Who Warned Us About Brett Kimberlin?

Posted on | May 18, 2012 | 108 Comments

Less than six months before Andrew Breitbart died:

This was important, and Andrew Breitbart understood why it was important: The “TwitterGate” episode in October 2010 exposed Democrat operative Neal Rauhauser’s role in an apparent conspiracy to harass Tea Party activists online. Shortly thereafter, Mandy Nagy (aka “Liberty Chick”) documented Brett Kimberlin heinous criminal history.

Kimberlin and his “Velvet Revolution” partner Brad Friedman teamed up to urge Maryland authorities to prosecute James O’Keefe and Hannah Giles. At some point, according to Kimberlin, he became an “associate” of Rauhauser.

Now, investigative journalist Matthew Vadum has shown that major “progressive” tax-exempt foundations contributed tens of thousands of dollars to Kimberlin’s “Justice Through Music Project” and “Velvet Revolution” non-profits.

Money is fungible, as they say. The funding of Kimberlin’s projects — tens of thousands of dollars from the George Soros-connected Tides Foundation, as well as foundations associated with Barbra Streisand and Sen. John Kerry’s wife — thus supported all of Kimberlin’s activities, including his effort to have O’Keefe and Giles prosecuted for their ACORN takedown.

The association between Kimberlin, Friedman and Rauhauser inspires an obvious suspicion: Who is footing the bill for various online projects targeting leading conservative New Media activists?

Read Aaron Worthing’s account of being the target of Kimberlin’s attempted legal intimidation. Worthing’s offense? Apparently, being a former co-blogger with Patterico, who has written extensively about Kimberlin’s criminal record. Patterico has also been a target of Kimberlin.

Evidently, anyone who tells the truth about Brett Kimberlin is subject to this familar pattern of harassment and attempted intimidation.

Kimberlin is a notorious liar, who was convicted of perjury before he graduated high school and has been called a “world-class liar” by award-winning journalist Mark Singer. Just a few years after being released from federal prison, Kimberlin somehow managed to get funding from major donors and began passing himself off as an expert on “election reform,” becoming a favorite of the left-wing blogosphere by “repeatedly asserting as facts things that are not true,” as Time magazine’s Mssimo Calabresi wrote in 2007.

Now, it gets interesting: A site called “Breitbart Unmasked” has published a list of what it calls “The Breitbart Crew,” including everyone from Brent Bozell III to Dave Weigel of Slate.

Patterico and Worthing suspect “Breitbart Unmasked” and Brett Kimberlin are one and the same. On Twitter last night, @BreitbartUnmask denied being Brett Kimberlin, but it is curious to observe how people who tell the truth about Kimberlin become the subject of attacks from “Breitbart Unmasked.”

In 1981, Kimberlin was sentenced to 50 years in federal prison. But that was before “truth-in-sentencing” became law. He only did 17 years for his heinous crimes. A convicted terrorist who has been known to plot the murders of his enemies, including a federal prosecutor . . .

Names on a list?

Kind of what you might call a familiar modus operandi:

Brett C. Kimberlin schemed to elude justice with a series of bizarre plots designed to murder, maim and rob his enemies, create havoc . . . and discredit the chief government prosecutor. . . .
On sheets of yellow legal pad, Kimberlin asked another inmate in the Marion County Jail to arrange for the murder of Bernard L. (Buddy) Pylitt, the former first assistant U.S. attorney who coordinated his prosecution.
The offer contained a list of 10 names, including a potential prosecution witness, Robert Scott Bixler. Some names had crosses next to them. These indicated those marked for murder, it was learned. . . .

R. Joseph Gelarden, “Kimberlin case a maze of murder, deceit,” Indianapolis Star, Oct. 18, 1981

That article also mentions the July 29, 1978, murder of Julia Scyphers, the grandmother of a pre-teen girl toward whom, Gelarden wrote in 1981, Kimberlin had “strange affection . . . questionable relationship.” You might want to read the whole article. Given that Kimberlin has not pressed a libel action against the Indianapolis Star, we have no reason to doubt the accuracy of Gelarden’s reporting.

So far as I can discover, Brett Kimberlin has never admitted guilt for his crimes, nor has he ever apologized to those he harmed. Instead, he receives tens of thousands of dollars a year in funding from tax-exempt non-profit foundations.

Readers may ask: “What can I do?” One possible answer to this question is provided at the end of Aaron Worthing’s (very long) account of how he was harassed by Brett Kimberlin:

Second, you can write to the State’s Attorney of Montgomery County. I did not name the subordinate responsible for the inaction, but ultimately it is the responsibility of John McCarthy, the State’s Attorney himself. You might also consider writing to the Governor, or the Attorney General of Maryland. Be polite. You will not help me by being foul or insulting. Simply state that you believe a grave injustice has been done to me—if you happen to agree—and ask them politely to see to it that justice be done.

It is not the business of law enforcement authorities to mediate a personal squabble between Worthing and Kimberlin. Nor are officials interested in political controversies. However, this is not merely a personal dispute and it is not really about politics.

Brett Kimberlin is a notorious felon, convicted of multiple violent crimes, not to mention perjury, conspiracy and drug charges. His criminal record clearly indicates that Kimberlin is capable of unspeakable acts against those he designates as his enemies, including law enforcement officials. If Kimberlin is responsible for the “Breitbart Unmasked” operation, which is by all indications targeting those who tell the truth about Kimberlin’s criminal career, the possible implications — including the chance that this might incite criminal violence against targeted individuals — should seriously concern law enforcement authorities.

Andrew Breitbart tried to warn America, but we failed to pay attention to his warning. Is America paying attention now?

