Tampa, Here I Come

Driving to Tampa today, after a restless night haunted by the helpless feeling tbat we are doomed beyond all hope of redemption.

Todd Akin had the chance to do the right thing Tuesday, and selfishly refused. Now, with the encouragement and support of Mike Huckabee, Akin is digging deeper the grave in which the Democrat-Media Complex are planning to bury the Republican Party.

The problem is not merely that Claire McCaskill is cackling with glee — suddenly leading by 10 points in Missouri — over the Senate seat that Akin foolishly fumbled away. Rather, Akin will now become the most famous name at the Republican National Convention:

The Republicans’ convention messaging will be thrown off, Baker said, “If Joe Biden goes to Tampa and says, ‘Where’s Todd Akin?’”

Todd Akin has made himself the Willie Horton of 2012.

All the work every Republican has done this year, every dollar the Republican Party has raised, will be wasted because of one selfish fool.

This is what I see — the Neutral Objective Facts of the situation — and I can’t shake it. Friends have tried to console me. They’ve told me that my overwhelming sense of despair is irrational.

“Look at the polls!” they say. “Good news!”

OK, fine: I know nothing about politics. All my years of experience and observation count for nothing, and so my gut-hunch is not to be trusted.

Never mind. I’ll drive to Tampa with Ali Akbar. I will spend the next several days listening to Republicans describing their plans for victory, and I will try to recover some sense of hope.

Maybe something will happen to change the trajectory.

Maybe Todd Akin will make the mistake of attending the convention in Tampa and accidentally bump into Mitt Romney, who will then attempt to strangle Akin with his bare hands. Mitt will be booked into the Hillsborough County Jail, while the convention will be thrown into confusion. The delegates will make Paul Ryan their presidential nominee, with Marco Rubio as his running mate. This shocking turn of events will create a surge of momentum the GOP will ride to victory Nov. 6.

OK, that probably won’t happen, but it could happen — and it’s a scenario at least as realistic as Todd Akin getting elected to the Senate.

Don’t try to talk me out of a dark mood like this. That just makes it worse, increasing my sense of emotional isolation.

There’s only one known cure: Hit the freaking tip jar.

  1. Aww 🙁 I sure hope it’s not that bad, but it is discouraging, that’s for sure. Either way, enjoy Tampa! I’m remaining positive! 🙂

  3. @rsmccain “Don’t try to talk me out of a dark mood like this.” How about we accuse you of irrational exuberance, instead? You optimist!

  4. I have hope that losing again by following the RINO path might break the dead hand of the crony capitalist clueless country clubbing castrati from the GOP.

  5. Akin is a tool and a fool, and the left will surely bludgeon conservatives everywhere with him. It’s what they do.

But they would find something somewhere, even if they had to invent it. It’s what they do.

The fact that the ranks of Republicans and conservatives (and I do NOT repeat myself) are comprised of human beings subject to error and/or stupidity should not be a cause for despair. We can live with that, and the raw hatred vomited thus far by Team Obama has desensitized many people to Akin’s idiocy.

The fact that lefties thrive on stupidity is a cause for despair, though. Communism ain’t going away any time soon.

  6. May I join you in your emotionally isolated room of despair? I live in MO. And I just looked at Rasmussen’s MO presidential poll numbers. And there is nothing I can do.

  7. OH, C’MON!!!! Yeah, it sucks that Todd the Wonder Boy effed up the Mizzou Senate race, but that is all it is. Romney ain’t losing Missouri, and Obama’s getting kicked to the curb. Electing Mitt is Step 1.

Remember, when the patient is bleeding to death, Step 1 is STOP THE BLEEDING.

  8. First, let’s count our blessings that this happened in August not October.
Second, let’s get over it and get on with business.
Third, let’s remember that between the two of them, Biden and BO make gaffes of this order on a weekly basis. “Legitimate rape” has far less staying power than, “You didn’t build that!”

  9. Had Akin’s gaffe come in October I’d worry — slightly. As it is, we should keep reminding voters about “You didn’t build that!” a far more profound and revealing slip by The One.

  10. Soldier on, Stacy-

What are you going to do? Your choice is do that or slit your wrists and crawl in the corner and die, and if you did the latter your family, friends and readers of this blog would miss you.

  11. Yeah, I saw that this morning when I looked at Rasmussen. Someone needs to print out this poll, make Akin read it, then slap him hard in the back of the head and yell at him “YOU’RE HELPING OBAMA WIN, IDIOT”, until he drops out.

  12. You people are almost as bad as Democrats, wanting 80 years of Progressive rot to be miraculously cured in one election.

