Feminist Tumblr Syndrome

Posted on | January 9, 2016 | 197 Comments

Kylo Ren is the name of the villain in the latest Star Wars movie. You may wonder, “What does that have to do with feminism?” Honestly, I don’t know, but Lis is a feminist Tumblr blogger:

I’m a 20 year old dfab white demigirl living in the United States with my parents. Currently, I’m in college and am looking for a job. I enjoy a lot of things and have a lot of friends, and talk a lot about video games and am very opinionated. I’m bisexual, and living in a very hostile environment for a person such as myself so I use tumblr as an outlet for various frustrations I feel because of that.

Got that? OK, so now you may be ready for this from Lis:

Kylo Ren, cishet white male, 30. I hope I offend you. Try and argue with me, your ignorant anger is the reason I get up in the morning. Triggered yet?

It is perhaps necessary, for readers not familiar with Third Wave feminist jargon, for me to explain that “dfab” means designated female at birth — biologically, she’s female — and “demigirl” is “a gender identity describing someone who partially, but not wholly, identifies as” female. Whenever I encounter bizarre jargon terms like this (which are very common in Feminist Tumblr) my first impulse is alway to wonder, “Has she consulted an endocrinologist?”

This is not merely sarcasm. Because I intend to include a chapter on Feminist Tumblr in the second edition of Sex Trouble, I’ve plowed through enough of these blog profiles that various patterns and clusters of symptoms have become apparent to me. “Feminist Tumblr Syndrome” typically involves a combination of mental illness and abnormal sexuality. There may be feminists who are both (a) sane and (b) heterosexual, but none of those women are running Tumblr blogs.

These women are a non-random set — there is a pattern, as I say — and in many cases, the Feminist Tumblr blogger will describe herself in ways that seem symptomatic of endocrine disorders. I find myself wondering, “Has your doctor checked your thyroid function? Do you have any problems with your metabolism? What about your hormone levels? Is there some kind of underlying gynecological problem? An undetected cyst somewhere? Could you maybe ask the doctor to run an MRI?”

It is difficult to believe that an entirely healthy 20-year-old would be spending all her time on Tumblr, describing herself as a bisexual “dfab white demigirl,” claiming she is the victim of a “hostile environment” and ranting about Star Wars characters.

Crazy is as crazy does, I guess, and the fact that I consider these weirdos on Feminist Tumblr to be a subject for journalistic research may not say much for my own mental health. Yet if “the personal is political,” as Carol Hanisch says, we cannot understand feminism without examining the demography of the movement’s rank-and-file, and in the 21st century, one way to do this is by examining the movement’s online presence in free-for-all venues like Tumblr. And let me point out something you may not have noticed: Lis’s denunciation of Kylo Ren (which got nearly 12,000 notes on Tumblr) labeled him a “cishet white male.”

OK, what is “cishet”? This jargon term combines the prefix cis– (which is the opposite of trans-) and “het” which is short for heterosexual, so that “cishet” just means a man who is sexually and biologically normal, and Feminist Tumblr demonizes “cishet white males” as the Worst Thing Any Human Could Possibly Be.

Young feminists evidently believe it is wrong to be male, wrong to be white, and wrong to be heterosexual. The rhetoric of the feminist movement, day in and day out, looks very much like hate propaganda against anyone who fits the category of “cishet white males,” and yet nobody ever seems to question this type of categorical hatred.

To understand this hatred, perhaps it might help to take a look at the feminist “humor” of The White Dad Magazine.

Once we understand feminism as organized irrationality — the political mobilization of mentally ill women — we can recognize their rhetoric as symptoms and their ideology as a disease.

Dad’s are kind of hard to get. Mine never said much. He brought the fishing rig behind him, like he was pointing at one of my footprints in the sand that wasn’t neat enough. Then he cast it with just a hint of violence. Maybe one of the clouds was bad.
He smiled at me with eyes full of something that seemed to get stuck in his throat and handed me the pole.
“Here you are, honey.”
Fishing there with him in the ocean was the happiest time. Mom said that was as far from Afghanistan as he could go.

Feminist Barbie and ‘Rape Culture’

Posted on | January 7, 2016 | 44 Comments

“Math class is tough!”

