Jonah Goldberg On Voter ID

Jonah Goldberg explores among the more egregious examples of Lefty doublethink:
Republicans across the country are pushing for voter I.D. laws. They want to limit the frequency and opportunities for voter fraud. Democrats claim, reasonably perhaps, that Republicans are making a bigger deal out of voter fraud than the evidence supports. Attorney General Eric Holder, who recently blocked Texas’ voter I.D. reforms, calls the movement a “solution to a problem that doesn’t exist.”
Right or wrong, that’s a claim worth investigating and debating. But unfortunately, for whatever reason, that argument isn’t working as a political tool. So he and others ascribe racism to those who want to add voting to the long list of things that require a photo I.D. Everywhere you look or listen, you hear about the return of Jim Crow these days. Left-wing activist groups have started using the twitter hashtag #waronvoting. Al Sharpton has gotten all riled up. The chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee has said that Republicans “want to literally drag us all the way back to Jim Crow laws.” Neo-segregation, it seems, is bursting out all over the place.
Never mind that there’s little evidence that photo I.D. requirements suppress turnout. Indeed, turnout in states has increased after requirements have been implemented (though I’m not one of those people who thinks turnout in and of itself is a good thing). In Indiana and Georgia, as the Wall Street Journal recently noted, lawsuits from the usual liberal legal chop shops were thrown out when they couldn’t produce a single person who’d actually been denied the right to vote by the I.D. rules. The upshot being that this bears no resemblance whatsoever to Jim Crow, which was about far more than just voting anyway. Oh, and don’t forget that the accusation of racism is a disgusting, gutter-level, smear designed to bully people where persuasion hasn’t even been tried.
Read the whole thing. There really isn’t much to add, except to wonder just how much of the Progressive decay of our society is already attributable to the Left tampering with elections. That’s sort of a cost-free speculation on my part, but the fundamental point is this: our elections have got to be strengthened. More people have to educate themselves and participate in politics. We cannot permit the Left to complete its demolition of our electoral system.

I Never Heard of a ‘Fair Fight’
Posted on | March 19, 2012 | 17 Comments
Have you ever been sucker-punched or kicked in the head? I have.
These are not experiences I would recommend to anyone, although such experiences can be quite valuable life lessons. When you’re in a fight that begins when somebody punches you without warning and if, during the course of such a fight your assailant then kicks you in the head, you understand that rules of “fairness” are not universally recognized.
When somebody is determined to whup your ass, without regard to any concern for what is “fair,” you must recognize that the only alternative is to whup his ass by whatever means or methods are available.
Jeff Goldstein ponders the progressive “morality” of Stanley Fish and, of course, the only morality Fish recognizes is the Triumph of Progressivism.
This is what Amy Alkon discovered when the Left tried to destroy her career: The radicalism described in Herbert Marcuse’s notorious 1965 essay “Repressive Tolerance” is now almost universally embraced by the Democratic Party and its supporters. These are not your father’s Democrats.
Anyone who thinks today’s Democrats are interested in “compromise” or “bipartisanship,” is a fool. You cannot negotiate with them. You cannot expect fairness from them. You can either defeat them, or else be subjected to their absolute authority.
Palin Documentary Director Stephen Bannon Announced as Breitbart Chairman
Posted on | March 19, 2012 | 5 Comments
Stephen K. Bannon, who directed the Sarah Palin documentary The Undefeated, has been named executive chairman of the board of Breitbart LLC, the conservative New Media company announced today. The parent company of Breitbart.com also announced that Larry Solov, an attorney and longtime friend of the late Andrew Breitbart, has been named as CEO and President.
“Andrew and I were like brothers our whole lives and have been business partners since 2007,” Solov said in a press statement (full text below). “Steve was a great friend of Andrew’s and has been there the last several years helping us build Breitbart News. Andrew possessed a very specific vision of what he wanted the company to become. Steve and I share that vision, which we will pursue relentlessly.”
Bannon praised the company’s founder for his “unique visionary leadership,” and vowed “to pick up his torch and forge ahead.” The company also made official announcements of a number of other top management positions at Breitbart.com: Joel Pollak as editor-in-chief, Alex Marlow as managing editor and Ben Shapiro as editor-at-large. We Must Support Our Attorney General

This blog wholeheartedly concurs with the Attorney General. If the immature, irresponsible attitude about firearms is allowed to spiral out of control, our citizenry may be reduced to looking for rounds in all the wrong places:
In the finest spirit of “nutrition is not a private matter” Holder behaves as though gun violence is a problem that the government should combat through propaganda means. Existing laws don’t matter. The various weapon safety courses offered by, for example, the NRA? Why mention that?
Rolling forward 15 years, and we’re in the middle of Fast & Furious. Now, I’m confident that Holder has a signed pardon #OccupyResoluteDesk in a safe already, just to keep things simple, and give him the confidence to emit his verbal flatus into the Congressional record. However, given Holder’s record and this clip, I don’t think that there is any shred of ambiguity remaining that Holder is an enemy of the Constitution and all we hold dear.
Holder is so atrocious that I think it’s a feature that he hold on until the end. He makes a far better albatross than he would a symbol of defeat at this stage. We should support our Attorney General by continuing to point and laugh at him while he adds to the drag coefficient of the Administration.

One Thousand Miles to Drive
Posted on | March 18, 2012 | 11 Comments
Rick Santorum will be in Mandeville, Louisiana, at 12:30 p.m. CDT Wednesday, and that’s more than a thousand miles from here.
Google Maps says it’s an 17-hour drive, so if I left Tuesday evening and drove straight through, I’d arrive in time: Exhausted beyond words, yes, but in time.
This would be completely crazy, but I’ve done crazier things.
Romney won Puerto Rico, and Illinois votes Tuesday. Certainly Santorum made news with this prediction Saturday:
Rick Santorum told crowds in Illinois’s conservative downstate that a victory Tuesday would be the key to his nomination.
“This is a pledge,” he said Saturday afternoon. “If we’re able to come out of Illinois with a huge or surprise win, I guarantee you — I guarantee that we will win this nomination. We will nominate a conservative, and we will beat Barack Obama.”
Pat Austin blogged about Santorum’s Sunday in Shreveport. I figure Louisiana’s primary on Saturday will be decisive one way or another. If Santorum wins, he’s definitely the last man standing against Romney and Gingrich is done. If Gingrich wins, he has an excuse to keep going. If Romney wins . . .
Perish the thought. But I plan to be there when the deal goes down.
Guess Who Loves Him Some Cable Porn?

James Wolcott praises “the porn that can be the only source of solace on those lonely nights away from the aggravations of home.”
Obviously, this is why Vanity Fair pays him the big bucks: To tell us what he does in his spare time. But you probably suspected this, didn’t you?
Apologies to readers disturbed by the mental image of a sweaty Wolcott in his undershorts getting his jollies watching pay-per-view cable.
