I just got through covering Rick Santorum’s speech to the Faith and Freedom Coalition event here. Afterwards, Senator Santorum, his wife Karen and their four oldest children — Elizabeth, John, Daniel and Sarah — greeted supporters here for tonight’s debate. The senator’s wife was kind enough to say a few words to my son Jefferson. who came along on this trip as my assistant.

So I came back to sit down and upload photos and video and check my e-mail, and there was an e-mail informing me that the Daily Beast has done a story about Mrs. Santorum’s ex-boyfriend from nearly 30 years ago, before she met her husband.

Stop and think about that for a minute, folks. I’m 52 — a year younger than the senator and a year older than his wife — and I’m thinking back to who I was and how I lived 30 years ago.

Would I want somebody doing a story based on an interview with one of my ex-girlfriends from back then? Would I want my wife and children and friends to read such a story?

Exactly what political relevance or news value this Daily Beast story has, I’m at a loss to explain, but I’m shocked that they would publish such a thing, especially considering how any critical inquiry into Barack Obama’s past associations was declared off-limits —  even racist — four years ago.

  1. They know that the best way to go after decent people is to hurt the people they love. They could attack Santorum all day long, the same way they did Sarah Palin, but it wouldn’t do any good. To make their families hurt, though, makes decent people think twice about being in politics.

  5. It has to do with the fact that they have nothing to disparage Rick Santorum with. So, they seek to concoct this trash to take pot shots at Mrs Santorum. They already tried mocking the family’s grief at the loss of their baby boy, and then for raising Gabriel, and those leftist reporters who did so found out that doing so blew up in their faces.

    And I support the free speech rights of even the most pathetic losers who bring nothing to the table other than visceral hatred for anything or anyone who doesn’t comport to their world view.

    What does set me off though, is that too many people sit idly by when good people’s character is assassinated on one side, while there’s a standing embargo against vetting the sitting president, his family, his associations, his education, and even large swaths of what is supposed to be his public record.

    Seriously, what will it take to wake Americans up to the fact that they are being played for fools.  Worse is that historically, liberals make up no better than 23% among us.  It’s pretty consistent, with Gallup providing the latest survey.  So essentially, 23% drive how 77% live.  WTF!

  29. Don’t forget, though, we aren’t allowed to attack Michelle Obama, because she is “out of bounds”. And a Democrat. Even though she injects herself into attempting to force things on Americans. But, attacking a Republican spouse? Yeah, the MSM is cool with that.

    What I’d like to see is for the spouse to break down and cry (crocodile) tears after one of these attacks, which would show what mean people Dems are, which would really hurt the Dems.

    But, also consider that Laura didn’t involve herself in politics like Michelle does. Laura didn’t attempt to push her politics on everyone else while being a hypocrite. Laura also didn’t attempt to live like a queen on the public dime.

    I don’t condone the personal attacks on Michelle, but, attacks on her policies are certainly well within bounds.

    Oh, and Laura always seemed proud to be an American, unlike Michelle, who only became proud when Obama was nominated.