UPDATE: It takes an “Army of Breitbarts” to overcome the indifference, inertia and bias of the mainstream media. One blogger can accomplish little on his own, and I am therefore grateful to all those who have helped call attention to the Kimberlin case, including:

UPDATE II: I Own the World is paying attention.

UPDATE III: Aaron Worthing returns with a brief summary of his 28,000-word original post, which makes clear the following:

Regular readers of this site know that for some time the convicted domestic terrorist known as Brett Kimberlin has been harassing me. He did this because I dared to offer a bit of light, free legal help to a man he was suing named Seth Allen and then as he came after me, I told the truth about his deplorable criminal background and the fact he lied under oath in a hearing on November 14, 2011 and recommended that he be charged with perjury.

So this contradicts my earlier guess that Kimberlin targeted Worthing merely for being a Patterico associate. Exactly who Seth Allen is, or why Kimberlin was suing him, I don’t know. The point is that, so far as I know, Kimberlin’s only source of income is the grants he gets for his tax-exempt non-profit “charities,” which income he then uses to wage campaigns of smears, intimidation and harassment against anyone who criticizes him. Please read the rest of Aaron’s summary.

UPDATE IV: “What It Feels Like to Be Targeted.”

And there are folks who condemn me even though I have been punished for my crimes and have turned my life around. All I did was financial crimes not violent, deadly of potentially deadly. I deprived two banks of expected interest income and other greedy individuals of potential profits, never killed anyone nor maimed anyone or deprived them of life or liberty. But because I made these mistakes in the past, have formerly flouted the law I am not to be trusted but silenced! I still have an opinion and the legal right to be heard in the public square, to be freely linked to by others who agree with my opinion or present it as a counter-point. Thank God RDM, Smitty and Wombat appreciate that fact and (thank you a million times over) have, on occasion, linked to one of my posts (and even followed me on Twitter and/or Facebook) in the face of folks like Ann Barnhardt that send mass emails saying not to link to me, to send anything to me, comment on my posts or have anything to do with me. Assholes and unrepentant criminals like Kimberlin deserve to be exposed for what they are, to be hounded until they repent and are fully punished under the law. Like I was (anyone who has ever actually read my blog knows I exposed all my crimes and sin myself, confessing publicly. It still rankles, especially when I see idiots like Kimberlin getting thousands of dollars while continueing bad (and possibly illegal) activities while I scrape by with a few crusts of bread and moldy fruit, staying on the straight and narrow and still get blacklisted and marginalized.

The 990 is just…wrong. I’m seeing “contributions and grants” of $223,000, and not the slightest hint where that money  comes from. I’m seeing only two people listed as Directors, and one only does 1 hour’s work, and receives no compensation, yet he signs the return.

Kimberlin only receives $19,500 for 40 hours per week? Really?

There are so many questions. I simply do not find this 990 informative at all.

Well, whatever else can be said: that I-74/I-70 angle is certainly a very interesting place — with some rather interesting people; heck, both corridors are kinda fascinating…always forgotten about, always underestimated, but never boring.

  15. Dianna Deeley
    May 18th, 2012 @ 5:47 pm

Think of it this way: The proposals to the funders probably talked about very high minded goals, educating youth through music. Streisand’s foundation, in particular, would probably like that mission. Many boards are not particularly interested in the nitty-gritty – that’s the staff’s job, and if the staff does not research the board of the grantee, no one will realize who Kimberlin is. I’m not excusing the foundations – particularly not Tides, which certainly ought to have known better – but I do understand how it happened.

So far as I can see from the 990, it spends approximately $250,000 (2010 figures) to make and send DVD’s about youth voting rights.

The site has “Occupy Music”, if that helps?

No? Not surprised. I can’t make much of it, either, and I really should be prepping a meeting packet, not reading their 990 and searching their site.

Some of them don’t sleep at night they pass out (think about being married to John Kerry).
Liberals don’t have any conscience if they did they’d not be libruls, they don’t have any common sense either, they do how ever have publicity people. The elements of this story relating to nefarious schemes to silence conservatives will bother them not at all. However funding a terrorist without the cachet of a Bill Ayers might give some pause.

  20. Adobe_Walls
    May 18th, 2012 @ 7:29 pm

They don’t have any qualms about funding the bashing of conservatives either no matter how despicable the tactics, that’s why the angle to bash them with is that they are knowingly (or should know) funding a pedophilic murder with a penchant for pointless mayhem.

    Excellent post!

This sums up a hell of a lot of stuff in a concise and readable way.  It’s link dense, so people can explore more, but it really explains a lot.

Seth Allen is a liberal guy.  He’s outspoken and I suspect many Breitbart fans will find a lot to disagree with him about.  However, this is not really political, as RSM noted.  This is about a thug.

Seth realized that Brad Blog and Brett Kimberlin were not what they appeared to be, tried to explain this to other lefties so they would know before they donated, and this opened up lawfare WWIII.

Aaron didn’t care about the political differences he had from Seth.  He saw a guy who needed a little help, and gave it to him.  This entire roller coaster he’s been on started with that kindness.  Makes me sick to my stomach to think about it.

Your work exposing these matters is important, and you’ve done Andrew Breitbart proud.

Even if they did realize who Kimberlin was:  gritty, common man, pot dealing ex-con who claims to stand up to “The Man” through acts of “civil disobedience”, who used to own veggie restaurant (if I remember correctly), and the whole music angle…wants to help “the children” too (that’s something to ponder right there).

That’s like the grand slam of swamihood for those folks if you think about it.  A little recreate ’68 (which they all apparently hanker to do).