With that simple four-word phrase, Mattel’s “Teen Talk Barbie” became the focus of a feminist uproar in 1992. The prestige of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) was invoked in a successful crusade to make the talking doll shut up. The abundant research showing that, on average, boys actually do better at math, and that Teen Talk Barbie’s complaint was therefore something many girls could relate to, did not matter to feminist fanatics at the AAUW who targeted the Mattel toy in “a report on how schools shortchange girls.”

Of course, as with everything else feminists say, this was a lie. It is actually boys who are shortchanged in American schools, which now systematically discourage male academic achievement:

Statistically, boys drop out of high school at higher rates than girls. Boys get lower grades and report liking school less. Men enter college at lower rates than women, and are more likely to drop out once they get there. Women receive the majority of master’s and doctorate degrees. The suicide rate is about four times higher among men than women.

Anti-male discrimination in the American education system is part of what Christina Hoff Sommers calls The War Against Boys. (See also  The Decline of Males by Lionel Tiger and Men on Strike by Helen Smith.) Women are now 57% of college undergraduate enrollment and feminists have stirred up a phony “rape epidemic” hysteria to make it clear — if it was not already clear — that heterosexual males are not welcome on university campuses. Feminists seek to achieve “equality” by preventing male achievement; stigmatizing college men as rapists and mocking them as “nerds” is part of a deliberate campaign to reduce educational and employment opportunities for young males.

Creating an attitude of anti-male sexual paranoia (“Fear and Loathing of the Penis”) is essential to the success of this feminist effort. Promoting the false claim that 1-in-5 female college students are victims of rape was the centerpiece of a “rape culture” discourse used to deprive male students of due-process rights. More than 100 lawsuits have been filed by college men who say they were falsely accused of sexual assault and denied their constitutional rights in campus disciplinary procedures demanded by feminist activists and imposed by Obama administration officials (the infamous 2011 “Dear Colleague” letter).

Having enlisted Democrat politicians and the media in a nationwide campaign to create a climate of anti-male rage among female university students, however, feminists are now confronted by an absence of evidence (“The Campus Rape Shortage”) of the alleged epidemic of sexual assault. “Math class is tough,” like Barbie said, and the actual numbers don’t add up to anything remotely near the 1-in-5 claim that feminists have promoted. Mark J. Perry at the American Enterprise Institute has done the math:

In a January 2014 report titled “Rape and Sexual Assault: A Renewed Call to Action” (which led to the creation of the “White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault” headed by Vice-President Joe Biden), the White House made the following two claims:
White House Claim 1. Sexual assault is a particular problem on college campuses: 1 in 5 women has been sexually assaulted while in college (pages 1, 2, 10, 14).
White House Claim 2. Reporting rates for campus sexual assault are also very low: on average only 12% of student victims report the assault to law enforcement (page 14). . . .
I’ve done the math using: a) the actual number of reported sexual assaults for several major college campuses and b) the White House reporting percentage claim of only 12%, for the University of Florida, Ohio State University, the University of Texas-Austin, Michigan State University, the University of Wisconsin, the University of Michigan, and UC-Berkeley, and found that the estimated number of college women who are sexually assaulted while in college is between 1 in 20 and 1 in 79. That’s still too high, but it’s nowhere near 1 in 5.
Let’s do some more math using recently updated crime statistics from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities for the four years from 2011-2014 (data are available here for 2012-2014 and here for 2011, and those data are summarized in the Table 1 above) and the White House’s reporting assumption of 12%. Over the most recent four-year period, there were 80 reports of “forcible sex offenses” at the University of Minnesota’s main Twin Cities campus. We’ll assume that 100% of the sexual assaults victims were female and 100% of the offenders were male. Using the White House claim that only 12% of campus sexual assaults get reported, there would have been approximately 587 unreported sexual assaults at UM during that period, bringing the total number of sexual assaults (reported + unreported) to 667. . . .
The University of Minnesota main campus has a total student population of 50,500, and about 26,000 of those students are female. Dividing the 667 estimated sexual assaults (80 reported + 587 unreported) over the most recent four-year period into the 26,000 Minnesota female students would mean that only 2.56% of University Minnesota women, or about 1 in 39, would be sexually assaulted while in college for four years. . . .

