Labor Department Blames Snow for Increase in Weekly Unemployment
Posted on | January 27, 2011 | 8 Comments
It’s kind of a dog-ate-my-homework excuse:
More Americans than forecast filed first-time claims for unemployment insurance payments last week, indicating it will take time for the labor market to mend.
Applications for jobless benefits increased by 51,000 to 454,000 in the week ended Jan. 22, Labor Department figures showed today. Economists forecast 405,000 claims, according to the median estimate in a Bloomberg News survey. The number of people on unemployment benefit rolls rose, while those collecting extended payments fell.
A Labor Department official said snow in four southern states in previous weeks created a backlog of claims that were processed last week. . .
Really? Are we supposed to believe that?

America, the Doomed

Thank you, Democrats, for creating the Ponzi scheme that will bankrupt our nation:
Sick and getting sicker, Social Security will run at a deficit this year and keep on running in the red until its trust funds are drained by about 2037, congressional budget experts said Wednesday in bleaker-than-previous estimates.
The massive retirement program has been suffering from the effects of the struggling economy for several years. It first went into deficit last year but had been projected to post surpluses for a few more years before permanently slipping into the red in 2016
This year alone, Social Security will pay out $45 billion more in retirement, disability and survivors’ benefits than it collects in payroll taxes, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said. That figure nearly triples — to $130 billion — when the new one-year cut in payroll taxes is included. . . .

Police Say Texas Man Strangled His Children’s 15-Year-Old Babysitter

Nancy Grace featured this story tonight:
A body found near Lubbock, Texas, has been identified as that of a baby sitter seen in a motel surveillance video with a man charged in the case, authorities said Wednesday.
The medical examiner identified the remains found Monday about seven miles outside of the city as belonging to Elizabeth Ennen, 15. She had been strangled, Capt. Greg Stevens told CNN.
Stevens told reporters that Humberto Salinas Jr., 45, was being held on a $250,000 bond on an aggravated kidnapping charge. Police are talking with the district attorney about taking a murder charge to the grand jury, he said.
Elizabeth was reported missing after baby-sitting at a motel for Salinas, who was a friend of the Ennen family and the father of her boyfriend, police said.
Salinas had a history of violent crime dating back to 1986, but Elizabeth Ennen’s family knew nothing about his criminal past. Here’s news video from a local TV station:
Snowed In!

STAUNTON, Virginia
My plan to make it back home tonight got changed by the snowstorm. After I got north of Lexington, driving conditions on I-81 deteriorated rapidly. I called my wife, who suggested I get off the road and check into a motel. The place by the interstate was full up, but the clerk offered to call around and see if she could find me a room elsewhere. Turns out I was in luck, and there was a vacancy in a place downtown . . .
Yes, it’s the historic Stonewall Jackson Hotel. Just a fluke, but I’m sure the Southern Poverty Law Center will find a way to portray this as part of a neo-Confederate conspiracy.
The room is $130. Please hit the tip jar.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Diplomacy triumphed here Tuesday night, as Professor Glenn Reynolds and Robert Stacy McCain agreed to a treaty hailed as the greatest achievement for world peace since the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact of 1939.
The treaty was reached after hours of strenuous negotiations at Calhoun’s BBQ on Kingston Pike. The specific terms of the agreement were not immediately made public, but afterwards McCain declared, “I have no new territorial demands in the blogosphere.”
