Jim Moran: ‘Raaaaacism!’

Posted on | January 27, 2011 | 16 Comments

Smitty’s in Kabul, so it’s my job to keep you informed of the embarrassing shenanigans of his congresstool:

Speaking to Arab television network Alhurra, Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.) said Republicans made big gains in November in part because “a lot of people in this country … don’t want to be governed by an African-American.”
Even more objectionable to some Americans, he said, is that Obama is a black president “who is inclusive, who is liberal, who wants to spend money on everyone and who wants to reach out to include everyone in our society — that’s a basic philosophical clash.”
Moran’s remarks came Tuesday in an interview conducted after Obama delivered his State of the Union speech. Democrats, Moran said, lost for “the same reason the Civil War Happened in the United States … the Southern states, particularly the slaveholding states, didn’t want to see a president who was opposed to slavery.”

8-Year-Old Girl Raped by Illegal Alien

Posted on | January 27, 2011 | 25 Comments

Front page of today’s Washington Post:

Salvador Portillo-Saravia, a member of the MS-13 street gang, was charged with raping an 8-year-old girl at her Fairfax County home last month. But he never should have been in Fairfax in the first place.
Federal officials deported Portillo-Saravia, of Sterling, to El Salvador in 2003, and he sneaked back in illegally. Now, officials are wondering why a much-touted federal program didn’t catch him before the rape.
Four weeks before the crime, Portillo-Saravia was in the Loudoun County jail for public intoxication. That’s when the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) program, called Secure Communities, should have identified him as an illegal immigrant and he should have been taken into custody.
Loudoun authorities ran Portillo-Saravia’s fingerprints through a federal database, but despite the 2003 deportation, nothing was found. He was released after 12 hours behind bars.
Portillo-Saravia, 29, is now the subject of a manhunt by local police and federal marshals.

Another example of how the federal “catch-and-release” illegal-alien policy endangers everyone.

Egyptian Regime Unraveling?

Posted on | January 27, 2011 | 21 Comments

You know, I seem to remember a U.S. president who had this crazy idea that overthrowing Saddam Hussein might help encourage the spread of democracy in the Mideast:

Police fought protesters in two cities in eastern Egypt on Thursday and Nobel Peace Prize winner Mohamed ElBaradei arrived back in the country to join a major demonstration on Friday to try to oust President Hosni Mubarak.
Security forces shot dead a Bedouin protester in the north of Egypt’s Sinai region on Thursday, bringing the death toll to five on the third day of protests inspired by unrest which toppled Tunisia’s president earlier this month.
In a sign open defiance against authoritarian rulers was spreading, police also clashed with protesters in the Arabian Peninsula state of Yemen and Gabon in West Africa.

Major protests are planned Friday:

Of course, we cannot automatically congratulate ourselves about what wonders “democracy” would bring to Egypt, as this revolutionary moment might lead to the empowerment of Islamist radicals. Mubarak is authoritarian, but I don’t know that the average Egyptian in 2011 is any more enlightened than the average Frenchman in 1789.

“The effect of liberty to individuals is that they may do what they please; we ought to see what it will please them to do, before we risk congratulations which may be soon turned into complaints.”

No, Smitty Did Not Write a Novel

Posted on | January 27, 2011 | 6 Comments

This headline could be unfortunately misleading:

Revealed: Former McCain Aide Is
Anonymous Author of ‘O: A Presidential Novel’

No, it wasn’t our loyal co-blogger, but rather a former aide to Senator John McCain who has been identified:

It was obvious from skimming ‘O: A Presidential Novel,’ written by anonymous and published Tuesday after an intense publicity campaign, that its author was male, on the political center-right, and not a professional writer. The writing lacked the finesse of a pro, described women in vivid physical terms, and imagined for the president a disdain for liberal Democrats that echoed the way conservatives talk about liberals, rather than the way reporters or mainstream Democrats do.

While he certainly has a “disdain for liberal Democrats,” Smitty has never “described women in vivid physical terms.” That’s my job.

Health Care and the ‘N-Word’

Posted on | January 27, 2011 | 13 Comments

Last week, when I did a post about efforts to promote state nullification of ObamaCare, my friend Ali Akbar joked on Twitter that I was using the “n-word,” but now apparently nullification is the latest rage:

BOISE, Idaho — Republican lawmakers in nearly a dozen states are reaching into the dusty annals of American history to fight President Obama’s health care overhaul.
They are introducing measures that hinge on “nullification,” Thomas Jefferson’s late 18th-century doctrine that purported to give states the ultimate say in constitutional matters.
GOP lawmakers introduced such a measure Wednesday in the Idaho House, and Alabama, Kansas, Maine, Missouri, Montana, Oregon, Nebraska, Texas and Wyoming are also talking about the idea. . . .

You can read the whole thing. Professor Thomas Woods’s recent book Nullification has helped promote this trend, but the Associated Press didn’t find him worth quoting, instead relying on anti-nullification sources who derogate the authority of states to defend the liberty of their citizens. Certainly the revival of interest in this doctrine — first promulgated by Jefferson and Madison in the Virginia and Kentucky resolutions — is a testimony to the depth of opposition to ObamaCare.

UPDATE: Via Red State Eclectic, here’s video of Professor Woods discussing the recent controversy in Idaho:

Labor Department Blames Snow for Increase in Weekly Unemployment

Posted on | January 27, 2011 | 8 Comments

It’s kind of a dog-ate-my-homework excuse:

More Americans than forecast filed first-time claims for unemployment insurance payments last week, indicating it will take time for the labor market to mend.
Applications for jobless benefits increased by 51,000 to 454,000 in the week ended Jan. 22, Labor Department figures showed today. Economists forecast 405,000 claims, according to the median estimate in a Bloomberg News survey. The number of people on unemployment benefit rolls rose, while those collecting extended payments fell.
A Labor Department official said snow in four southern states in previous weeks created a backlog of claims that were processed last week. . .

Really? Are we supposed to believe that?
