievement as a “white thing” is common to black ghetto culture. But this anti-social alienation is also common enough in what we might call redneck “trailer park” culture, as Charles Murray has recently pointed out. And in both cases, rejection of the essentially pacifist values of the educated elite is expressed by embracing an ultra-violent macho pose, whether it’s shoot-’em-up video games or televised extreme fighting or drive-by shootings.

I left out of my grocery list of contemporary woes the decline of religious belief, but obviously “Thou shalt not kill” wasn’t part of Eliot Morales’s moral code.

Have you ever read Faulkner’s novella Sanctuary? It’s about a culture-clash in which a couple of degenerate college students stumble into a den of outlaw bootleggers. The college kids, having led a rather sheltered existence, aren’t prepared to cope with the hard realities they encounter.

It strikes me that gay men out enjoying a Friday night in the Village, similarly, wouldn’t be very well prepared to cope with someone like Morales. When he displayed the pistol to the bartender — yeah, that was kind of a signal that Morales wasn’t there to “celebrate diversity.”

Morales was walking full Chollo, and the “tank tops, shorts, boots” get-up was a signpost daring him to follow through. It never fails to amaze me that idiots like our current City Council speaker can talk the sociologists’ shit without understanding what it means on the ground.

The gunman goes to the Village to shoot gays? How gay is that (in a repressed psychotic way)?

Maybe they will force him into classes to be more open and tolerant. Wait is that cruel and unusual punishment? Of course the most racist institutions in the USA are prisons (especially state ones). It is a common social phenomenon that if you force groups together without common purpose or mission, there is immediate tribal social segregation that occurs. Race is common, but it will happen on any basis (think Lord of the Flies).

As it happens, I grew up pretty close to the “trailer trash” situation, not in a trailer, but definitely poor, in the South. I see many differences between the anti-education bias in the urban black subculture, and in the Southern rural white areas.

The biggest problem in the “redneck” areas is that they are so separated from everything else; prosperity isn’t blocks away, but several counties away. They are wiling to work, and work hard, but there simply isn’t much opportunity locally.