  13. No state that went red the last three presidential elections should be within the margin of error at this point.

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Missouri Voters finds President Obama with 47% support to Romney’s 46%. Three percent (3%) favor some other candidate in the race, and three percent (3%) more are undecided. At the end of July, Romney led by six percent and he has not trailed Obama in any Rasmussen poll all year. “As the controversy over Republican Senate candidate Todd Akin’s “legitimate rape” comment continues, Mitt Romney’s lead in Missouri has vanished,” Ramussen says. “Missouri now moves from Leans Romney to a Toss-Up in the Rasmussen Reports Electoral College Projections.”Jim Hoft at Gateway Pundit was an unwilling victim.and, unlike the “Magic Uterus,” the Missouri GOP had no natural defenses. That’s not a hurricane headed toward Tampa: It’s a tropical depression.  […]

  15. Why yes, yes he does.
The Rasmussen poll oversampled women by 5, which erases the apparent Obama lead. I feel slightly better.
The issue isn’t the original Akin comments. It’s his apparent divorce from reality in failing to recognize the damage.

  16. If you hurry, you can catch Stacy and you can both leap off a bridge together, holding hands.

It will be so romantic, and will really show that Akin guy.

  17. No, he’s a sleeper agent, and the 12 years he spent in the House saying all sorts of dumb crap was just to throw us off.

Blame the halfwits who voted for the loser. You can spot them by their sweater vests.

  18. Heh. I’d be happy with a tiny baby step in the right direction. I don’t even want half a loaf, not even a quarter of a loaf. A crumb will do.

As to Todd Akin, I’m still a bit perplexed at why this is a big deal. If I was on a talking head show and asked about this …’he apologized, now let’s discuss something actually of serious importance than some minor gaffe by a pol most of us had never heard of before last week.’

  19. You can fight for the S.S. Titanic Akin all you want; if I’m going to fight for a Senate race I want it to be one that’s winnable: Wisconsin, Ohio, Florida, Massachusetts, Virginia, New Mexico, Nevada, for pity’s sake even Connecticut, Michigan and Hawaii are more winnable than Missouri right now for us, and who would have expected THAT even a month ago?

  20. Next time you visit the optometrist, you might want to get a pair of glasses that don’t have the rose tinting.

  21. Or maybe Palin will shoot the son of a bitch and get nominated by acclamation. I think even Romney might approve. Heck, he might even offer the motion.

  22. He apologized for the phrase “legitimate rape,” not the preposterous idea that rape victims don’t conceive normally. Because he still doesn’t understand it.

His campaign has been full of gaffes, and his whole career is a series of stupid statements. That’s why McCaskill spent $1 million “attacking” him in the GOP primary to get him as an opponent.

  23. You misunderstand. I have been saying exactly what you said above. I just suggest not helping to sink the SS Akin. I do not intend to contribute to his campaign (my funds are limited and other candidates more worthy). But I do hope and encourage Missouri voters to pick Akin over McCaskill, because for the simple reason McCaskill is far worse.

And I think Romney-Ryan can win Missouri. It is one point. Obviously not good, but hardly hopeless for the Presidential race.

  24. Stacy wrote: All the work every Republican has done this year, every dollar the Republican Party has raised, will be wasted because of one selfish fool.

Perhaps, we should have our friend committed for seventy-two hours for Hysteria.

This is getting so ridiculous – the behavior of these obsessed conservatives – I’m seriously think of taking some time off from serious blogging.

  25. OK. Why am *I* feeling like the contrarian here. When everyone was happy, I was generally doom-and-gloom. Now that people are writing off the campaign already, I’m wondering if this doesn’t turn into a tempest in a teapot, at least o/s MO.

I know the Left will ‘try’ to tar every GOP candidate with Akin. But is that ‘really’ enough to overturn the stench of their massive incompetence? Sure, the media is going to bat for them. But if it wasn’t Akin, it’d be something equally blown out of proportion (see today’s faux-outrage over the Birth Certificate joke).

The bottom line it, this happened in August, and in two weeks, outside Missouri, it will be “Todd WHO?” The average voter doesn’t REMEMBER two months. And we’ll have at least 10 more Biden gaffes before then.

And when it comes down to it, “You didn’t build that” from the lips of the Grand Teleprompter is far more damning than “legitimate rape” from a bomb-throwing Rep from a safe seat in fly-over country. Is it going to sting? Sure. Will it cost us the MO Senate seat? Probably–though I think McCaskill is still a very vulnerable candidate, prone to her own gaffes. But permanently making Romney radioactive? Pfft. Not going to happen.
