You Stay Classy, Atheists!

Dana Perino was on Fox News discussing a lawsuit by atheists who don’t like kids having to say “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance:

“I’m tired of them. I remember working at the Justice Department years ago when I first started right after 9/11 and a lawsuit like this came through, and before the day had finished, the United States Senate and the House of Representatives had both passed resolutions saying that they were for keeping ‘under God’ in the pledge. . . . If these people really don’t like it, they don’t have to live here.”

A sample of the erudite atheist commentary in response:

And you wonder why ladies don’t want to go to atheist conferences? Atheists are so respectful, you f**king c**ts!

UPDATE: This is a recurrent theme with God-haters:

You can ask Michelle Malkin, Sarah Palin, Dana Loesch, Ann Coulter — any conservative woman who speaks on behalf of that which is good, true and decent will be bombarded with ugly filth from advocates of that which is evil, false and indecent, i.e., Democrats.

Democrat Party monsters even try to kill in the name of “social justice.” Because chicken sandwiches cause hate or something.

UPDATE II: What is it with Democrats and the “c-word,” huh?

  1. I have heard a couple of reports from people whom Penn considered a friend– up to the point when he discovered they weren’t atheists, at which point he rather rudely ended their friendship.

Rumor has it that Penn also figured into the depiction of atheists in the South Park episode where Cartman goes into the future and the only religion left is atheism, except there are three atheist groups at war over the control over the earth because they can’t agree on what the proper name for the atheist group should be.

  2. It’s kind of ironic, but the person who listed his hatred of religion in his Twitter bio was the most respectful and pleasant. The one who claimed to be the most respectful was the one who called God the “imaginary Sky King from Neptune.”

  3. I actually like the “under God” part very very much because without it the pledge could easily become a creepy statist vow instead of a pledge to an ideal represented by the flag.

Saying “under God” to me is a statement that there are, indeed, higher calls to your loyalty than the state.

    As it should be.

  4. Some are. Fox News panelists said things that were stupid and bigoted, and then you cherry-picked atheist responses as if all atheists were like that. If you meant to defend the idiocy that Perino was spouting this isn’t a convincing way to do it.

I could find examples of “Christians” being just as abusive and foul-mouthed. I don’t think they represent all of Christianity.

The atheists I know are some of the most loving people on earth. Go ahead and try to call Penn Jillette hateful, but that’s going to backfire pretty quickly.

People are people. Most are decent and kind. Some are mean, dishonest, and abusive. A few are mentally ill. You will find all of the above in any large group you care to name.

Another way to put it is that Tijuana isn’t Mexico any more than Detroit is America.

  5. You were told wrong. I’ve been a friend of Penn’s for years, even back when I was a Mormon. After he found out I was an atheist Formon his only comment was, “Oh, I forgot that you were that crazy”. But his treatment of me has been exactly the same before and after.

He’s talked openly and recently about how much respect he has for Christians, because they also treat him well.

Oh, and please explain why he’s friends with Glenn Beck.

  6. As a non believer, I have never pushed my belief system on anyone. My kids go to church with their grandma and I go out of my way to say Merry Christmas to anyone who says Happy Holidays to me. The whole grievance industry, the race hustlers, gay mafia, and the evangelical atheists piss me off to no end. Whats next? Can’t wait for the bestiality opponents to come out. The left will always find something to rail about.

  7. The “notSanta” is not amused by their depravity. Nor will he simply leave a bag of coal for their troubles. Their end is horrific beyond human comprehension.

  8. Dawkins is a credentialed moron. I wouldn’t put him within 10 Parsecs of the reasonable acting Atheists I know.

  9. The best testimony to belief in God is one’s life. It is the most convincing sermon possible, does not come across as shrill. The other side effect is a generous loving person, guided by their soul, seeking perfection in God.
If only I had realized the utter wonder and truth of that 50 years ago when I was alive and a robust 50 myself. If I had I would be in Heaven right now instead of purging my sins in Purgatory …

  10. The reality is there is no such thing as an Atheist. Thequestion is who they elevate as their supreme being. In the case of idiots like Dawkins, Myer and Krauss, it’s man, who is a pretty weak supreme being.

Atheism itself is a religion as it requires a belief that can not be proven by the materialistic methods they insist upon. In other words, it requires blind faith.

  11. Dialectical materialism is the proper term for it. It is the true religion Stalin subscribed to, not Socialism. Dialectical Materialism is, at its core, atheistic.