Read the whole thing and remember that Perry’s calculations are based on the assumption that 88% of campus sexual assaults are never reported, a generous concession to the ideologues who fomented this anti-male hoax with Statistical Voodoo and Elastic Definitions.

Feminists lie about rape, because feminists lie about everything.

Marriage Matters

Posted on | January 6, 2016 | 35 Comments

Melissa Braunstein (@slowhoneybee on Twitter) is one of the handful of conservatives — along with Christina Hoff Sommers and Ashe Schow — who work the feminism beat on a full-time basis. She has an excellent article at The Federalist about the A&E series “Married at First Sight”:

Jann Gumbiner, a licensed psychologist and clinical professor at the University of California, Irvine College of Medicine, watched her own parents divorce when she was young. She wrote on Psychology Today’s blog:

Psychological theory of the 70s was heavily influenced by Maslow and self-actualization theory. People believed that it was OK to get divorced for self-growth. It was OK for parents to leave families to pursue a dream of happiness. This is selfish, plain and simple.

It’s now-grown children like Gumbiner that we see on “Married at First Sight.” These 20- and 30-somethings may be professionally successful, but emotionally speaking, they are the walking wounded.
In recent decades, boys have been told that they must not be overtly masculine, let alone chivalrous, because that would be sexist. American girls, meanwhile, have been taught that they must be strong and assertive, and that they don’t need a man.
Now, a woman doesn’t need a man, but she might want one in her life. While assertiveness can be a net positive, there must be room for compromise, because most of us find long-term happiness in complementary, caring relationships. But when young people enact this guidance, it doesn’t always play out happily.
Consider the latest season of “Married at First Sight.” . . . The six current “Married at First Sight” participants — all millennials — were plucked from 2,500 Atlanta-area singles, underscoring the widespread appeal of reality TV participation. . . .
Notably, five of the six singles participating this season saw their parents split by the time they were in high school. Divorce can have a long-lasting impact on children, including on their health.

Dr. Beverly Rodgers, founder of Adult Children of Divorce Parents and counselor for married couples from divorced families, said that many of her clients explain they feel ‘an overwhelming sense of doom’ about their relationships. A major consequence of this, she said, these children often have trouble trusting romantic partners in their adult lives because ‘trust could leave them feeling duped or foolish, in the same way that one or both parents felt in their own divorce.’

Of course, many children of divorce grow up to be emotionally healthy. However, some of the newlyweds here are uneasy with vulnerability and trust. Whether that’s related to the toxicity of their parents’ marriage, fall-out from the divorce, or an X-factor isn’t clarified, but surely that history haunts these new unions.

Read the whole thing. (Hat-tip: Instapundit.) Distrust, hostility, fear of commitment — if you’ve ever encountered one of these “walking wounded” victims of parental divorce, you know exactly what she’s talking about.  The first generation of these victims were the so-called “Generation X” kids born in the late 1960s and ’70s. Many of them became parents in the 1990s, and divorced, and so now you have a lot of 20-somethings whose parents and grandparents are divorced. Breaking the cycle of marital failure may be very difficult for such people.

Related: Wednesday, I spent a lot of time researching Professor Sandra Bem, a pioneer of feminist gender theory and author of the widely cited 1993 book The Lenses of Gender: Transforming the Debate on Sexual Inequality. I’ll write more about her later, but what is important to know is that, for decades, she and her husband, Professor Daryl Bem, were leading advocates of “egalitarian marriage” and “gender-neutral parenting.” After hours of researching, I came across a quote from Sandra Bem’s 1998 book An Unconventional Family.

This is significant, I think. What is suggested by the fact that this celebrated feminist “egalitarian marriage” ultimately failed, and that both spouses then entered homosexual relationships? And how do you suppose the experiment in gender-neutral parenting turned out?

