Obama Beats the Hurricane?

Posted on | August 29, 2011 | 9 Comments

He saved America!

“I want people to understand that this is not over,” President Barack Obama said Sunday evening from Washington. “The impacts of this storm will be felt for some time, and the recovery effort will last for weeks or longer.”

Wait — “not over”? But by the time it finally came ashore in New Jersey, it wasn’t even a hurricane anymore:

It was raining in Manhattan on Sunday morning, and the dogged correspondents in their brightly colored windbreakers were getting wet.
But the apocalypse that cable television had been trumpeting had failed to materialize. And at 9 a.m., you could almost hear the air come out of the media’s hot-air balloon of constant coverage when Hurricane Irene was downgraded to a tropical storm.
Not everyone was willing to accept this turn of events. When the Weather Channel’s Brian Norcross told MSNBC that forecasters had been expecting the first hurricane to make landfall in New York City since 1893 — “and it didn’t happen”anchor Alex Witt was openly skeptical.
“Really, Brian?” she asked.
Hadn’t Irene technically still been a hurricane when it came ashore in New York an hour earlier? “Can’t we still go with that?”
No, Norcross said.

Now do you see what all that TV hurricane hype was about? Global warming causes a hurricane to hit New York City — a horrific, historic disaster — and then Obama triumphantly leads the relief effort. It was a Hollywood-perfect narrative arc.

Unfortunately, the storm didn’t cooperate:

The three-day count of deaths related to the storm rose to at least 16 in six states . . .

The category “storm-related deaths” is quite flexible — at least one of them was a guy who had a heart attack while working to nail boards over his windows. And then there was that Florida surfer . . .

Well, dead is dead. But 16 deaths? Every year, more than 30,000 Americans are killed in auto accidents — nearly 100 a day on average. And the world-historic cataclysm requiring a “recovery effort [that] will last for weeks or longer”? Give me a freaking break.

The Pagan Temple observed last week that my choice of Rihanna pics for one of the “Live At Five” posts was less than optimal, and posted what he felt was a better one. Judge for yourself, and enjoy the video. Randy’s Roundtable has the incandescent Tamarra Hey and Holly Weber, and the eye of Polyphemus lights this week on Miranda Kerr. The Rio Norte Line picks up the slack in the SF babe department with Sucker Punch‘s Jamie Chung, while the Pegu Blog returns after a long absence with a little something for the ladies. Over at Reaganite Republican, it’s the second installment of Hot Romanian Chicks – and yes, I know Stacy already did a post on it, but it’s in my in-box and I’m linking it.

A View From The Beach has Milla Jovovich (did you know she has a singing career?) and Kate Winslet – Live Action Heroine! Jake Finnegan’s Burkalesque Babe this week is Katy Perry, and Dustbury this week features Vicky Leandros and Florence Welch of Florence And The Machine.

Soylent Green kicks off the week with Morena Corwin as the Monday Motivationer, provides some titillation on Tuesday, Jessica Burciaga on Hump Day, something about physicals on Thursday, the justly celebrated Corset Friday, and a greeting to Russian Go(oglers).

Proof Positive this week has Clair Cooper, Vintage Babe Yvonne Furneaux, and Miss Turkey in the weekly “Sex In Advertising” feature.

The Camp of the Saints directs our attention to Carla Ossa, who is indeed awesome; also, the Rule 5 News and Carol Ficatier. Maggie’s Notebook observes the passing of Tropical Storm Irene by posting a lot of Olivia Munn in swimwear. Very nice.

The DaleyGator’s DaleyBabes this week include Halle Berry, Catherine Oxenburg, Jamie Alexander, nude Ukrainian feminists, Asian Babe Wednesday, Katerina Graham, Autumn Reeser, and Piper Perabo

We had several late submissions this week; normally I would have gone ahead and done them, but this isn’t a normal weekend. Avoid being held over until mid-September and get your Rule 5 links in to Rule 5 Wombat by September 3; PLEASE do not copy these to my regular mailbox! Thanks to all of you who got your linkagery to me on time. 🙂

Al Gore: If You Disagree With Me About Global Warming … RAAAAACIST!

Posted on | August 28, 2011 | 14 Comments

Could he possibly get more pathetic than this?

When Bogusky questioned the analogy, asking if the scientific reasoning behind climate change skeptics might throw a wrench into the good and evil comparison with racism, Gore did not back down.
“I think it’s the same where the moral component is concerned and where the facts are concerned I think it is important to get that out there, absolutely,” Gore said.

