More to the point, how does your recent endorsement of #OccupyResoluteDesk square with the idea of a commander abandoning his troops in their hour of need?
This bit from Hayward stretches credulity, emphasis mine:

But I appraised the genius of Powell’s endorsement when I saw Chris Matthews’ reaction to it: “Do we really want to go back to people who got us into war in Iraq?” I’m sure by this Matthews means that a President Romney would be Bush III, but might this not work even better on those lefty voters who see Obama as Bush III? If the person who sold the Iraq War at the UN is now selling us Obama, I can see another hundred thousand votes going to the Green and Libertarian Party candidates. It’s right out of the Rush Limbaugh “Operation Chaos” playbook. Powell may have just won Wisconsin for Romney.

That seems too clever by half, Steven. Whatever damage is done in one state (an maybe Wisconsin really is that loopy, harboring a TrogloPundit like it does) but various ethnic and military constituencies would more than outweigh the damage in cheese-land, I should think.

Except that, based upon the Benghazi rumors tumbling like skeleton bones out of that Libyan closet, nobody but said skeletons should be brain-dead enough to cast a ballot for #OccupyResoluteDesk.

Seriously. I can’t figure out why the ex-chairman of the Joint Chiefs, and also former Secretary of State, would endorse such a useless piece of work as Barack for any office. Nor is it fair to play any guilt-by-association card with Farrakhan. But that does add a certain interesting angle, doesn’t it?

FROM OHIO: ROMNEY GAINS IN STATE POLL, NOW TIED WITH OBAMA

Just pulled into a McDonald’s here on the  way to a Romney-Ryan rally in Marion — two and a half hours away — to quickly note the latest news via the Columbus Dispatch:

Romney closes Obama’s lead to split Ohio
Boosted by a surge among male voters who think he’s the best candidate to fix the economy, Republican Mitt Romney has come back to tie President Barack Obama in battleground Ohio.
They are deadlocked at 49?percent in a new Dispatch/Ohio News Organization poll. Obama was ahead by 5 points in the same poll published on Sept. 16.
How does that tie get broken in the next nine days?
“In the final days before the election, both campaigns will focus on turning out their bases, appealing to independents and attracting the few undecided voters that remain,” said Eric Rademacher, co-director of the University of Cincinnati’s Institute for Policy Research, which conducted the poll for Ohio’s eight largest newspapers.
“Absent any more twists and turns, a remarkable presidential campaign may end with the campaign that executes the best ‘ground game,’ narrowly delivering Ohio for the next president of the United States.”
The Buckeye State, the nation’s top presidential bellwether since 1900, is always important in a presidential election. But this year might be giving Ohio voters an attention-surplus disorder, with more than 70 visits by presidential candidates or their running mates, unprecedented ad spending, and reporters from around the world fanning across the state. Last week, a New York Times statistical analysis called Ohio more important than the other 49 states combined. . . .

Read the whole thing. I’ve got to get back on the road quickly — the Marion rally starts at 6:30 — but if you needed any further omens of how this campaign is going, Andrew Sullivan has once again gone absolutely Looney Tunes, almost certainly a harbinger of Republican victory.

Judge Jeanine Rips BHO Over Benghazi, And There Is A Larger Problem

I had never seen or heard of Justice with Judge Jeanine, but this clip, apparently from last night, is succinct, on point, and brutal:

Deeper than the specifics of #Benghaziquiddick* is the leadership problem afoot here. You can overtly cripple the U.S. military with budget cuts. You can covertly cripple the U.S. military by trashing its morale.

On my first WESPAC cruise in 1989, we spent several days which were supposed to be a port call in Singapore carving circles in the water not far from that port. Why? A young deck seaman on one of the Knox-class frigates had gone overboard. Such tragedies occur for all manner of reasons, savory and less so. However, every squid in that battle group knew that, if it was them, the battle group was going to do precisely the same thing: make every reasonable effort to recover you alive, or at least recover you.

This notion of “never leaving a buddy” is pounded into every military head at every rank. Should you hold the privilege of commanding a unit, I perceive it counts double: you neither want to see a buddy left dangling in the breeze, and you really don’t want the anguish of explaining to the world why there was a death within you command.

Which brings us to our current Commander-in-Chief, #OccupyResoluteDesk. I don’t believe the principle of “never leaving a buddy” eluded George W. Bush, say whatever else you will of his policies. In contrast, you have the Obama White House needing to dispute a story that it sends form letters to families of the fallen. Wow.

The idea of a cowardly POTUS, whose ‘gutsy calls’ come only after excessive amounts of Hamlet-esque hand-wringing is staggering. If you don’t grasp the basic notion of “never-leave-a-buddy”, then you are not fit for the role of Commander-in-Chief at all. I would muster measurably more respect for BHO if it turned out he was a Machiavellian scoundrel who was using U.S. lives as hostage bait. Let Ambassador Stevens become a useful crisis for October, to own the news cycle, and freeze out Romney. In such a scenario, he’d do some grand deal around Halloween, and then victory laps until the election. One wishes for certainty that this was not the intent of Benghazi.

