Southern, Conservative, American

Posted on | July 5, 2013 | 27 Comments

Yid With Lid points to a Gallup survey showing that conservatives (89%) are more proud to be American than are liberals (76%).

Interestingly, the poll also shows that Southerners (89%) are more proud of their country than people in the Northeast (81%).

Hell, yes. Freedom. ‘Murka.

Took the family to Birmingham, Alabama’s annual fireworks show last night. I’ve watched this thing 10-15 times over the years. There is always a radio simulcast of patriotic music to which the explosions are loosely choreographed. For the first time in my memory, the “grand finale” was not set to a traditional, “hooray for the USA” tune but to “Sweet Home Alabama.”

May not have been conscious on the part of the event planners — I’m as subject to projection as the next guy — but I took it as a subtle way of saying that here in Alabama — unlike in many other places, especially Washington, D.C. — there are still a lot of people who understand what this federation of sovereign states was supposed to be, and how it was supposed to work.

Southern, conservative, hetero, Christian caucasian, and yes I am proud to be an American. I’m also probably pretty high up on a watch list somewhere because of those properties, oh well.

Mustn’t let my wife see this post. You wrote ’Murka. She absolutely hates seeing people write that or any other similar words. She says they demean America and what it means to be an American. I THINK it’s just a minor peeve, but we’re from East Texas, so I’m not going to push the issue, lol

I take it as a subtle hint that Alabama is carrying the torch of the original intent “freedom” because that’s not the message coming out of the federal government in DC.

It’s been observed there wasn’t much patriotic music being played on the national mall to celebrate the 4th this year.

Chickaboomer, Independence Day. The movie’s president more inspiring message than the real life president’s message on our Independence day.

I am heartened the numbers are still close. And I think we know liberals suffer from more mental disease (hence the reason many of them are liberal) and there are more liberals in the Northeast.

Ace found that the official Church of Satan is disavowing the pro-abortion demonstrators in Texas who chanted “Hail Satan” during “Amazing Grace” at a pro-life rally outside the legislature.

The left is too evil for Satan any more.

Obama may end up being an object lesson for America. Perhaps even the low-information voters will realize that every single Democratic proposal and policy is a disaster just waiting to unfold. (There is little hope for the parasitic class, including federal workers, of course – when on the gravy train, the most horrifying thought is running out of gravy).

You wouldn’t know that “conservatives” are so proud of their country from the constant carping.

“Politically, the more conservative one tends to be the more they believe the founders would be not be pleased with the way America is today. Only 15% of conservatives, 29% of independents and 41% of liberals believe the signers of the Declaration of Independence would be happy with the
    way the country is today.”

I watched the rockets red glare last night in Boston. I was pretty pleased.

Loving the country doesn’t mean loving the state of the government.

I suspect that’s too sophisticated for your average leftist, though.

    Heh.

I’m not sure what the takeaway would be though.

I mean, if Stalin isn’t an object lesson, I think maybe “the dangers of trying to be too much like Stalin” would be all they get out of it.

“Next time, we’ll be just a little less Stalinist. Not like that obama guy.”

And they’ve been open carry for years.

One time we witnessed an open carry citizen who had executed a citizen’s arrest in Alabama.

Peaceful transfer of the perp at a gas station, where a State Trooper showed up. I’m sure the paperwork was epic.

That should be the way every state operates.

The average leftist is not a liberal, nor in any way average, but let’s not get too sophisticated here.

I don’t think it is really political or ideological here, and only regional for one reason: Southerners will tend to be prouder of America because many of them haven’t seen the Northeast or Detroit and what decades of Democratic governance has wrought.

Ignorance can indeed lead to bliss.
