Raised during the Cold War — when my uncles and cousins and neighbors were fighting the Viet Cong and the NVA, when American troops stood on guard against that doomsday moment when the Red Army decided to make a try for the Fulda Gap, when any blink of an eye might bring down a worldwide thermonuclear Armaggedon upon us — I developed a profound loathing of communism.

It was a highlight of my journalism career when the news came across the wire that former CPUSA chairman Gus Hall had died, and it was my honor to write his obituary, thus bringing good news to the world because, as every patriotic red-blooded American knows, the only good Commie is a dead Commie.

Has such a perspective become archaic or obsolete, merely because the Soviet Union collapsed into the ash-heap of history 20 years ago? Or, as I think, is it important to remember the deadly evil that Marx and Lenin unleashed upon mankind, and to stand eternally vigilant against any prospect of its recrudescence?

You may disagree with my belief that the Red Menace is still a specter that haunts us, and if you disagree, you probably don’t share my opinion that the Occupy movement represents a new iteration that menace. I understand this and so, when I denounce the Occupiers as “Commies,” it is both a serious indictment of their leftist worldview and a self-conscious jest, satirically invoking the old Cold War mentality toward beatniks and hippies and other such pinko Bolshevik sympathizers.

#Occupy St. Patrick’s Day: The Wearing of the Green and the Clearing of the Scum UPDATE: Did ‘Police Brutality Victim’ Cecily McMillan Attack Policeman?

St. Patrick’s Day, like New Year’s Eve, is one of those occasions when I carefully avoid alcohol because I refuse to drink with amateurs. But for many Americans, St. Patrick’s Day is a festive occasion celebrated with drunken revelry. Now imagine you’re a New York cop, looking forward to a Saturday night of green beer with your buddies, and you find out instead you’ve been assigned weekend overtime duty because a bunch of Commie freaks have decided to have a protest:

Scores of Occupy Wall Street protesters were arrested on Saturday night as police officers swept Zuccotti Park in Lower Manhattan and closed it.
Dozens of demonstrators sat down and locked arms as officers moved in about 11:30 p.m. The protesters chanted “we are not afraid” as the police began pulling people from the crowd, one by one, and leading them out of the park in handcuffs. . . .

(“We are not afraid”? By God, if they’re not, they should be. C’mon, NYPD, strike some fear in their hearts!)

The operation occurred after hundreds of people had gathered in the financial district to observe the founding of Occupy Wall Street six months ago. . . .
By 11:30 p.m., as police officers massed on Broadway, a commander announced that the park was closed. Those inside shouted back that the park was obliged through an agreement with the city to remain open. The commander then announced that anyone who remained inside would be arrested and charged with trespassing. . . .

(Whose streets? NYPD’s streets! You’ve been warned, Commies!)

By 12:20 a.m., a line of officers pushed against some of the remaining protesters, forcing them south on Broadway, at times swinging batons and shoving people to the ground.
Kobi Skolnick, 30, said that officers pushed him in several directions and that as he tried to walk away, he was struck from behind in the neck. “One of the police ran and hit me with a baton,” he said.

That’s the way to do it, NYPD! Give ’em a sweet taste of the nightstick!

But doesn’t NYPD have tasers? Jack ’em up with some high voltage!

Billy clubs, tasers, pepper spray, whatever it takes to keep Marxist scum off the streets of New York, do it. These whiny deadbeats are a menace to public safety — scabies! tuberculosis! rape! — and if they refuse to disperse peacefully, they have thereby declared war on the law-abiding citizens of New York, whom the NYPD are sworn to protect and serve.

There are reports that a handful of Occupy protesters were hospitalized with injuries. Unfortunately, it was only a handful, and none of those injuries were wounds from 9mm pistols or 12-gauge riot guns.

UPDATE: The Occupiers have claimed that one of their members, Cecily McMillan was the victim of police brutality. Sooper Mexican has details — including video — that appear to contradict that narrative:

Take a look at the video yourself. She clearly throws a nasty elbow at the cop next to her.

Read the whole Sooper Mexican post, as he has unearthed some interesting background on this left-wing protest pest, including her pride in being the grand-daughter of a founding member of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), the organization responsible for the infamous Chicago “Days of Rage” riot.

UPDATE II: Where does the Occupy movement end and the liberal media begin? Sometimes it’s hard to tell. The NY Observer‘s Steve Huff:

Cecily McMillan, an Occupy Wall Street activist once profiled in Rolling Stone, suffered a seizure Saturday night during protest action near Zuccotti Park. Many on-scene reported Ms. McMillan had trouble breathing after she was tackled and handcuffed by law enforcement.

Is it your job, Mr. Huff, to publicize the tendentious propaganda claims of the Occupy movement? At this point it appears Ms. McMillan attacked a policeman prior to her arrest and that, whatever her medical condition may be, her arrest was an entirely lawful response by NYPD officers.

So, Mr. Huff: Why is the NY Observer paying you to promote these potentially phony victimhood claims on Ms. McMillan’s behalf? Are the Observer‘s editors, publisher and advertisers down with what would appear to be your pro-Occupy anti-cop agenda?

She continued, “It’s been time for another surge from the bottom for quite a while, and some of us have been waiting.”

What these Commies misunderstand, perhaps deliberately, is that the origin of the surge isn’t what’s important. Rather, the direction. As I was saying the other day, people like Piven are about power. The talk of money, itself, is mis-direction. It isn’t as though the Left is doing anything at all without piles of cash.

The direction that is of consequence is liberty. Those trying to use emotional means on groups of people are, unexpectedly, all about power, and never about liberty. Liberty is the litmus test for just about everything the Ruling Class and their useful academic tools like Piven have to say. Anybody not discussing individual liberty is truly surging from their bottom.

Sure, it’s served as a jape, but consider: given the anti-American and anti-Constitutional blather as has come from #OccupyResoluteDesk these three years, why does anyone think he’d stop at two terms?

The thesis of this presidency seems to be that America is done, and he’s here to stick a fork in it. Maybe BHO’s creepy support for Mel Zelaya in ’09 was an early tell. If, per PJ O’Rourke, 2010 was not an election, but rather a restraining order, then 2012 is an impeachment:

Was Rick Santorum exaggerating when he accused Fox News of having a pro-Romney bias? We report, you decide: The “fair and balanced” network doesn’t have him scheduled for any interviews today. Family Outing at Antietam Battlefield

President O’Bama celebrated St. Patrick’s Day at the Dubliner in D.C., but the unseasonably warm spring day took our family to Antietam National Battlefield Park, scene of The Battle of Sharpsburg.

Reagan, 9, and Emerson, 11, have a laugh at the expense of Yankee Gen. Ambrose Burnside, who was ordered to cross Antietam Creek and got it into his head that the only way to do this was by capturing the bridge. Burnside’s folly cost his IX Corps hundreds of casualties and four crucial hours, as some 500 Confederates held off more than 5,000 Union troops. In his memoir I Rode With Stonewall, Confederate officer Henry Kyd Douglas, a native of Sharpsburg, wrote of the creek: “Go and look at it, and tell me if you don’t think Burnside and his corps might have executed a hop, skip, and jump and landed on the other side. One thing is certain, they might have waded it that day without getting their waist belts wet in any place.”
