Suicide Bomb at Moscow Airport
Posted on | January 24, 2011 | 30 Comments
At least 31 people were killed and more than 100 injured on Monday in a suicide bombing at Russia’s biggest airport, Russian news agencies reported.
Security is oriented towards keeping bombs off planes, but almost none at all is directed at keeping bombs out of the airports themselves, where all those people are bunched up together.
UPDATE: Reuters via CNBC:
Russian President Dmitry Medvedev vowed to track down and punish those behind a suicide bomb attack which killed at least 31 people and injured over 100 others at Russia’s biggest airport.
“Security will be strengthened at large transport hubs,” Medvedev wrote on Twitter.
“We mourn the victims of the terrorist attack at Domodedovo airport. The organizers will be tracked down and punished,” he said.
The NYTimes report doesn’t even bother to mention how Russia has been plagued by Islamic jihadist attacks.
This attack may be yet more terrorism by the jihadis waging war against Russia in Chechnya.
UPDATE II: Ed Morrissey is following the story and has this from Asssociated Press:
Domodedovo is generally regarded as Moscow’s most up-to-date airport, but its security procedures have been called into question.
In 2004, two suicide bombers were able to board planes at Domodedovo by buying tickets illegally from airport personnel. The bombers blew themselves up in mid-air, killing all 90 people aboard the two flights.
BTW, at this point, it isn’t certain whether this was a suicide bomber or whether the bomb was hidden in luggage.
VIDEO: British Girl, 13, Says Rape Threats Are ‘Happening to Lots of Girls’ at School
Posted on | January 24, 2011 | 16 Comments
In November, we reported on the shocking story of Muslim rape gangs terrorizing girls in Great Britain Now, Eric Dondero at Libertarian Republican has this video interview with a 13-year-old girl — whose accent indicates she’s from northern England — talking about the intimidation she faces at school:
When she reports threats from fellw students to school officials, she says, the boys get no worse punishment than 15 days’ suspension. And, she says, young men are hanging around outside school “every day” trying to pick up girls. Recent headlines in England have been full of similarly lurid tales:
- ‘I Was Gang Raped by 5 Asians at the Age of 12’
- ‘I Was Kept Prisoner by the Asian Sex Gang Predator’
- No Schoolgirl Is Safe From These Asian Sex Gangs
- Nine Arrests in Police Sex Gang Probe
- Police Chief: ‘We Couldn’t Speak Out on Asian Sex Gangs for Fear of Appearing Institutionally Racist’
- Pakistani Men See White Girls as ‘Easy Meat,’ Claims Jack Straw
As you can see — and I’ve only sampled a few headlines from the past three weeks — the situation seems to be quite alarming. It’s hard to tell how much of this is media sensationalism, but it certainly doesn’t portend a hopeful prospect for multiculturalism in the U.K.

Obama’s State of the Union Preview
Posted on | January 24, 2011 | 5 Comments
Because I signed up for the Obama mailing list in 2008, this was actually e-mailed to me Saturday night but — I’m not kidding — it went to my “spam” folder:
From the presidential e-mail:
Two years ago, when I first addressed a joint session of Congress, this country faced a crisis unlike anything since the Great Depression — an economy that had spiraled out of control, putting millions out of work.
Today, we’re in a different place. An economy that was shrinking is now growing again. But across the country, millions are struggling every day — to find work, to pay their bills, to provide for their families.
It is clear that the moment we now face demands a vision for how we as a people will win the future.
And that vision — that agenda — will be the topic of my State of the Union address.
As the messengers, volunteers, and organizers of this movement, you will play a critical role in carrying out that agenda. Because of that, I want you to have an advance look at what I’ll ask of Congress on Tuesday. . . .
I will talk to the nation about how we can win the future by out-innovating, out-educating, and out-building the rest of the world. By dealing with our deficits and our debt in a responsible way, and reforming government so that it’s leaner and smarter for the 21st century. How we continue to keep America safe and advance our interests around the world.
But we can do it only if we all work together.
George Will has dismissed the State of the Union as a “pep rally.” Meanwhiile, the president’s predictable call for “investments” — nudge, nudge — got an equally predictable Republican response:
With Mr. Obama planning to call for “investments” of tax dollars in specific areas like education, infrastructure and technology, Republicans insisted that “investment” was just another name for spending that the nation can ill afford.
“With all due respect to our Democratic friends, any time they want to spend, they call it investment, so I think you will hear the president talk about investing a lot Tuesday night,” Senator Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader, said on “Fox News Sunday.” “This is not a time to be looking at pumping up government spending in very many areas.”
Mr. McConnell’s House counterpart, Representative Eric Cantor, said that his party would demand “deep spending cuts” in all areas and that the military, an area of the budget that Republicans ordinarily view as sacrosanct, would not be exempt. “Every dollar should be on the table,” Mr. Cantor said in an appearance on “Meet the Press” on NBC.
It’s kind of hard to get excited about such a predictable political show.
IT’S ALIVE!

