Polls, Robocalls, Snow, and Other Distractions in Massachusetts

FITCHBURG, Mass.
This afternoon, I was on the Ken Pittman show on WBSM in New Bedford and Fairhaven and the subject of the Tea Party movement came up. There can be no doubt that Tea Party activists — “far right teabaggers,” as Chuck Schumer calls them — are making a difference in Massachusetts. Think about that Vietnam veteran who drove 1,600 miles to volunteer for Brown — that’s the kind of people-powered activism that has energized the Scott Brown campaign.

Which kind of explains why I haven’t been sweating the polls the past few days. Who cares about polls, when I can talk to the people directly? Sunday at St. Anthony’s and on Huntington Avenue, I got a lot better feel for the trend of the campaign than Ross Douthat is ever going to get up there in his ivory tower.

We’ve had about a foot of snow here in Fitchburg today. There was another Scott Brown robocall here earlier today, with one of his daughters telling Da Tech Guy and his wife to make sure to vote, and just this very minute there was a live phone call with the same message. Obviously, the Brown GOTV operation is in high gear.

Speaking of high gear, Da Tech Guy and I have to hit the road for Boston to attend a pre-election meeting with bloggers and campaign operatives. Here are some photos to look at while we’re on the road.

Local dead-tree media coverage of the campaign.

Sicilian tradition requires that Da Tech Guy celebrates his Instalanche with pizza and lambrusco.

Employing his trademark Sicilian hand gesture, Da Tech Guy interviews Vietnam veteran Randy May.

Inside the lobby of the posh Park Plaza hotel in downtown Boston, Election Night HQ for the Scott Brown campaign and potential site of the Tuesday Ace-a-Palooza.

Garrett Quinn of the Red Mass Group blog, who has promised to buy all the beer Tuesday night and recruit local blog groupies for Ace.

I’m still worried about them trying to steal the election.

Keep us posted on that situation, if you see anything noteworthy.