Before you react snarkishly, you might want to give a bit more thought to, and read up on, what you want to say. Stalin was an Atheist, as Mao, Pol Pot, Kim, etc. The facts might seem hateful to you, but you will find yourself reminded of them in these parts.

  12. Where to begin?
Anyone or group who uses their Christianity to engage in magical thinking that is completely devoid of common sense; anyone who uses their Christianity to “cast the first stone”; anyone who does both (which is often the case) — definitely should be steered well clear of. There are numerous examples (snake handlers; “churches” of racial supremacy; that quiverfull movement is pretty blasted weird if you ask me) — I fail to see where they are truly upholding the tenants of their faith…but if you asked them they would say they are true believers.
And honestly they engender emotions ranging from astonishment to horror from me — this is perhaps a personal bias, but I get the same twinges from other ideologies, so it isn’t, as I pointed out, a “Christians only” club (and yes, there are some atheists that I would put in this category too — anybody who gets so fanatically wrapped up in being right is most often quite wrong).

  13. The “they might be accountable” is what really disturbs them. At least they aren’t like many pseudoChristians who simply go to Church to pay, what they think is, the premiums on their “fire insurance.” Those people are in for an horrifically rude awakening when they stand before Christ at the judgment.

  14. Of course they were atheists. Socialism, Communism, Dialectical Materialism, whatever you want to call the most evil and destructive philosophy in history, had to replace religion with the state. But it was the totalitarianism that socialism requires that killed people, not the atheism. They were atheists for practical, political reasons, not rational ones.

The charge that atheists are amoral, or want to put people in ovens, is at best an ignorant canard. At worst it is bigotry. In any case it’s just plain wrong.

  15. It isn’t so much that I have a problem with the saying itself so much as what could be done with it if we as a society and as individuals are not careful. It could become a “creepy statist vow” just the way it is (and that must be carefully guarded against).
Many things that can start out as good and wholesome can be twisted to very evil use; we must be careful in all things — our republic is a very rare thing in the history of mankind, and rare things can be easily lost and more easily assailed, from within as well as from without. Not everyone is so fond of it after all.

  16. It might reassure you to know that even Pentecostals (which I happen to be) regard the snake handlers as quite weird. I would even say they are acting stupidly because of one phrase in a statement that Christ made.

I’m not sure what you mean by “the first stone” thing, but what I have observed from most who make that accusation, they simply don’t want to hear what Christianity has to say (not wants to say, but must say) about the subjects at hand. Many, in fact, feel condemnation as a result because they know in their heart that what the did, or are doing, is wrong, and that’s the last thing they wish to be reminded of.

Christians are obligated by God to speak to certain things, and that is the one thing the anti-religionists hate with a purple passion. We are aware of what crossing God leads to, and love of our fellow man dictates that we must speak out and warn of what is in store for those who engage in the depravity that has come to dominate the leftist world.

  17. No, I didn’t misinterpret you. I took your mention of the fallacy of church-state separation and riffed off of that. I did have confusion in following your argument how beliefs get warped into a Gott Mit Uns situation. “Gott Mit Uns” is similar to “Under God” and “God Save the Queen” as a national slogan. Did you mean fanaticism leading to the religious system currently practiced by atheists and Progressives alike immortalized by the slogan Arbeit Macht Frei?

  18. But it was the totalitarianism that socialism requires that killed people, not the atheism. They were atheists for practical, political reasons, not rational ones.

It’s a good argument, but here’s the thing: it works for other religions, too. To wit:

But it was the totalitarianism that feudalism requires that killed people, not the Christianity. They were Christians for practical, political reasons, not rational or spiritual ones.

Either every religion — including atheism — has blood on its hands because of people within it who weren’t “living their faith” as it were — or none of them do. I’m going to make the bold statement and say that…the people who have the actual blood on their hands are the ones who have blood on their hands. Making it an indictment for everyone else while exempting yourself is not only a lapse of logic, it’s dishonest.

  19. The “atheism as religion” meme. That’s a pretty tired chestnut. If atheism is a religion, not collecting stamps is a hobby.

The only thing required to be an atheist is to not believe in any gods. It doesn’t require faith in materialism or in anything else.

“Blind faith” is a pleonasm. Faith means to believe something in the absence of evidence. To have faith one eventually must blind one’s self to evidence that contradicts the belief.