The dreaded scourge of “liberaltarianism” — the heinous Cato Institute monster that first terrorized America in the waning years of the Bush era — has been revived, at least in the dope-addled mind of Will Wilkinson, who sees in the enthusiasms of Timothy B. Lee the spark to resurrect that nightmare.
It was Brink Lindsey who created that monster, evidently thinking that the No-Blood-for-Oil crowd might embrace it, and Wilkinson became entranced with “liberaltarianism,” no doubt in one of his cannabis-induced reveries. In 2009, Michael Moynihan declared the death of “liberaltarianism,” and last September there was a “purge” at Cato.
Wilkinson’s efforts to bring the monster back to life, however, got a sharp rebuke from Kevin Drum of Mother Jones. With a Democrat in the White House, the Left no longer has any need to play nice with the Cato types. Yet we see how persistent bad ideas can be, and these intellectual Mad Scientists won’t repent of their folly. Beware!

RULE 5 SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY!
Posted on | January 23, 2011 | 8 Comments
Well – welcome back to another Rule 5 roundup. We must of course begin with Soylent Green’s Corset Friday, because the Wombat likes to admire the scantily clad women in the corsets.
We welcome Doug of the Pegu Blog to the ways of Rule 5, and he starts off strong with a two-fisted look at Nikki Heat off “Castle” and for the ladies, some Nathan Fillion. Perhaps less tasteful is his examination of Ron Jeremy and his rum.
Mind-Numbed Robot peels himself away from his Sisyphean labors long enough to spot us some delectable Cheryl Cole Tweedy as well as a plethora of further Rule 5 linkagery. Go thence, drool, and click!
Washington Rebel brings back fond memories with this pic of Diana Rigg in her luscious prime, and follows Dame Diana up with Amber Heard and Anne Hathaway. Not to be outdone in the vintage department, Dustbury gives us Susanna Hoffs of the Bangles.
Appropriately enough, Boom3 brings us international femmes fatales Gwen Cooper and Xun Zhou. One with a gun, one without.
From The Camp of the Saints comes this link to Fran Gerard, more rule 5 linkagery, Dawn Richard, and June Blair.
In a first for Rule 5, DaleyGator offers us a slideshow of DaleyBabes.
Maggie’s Notebook shares some nice pix of Dana Perino, some of them with hunky soldier types.
Gahrie offers us a blast from the past with Tiffani-Amber Thiessen, who is clearly still smokin’ at 37.
Last but not least, Proof Positive brings us Stacy Keebler, Hedy Lamarr, and the Steampunk Palin cover. Ooookay.
Rule 5 submissions for next week should be sent to Rule 5 Wombat, preferably by Saturday.

Zombie Goes Kipling
Posted on | January 23, 2011 | 21 Comments
“Yes, part of me still would like to see Potemkin Villages, or perhaps ‘It’s a Small World’ living dioramas, of each and every ethnic culture on Earth, so as to preserve our species’ amazing diversity. But I also know that there is cruelty in such a fantasy; because real human beings will be compelled to live in these ethnographic exhibits, and must thereby endure real hardships for our intellectual amusement and to alleviate our Western guilt.”
— Zombie, “Human Rights Imperialism: Leftist Satire or Moral Collapse?”
Thus says the influential (and anonymous) documenter of left-wing insanity in response to a column in the Guardian by “former New York Times Bureau Chief and current anti-imperialist professor-activist Stephen Kinzer.”
The Guardian column is truly an amazing prodigy of intellectual contortionism. In response, Zombie quotes Kipling’s poem “The White Man’s Burden,” and examines the complex intellectual maneuvers by which the Left justifies its hatred of Western civilization, multiculturalism being one such maneuver.
We cannot remake the Third World in our own image. We cannot impose Jeffersonian democracy at the point of a bayonet, or suppose that Kabul can be converted overnight into Athens in the age of Pericles. Nevertheless, we cannot renounce our own civilization because others are unwilling to emulate it.
Liberals are embarrassed by the West’s superiority, which is why they embrace anything and everything that will drag us down into the mire.
