OK, Jimmie Bise, Steven Crowder and Fingers Malloy Are Smart, But . . . Girls?

All the ladybloggers are excited about Smart Girl Summit, which starts today at the fabulous Hyatt Regency in Arlington, Va.: Michelle Bachmann, Liz Cheney, Tammy Bruce, Anita Moncrief, Dana Loesch . . . I mean, wow, who wouldn’t be excited by such an all-star lineup of conservative women?

So I’m thinking, maybe I should write something about how all the ladybloggers are getting together for the big event, and I’m going down the conference schedule for Friday and . . . Hey, wait:

You see what I mean? This has become a disturbing pattern. It’s as if every time someone starts planning a major gathering of conservative bloggers, the planning process always begins with the same decision: “Whatever you do, don’t invite Stacy McCain.”

The first couple of times I got viciously snubbed like this, my friends assured me that I was just being oversensitive, perhaps even slightly paranoid. But it kept happening over and over, at conference after conference, until I began to notice subtle little hints that indeed I was not welcome.

So this time, I really wasn’t surprised to discover that the organizers of Smart Girl Summit felt that I had nothing worthwhile to say on the subject of “Using Humor to Maximum Effect.” What did surprise me was when I saw the logo on their Web site . . .

Like I said, subtle little hints . . .

Allow me to set at least part of the record straight. The organizers of the Smart Girl Summit had nothing whatever to do with the people who spoke on the panel I moderated, except that they put their official muscle behind the invitations I asked them to send out. I invited the speakers.

Actually, I suggested the panel as well. I spoke to one of the organizers several months ago about how I thought it would be neat to have a Smart Guy panel since SGP has never been an exclusively female group. In fact, I have been a member nearly from the group’s founding and helped them with such early activities at their first Tea Party Rally in February, 2009 (for which I scripted and narrated the promotional video) and the first-ever Twitter Ball. Guys have been involved in SGP stuff for a while.

As it happened, the idea turned out to be one they liked and they asked me, since it was my idea, to moderate it and set it up. I decided to find a couple people who were known primarily for their funny work and that’s who I got. Had my panel had a different focus, I’m sure I would have chosen differently.

What bothers me here is the unspoken implication that I was simply a tool in some horrible joke, not that I was chosen because of my own history, talents, or ability. That simply is not true. I moderated that panel because I asked to do so and, more importantly to me, the leaders of SGP believed I was capable of doing so in a way that would represent them and their organization well. I believe I did them proud, not just today, but during the whole process.
