AZ-7: Another Democrat in Trouble, Another Excellent GOP Challenger

Posted on | September 30, 2010 | 16 Comments

The rule of polling is, if the incumbent is under 50%, the incumbent is in trouble. By that measure, Democrat Rep. Raúl Grijalva — polling at an anemic 42% — is in serious trouble in Arizona’s 7th District:

Republican Ruth McClung is trailing Rep. Raúl Grijalva by seven points according to a poll done for her campaign and released Wednesday.
The poll, the only one released on the district so far, shows 42 percent said they support Grijalva in the Congressional race, while 35 percent support McClung. That left 23 percent of voters undecided. The District is composed of 142,283 registered Democrats, 75,437 registered Republicans, and 103,750 independent voters.
McClung’s campaign hailed the results in a news release, saying the race is “up for grabs.”
“It’s now clear that a huge percentage of the voters in CD7 are tired of Mr. Grijalva and his antics,” she said in the release, which noted he’s been re-elected with more than 60 percent of the vote in his past two election cycles.

“Voters are tired of politicians who put their own interests ahead of their constituents,” McClung said in the release. “Mr. Grijalva’s boycott of his home state, his failed economic policies and his indifference to the voters is catching up with him.”
Grijalva’s campaign did not immediately respond to the results.

A friend in Arizona who sent me that story in an e-mail says, “Ruth McClung is the real deal out of grassroots activism here in the desert. She’s an honest-to-God rocket scientist, fiscal conservative, pro SB 1070 candidate with strong Tea Party support.”

Yes, indeed, as she says in her official campaign biography, Ruth McClung is “a physicist who is currently working as a rocket scientist at a local engineering company.”

These Tea Party people, they’re all a bunch of dumb yahoos, y’see.

And, indeed, the incumbent Democrat called for a boycott of his own state because of Arizona’s new immigration-enforcement law.

Man, these Democrats are all about economic growth and jobs, jobs, jobs!

Now check out this awesome radio ad from Ruth McClung:

You know how Ace of Spades is so crazy about robot-building Sean Bielat? Yeah. Wait ’til Ace sees this one:

RUTH McCLUNG for CONGRESS
She’s a rocket scientist, and kinda cute, too

Seriously, people: This is exactly the kind of candidate we need to be supporting if we want to push back against the liberal media stereotype that Republican women are a bunch of dummies.

If you don’t give Ruth McClung $20 right now, I’m gonna tell my friend Christine O’Donnell to turn you into a newt.

Another candidate is Dan Benishek. He is running in Michigan for the Bart Stupak seat and is a doctor, but the DNC has been pouring money into the campaign of his opponent, so he is being out advertised 20-1 on TV. Too bad, too, because the people here-1st district-really felt betrayed by Bart Stupak, and Dan Benishek was a perfect candidate.

What is more interesting for me is not the gender fcator but that here we have a Republican politician who is a (rocket)scientist; a rare feat even for a male GOP candidate. That in itself is worthy–assuming she happens to be “pro-science” as well–of support from the science community who happen to vote largely democratic.

Rocket science is so twentieth century. I kicked off the twenty-first by working on the Space Elevator. (Dead serious.) Of course, I’m also helping out Major Double-Ivy Robot-Maker Barney-slayer, live next to Mike Stopa’s (nanotechnologist who ran a primary cmpaign against Jim McGovernment), so this thing seems sort of normal.

In fact, Tea Partiers (and talk radio listeners) are, statistically speaking, just like America, just smarter and with a better education.