Now we see how, BHO’s lack of loyalty down turns into a lack of loyalty up. There exists a category of no-talent clown who thinks that rank or office is what matters, and fundamentals like “never leave a buddy” do not. Au contraire, mon fine French frere. Sir Blames-a-lot may point a finger, but the information leaks are going to continue to point back at him. Obama really isn’t anyone’s buddy, and he’s not actually getting left behind. At least not in the same sense as Stevens, Smith, Woods, and Doherty. Yet the same callous indifference Obama offered Americans in a real-world crisis is being repaid him in spades.

Couldn’t happen to a more deserving piece of work.

FAIRFAX, VA–I trundled around in Fairfax Station for three hours this morning. Nice McMansions, including a family named Riehl that allowed no relationship to Famous Blogger Dan. After lunch at the excellent Four Sisters, I headed over to see the Carnivorous Conservative.

INOVA Fairfax is a mad place. You park in the Gray Lot, walk through one building, take an elevator up, walk through a connecting hallway, and into the main tower. Dan had been moved from Intensive Care to a slightly less intensive area one floor up.  Whether the name of his new digs are ‘Intermediate’ or ‘Medical’ care was unclear, but he’s gone from the second to the third floor in the tower.

And joy was had, then uploaded to Twitter:

Dan is improving. He didn’t care to delve into the specifics of his condition, but I was to understand that he was fairly close to done with life on Wednesday, when he checked in. Seeing him conscious, he looked a couple of orders of magnitude better than yesterday in the ICU. The moral support of the blogs and Twitter and friends is helping. Stacy McCain called after seeing the second tweet listed here, and offered encouragement, but holding a phone conversation ran Dan out of breath rather rapidly.

If the Hurricane Sandra hasn’t cleaned the stores out entirely, I’ll see about liberating a case of Diet Coke and then check in on Dan tomorrow afternoon. It’s the least I can do. As a commenter on an earlier post noted, you’re dropping a mortgage payment a day for the privilege of being in a hospital. So do remember Dan Riehl’s tipjar in the right column on his blog.

Boston, MA – On Sunday, Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan will continue the bus tour across the Buckeye State by attending Victory Events at Celina Fieldhouse in Celina, Ohio and the University of Findlay in Findlay, Ohio, where they will be joined by Big & Rich. They will then attend a Victory Rally at the Marion County Fairgrounds Coliseum in Marion, Ohio. Please note that Mitt Romney’s events in Virginia have been postponed due to public safety concerns.

Just got this word about an hour ago. I had been planning to attend the Romney rally in Haymarket, Virginia, but now have changed plans and will be going to Ohio instead.

The approach of Hurricane Sandy along the East Coast forced Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney to scrap a planned campaign swing Sunday in Virginia, rerouting the GOP contender to the battleground state of Ohio instead.
“I was looking forward to being in Virginia tomorrow but you know the hurricane is headed up there, and I just spoke with the governor, Governor [Bob] McDonnell, and the governor and I talked about that. He said, you know, the first responders really need to focus on preparation for the storm, so we’re not going to be able to be in Virginia tomorrow, we’re going to Ohio instead,” Romney told some 4000 supporters at a rally [in Kissimmee] Saturday.

UPDATE II: Just calculated the drive time to Marion, Ohio, which will be the last of three stops on the Romney-Ryan Sunday tour of Ohio:

UPDATE III: So this is it, I guess. My plan had been to see Mitt in Virginia before heading to Ohio for a week, but now it’s an early departure to Ohio, thanks to a freak late-season hurricane.

Ali Akbar will join me on this expedition, continuing a three-year adventure that goes back to when we first met during the legendary NY-23 campaign of Doug Hoffman in 2009. The Hoffman campaign — the first true test of the Tea Party movement as a political force — now seems like a million years ago. But then again, the Iowa caucuses seem like a million years ago, too, and that was only last January. It’s been a wild ride, and it promises to get wilder yet.

By the way, Smitty went by to see Dan Riehl today. As my Twitter followers know, Dan is doing a bit better, and is now out of the ICU. He should continue to be in our prayers, and if you haven’t hit Dan’s tip jar yet, now’s the time to do it. I gave him another $25 today myself.

All the signs and omens are propitious, you see, and I just got word that the Des Moines Register has endorsed Romney. “Preference cascade.”

UPDATE IV: From the Des Moines Register endorsement:

The Register’s editorial board, as it should, had a vigorous debate over this endorsement. Our discussion repeatedly circled back to the nation’s single most important challenge: pulling the economy out of the doldrums, getting more Americans back in the workforce in meaningful jobs with promising futures, and getting the federal government on a track to balance the budget in a bipartisan manner that the country demands.
Which candidate could forge the compromises in Congress to achieve these goals? When the question is framed in those terms, Mitt Romney emerges the stronger candidate.

It’s the first time they’ve endorsed a Republican in 40 years.

UPDATE V: Notorious partisan cheerleader polling expert Nate Silver just went all-in, raising Obama’s chances of re-election to 74.4%.