Sister Toldjah says “the science, no matter what Al Gore says, is far from settled and that we should avoid implementing sweeping policies until we know much, much more. By which time, I suspect, we’ll recognize them for the poisonous cures to a problem that does not exist that they are and can toss them onto the intellectual trash heap with the ‘flat earth’ theories and Piltdown Man.”

In Fairness to Ace …

Posted on | August 28, 2011 | 63 Comments

. . . having decided to side with Pamela Geller in her dispute with Ace over Rick Perry, I am nevertheless obliged to say Pamela struck a low blow in blogging about her allegation that Ace publicly referred to her (offline and in person) as “Atlas Juggs.”

Ace strenuously denies this.

In general, ladies: Don’t ever do that to a guy. And by “that,” I mean casually slinging accusations of sexual harassment. You can file a lawsuit or call the cops or have your boyfriend punch somebody in the nose, but whatever you do, don’t use such accusations as a weapon of personal revenge. I very much empathize with Ace’s indignation at having his character impugned. No argument over mere politics is worth that kind of bad mojo.

It’s bad enough to have my friends at war with one another. It’s worse when they make it personal. Nobody ever asks my advice about this stuff, and nobody ever listens to my advice when I volunteer it, so I cannot be blamed for anyone’s errors but my own.

As to the present unpleasantness, I blame Rick Perry.

Or maybe Grover Norquist.

UPDATE: But having said that . . . I talked to both Ace and Pamela about this fight, and don’t know what can be done to end it. The problem is that someone seems to have issued a Prime Directive: Destroy any conservative who criticizes Rick Perry.

I exaggerate only slightly. There is a lot of pressure being brought against Perry’s critics. The governor of Texas is being sold as All That and a Stack of Pancakes, and anyone who isn’t buying the product is automatically accused of disloyalty or bad judgment.

There have been only a comparative handful of people in the conservative blogosphere — Michelle Malkin’s name leads the list — who have criticized Perry, and you might think that Team Perry would be content to ignore the criticism. But they seem very defensive, and this defensiveness results in harsh attacks on Perry’s critics. I’m sure Malkin was understating matters when she said she’s “gotten heat for not falling in line with the latest GOP bandwagon.”

Judging by the blowback I’ve gotten, I know how viciously personal the attacks can be. Like I said: Nobody ever asks my advice, so it’s not my fault what other people do.

Question: Who’s working on Perry’s campaign? Who are his consultants and top operatives? Because somebody needs to tell them to back the hell off.

UPDATE II: Lisa Graas adds her two cents, offering as the solution to the problem — you guessed, didn’t you? — Rick Santorum. And in all fairness, if what you want in a GOP candidate is a tough stance against the Religion of Peace, Santorum’s worth a look.

Catastrophic Damage

Posted on | August 28, 2011 | 47 Comments

No, I’m not talking about Hurricane Irene, although the storm has turned cable TV news into an endless, boring hype-a-thon, which I consider catastrophic. Joe Biden went golfing before the storm hit, which I consider about the most useful thing Biden could do in any crisis.

Neither am I talking about the catastrophic damage that Irene did to the global-warming scaremongers by failing to live up to the pre-landfall hype. New York Times writer Justin Gillis gives away the game:

The scale of Hurricane Irene, which could cause more extensive damage along the Eastern Seaboard than any storm in decades, is reviving an old question: are hurricanes getting worse because of human-induced climate change?

See? Like hurricane cheerleader James Wolcott, Gillis and other liberals wanted Irene to be a disastrous cataclysm of historic proportions — “Katrina Does Manhattan” — so they could claim it as evidence of their pet theory.  And this morning, a couple hours after the storm made landfall near Atlantic City, N.J., as I watched MSNBC, the anchorette was blabbing about the monster hurricane in an interview with a meteorologist who interrupted her to say: “Uh, tropical storm.”

The meterologist then explained that for Irene to be a Category 1 hurricane would require winds of 75 mph and . . . nope.

Irene may have been Category 1 before it came ashore, but it quickly dropped its windspeed after making landfall so that what hit New York City was, in fact, a mere tropical storm.

F–k you, global-warming hysterics. Read more

Given all the flood damage from Hurricane Irene, what’s the over-under on the amount of stimulus for the Northeast that the good President will call for in his Great Big Cure-What-Ails-You Speech in September? I’m saying $350 billion. Is that a sufficiently big number? We’re all surfers of economic fantasy now, For The Win. What say you?