Muslim Rape Gangs Attack Women, and Feminists Won’t Say a Word About It

Posted on | January 5, 2016 | 87 Comments

Sexual savagery on the streets of Germany:

Roving packs of men sexually assaulted dozens of women on New Year’s Eve in western Germany’s city of Cologne, officials said, describing the attacks as unprecedented.
The spree suggested a “new dimension of organized criminality,” German justice minister Heiko Maas told a press conference on Tuesday.
Police said the attackers — who struck in pairs and groups of up to 20 men — appeared to be part of a larger, 1,000-strong group that had gathered in one of the city’s main plazas for New Year’s celebrations.
Cologne’s police spokesman Thomas Held told NBC News that authorities had fielded around 90 complaints of pick-pocketing, groping and at least one of rape.
Eye witnesses described getting groped multiple times near the city’s train station and its famed cathedral.
“It was horror. Although we shouted and hit around us, the guys did not stop. I was desperate,” a 28-year-old woman identified as Katja L. told Cologne’s Express newspaper, saying she was groped about 100 times while walking 600 feet.

(It was almost as bad as a University of Virginia frat party.)

Another woman, who did not give her name, told Bild newspaper that several men attacked her and her friend. “They had circled us and started to grope us. They were everywhere with their hands,” she said. . . .
Police on Monday had said the suspects appeared to be of “Arab or North African descent,” sparking fears on social media they were among around 1 million asylum seekers who have flooded Germany this year.

American feminists, who have incited irrational hysteria over a non-existent “rape epidemic” on U.S. college campuses, will ignore this news. American feminists never said a word about the Rotherham Horror, in which English girls as young as 11 were pimped out by Muslim predators. American feminists don’t want to call attention to certain crimes committed by certain criminals, and it is not just Juanita Broaddrick’s rape accusation against Bill Clinton that feminists demand that we ignore. The feminist movement in the United States is controlled by the Democrat Party, and therefore rape is just a talking-point to them, an “issue” that feminists help Democrats exploit for partisan purposes. Because feminists are dishonest partisans, their agenda requires a lot of deliberate falsification — the phony “1-in-5” statistic, the UVA rape hoax, etc. — and it also requires feminists to ignore a lot of actual rapes which do not fit the Democrat Party-approved propaganda narrative.

Feminists have expended enormous effort to create the impression that rape is a crime commonly committed by “privileged” college boys. This falsehood serves the interests of the Democrat Party in several ways, especially because demonizing “privileged” (i.e., white, middle-class, heterosexual) males is part of a message that helps Democrats mobilize female voters, minority voters and gay voters. This is a type of hate propaganda which masquerades as “progressivism.”

By an obverse principle, the Democrat Party propaganda machine (including feminists) ignore any news that would suggest either (a) mass immigration is harmful to American society, or (b) Islam is dangerous. No matter how many violent crimes against women in the U.S. are committed by illegal aliens, no America feminist will ever call attention to such a crime, because all immigrants are presumably part of the Democrat coalition, and it’s bad publicity to mention how much harm their party’s constituents inflict on innocent Americans. (This is why liberals ignore rampant crime in Chicago and other Democrat Party strongholds.) Similarly, because most Republicans believe that radical Islam poses an existential threat to American civilization, Democrats (including feminists) pretend that Muslims are less dangerous than Methodists, Mormons or Mennonites. For more than three decades, feminists have been shrieking about the theocratic menace posed by “the Religious Right” (i.e., any Christian who votes Republican) and yet at the same time, feminists demand that Americans believe Muslims are all harmless misunderstood victims of “Islamophobia.”

American feminists will tell any lie if it helps the Democrat Party, and you will be accused of “hate” if you dare to tell the truth about what unrestricted Muslim immigration will mean:

Just five arrests have been made by German police after central Cologne was transformed into a war-zone on New Year’s Eve, as an estimated 1,000 migrants celebrated by launching fireworks into crowds and sexually assaulting German women caught up in the chaos.
The sordid details of the horrifying sexual assaults and attacks made against ordinary Germans by large gangs of migrants in Cologne in the early hours of Friday morning are just now emerging. . . .
One woman had her tights and underwear torn off by the crowd, and a police source quoted said there had been “rapes” at the station that night.
So far, police have identified 80 victims of the gangs, 35 of which were subjected to sex attacks. Others were assaulted or robbed. Officers suspect there are many more as of yet unreported cases from the night, and are appealing for victims to come forward after their ordeals. . . .
In addition to the sex attacks, there were several brawls between migrant gangs at the railway station, and large numbers of fireworks were fired into the crowds and at the hapless police.

This violent mayhem is coming soon to an American city near you, thanks to the Democrat Party and their feminist propaganda squads.
