Texas Democrat Student Group Leader Exposed as Convicted Sex Offender

Convicted sex offender Billy Johnson

A convicted sex offender is the leader of a Democrat student group at a Texas university, Katherine Timpf of Campus Reform reports.

Billy Johnson, who is president of the Young Democrats chapter at the University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA) campus in Edinburg, Texas, was convicted in 2003 of “indecency” with an 8-year-old child, Timpf reported, citing state criminal records and a 2010 local news article about Johnson when he volunteered at an elementary school.

Earlier this month, Johnson’s work registering students at UTPA was praised on Twitter by Jenn Brown, executive director of the liberal activist group Battleground Texas:

Johnson spent three years in prison, according to records cited by Timpf, who said UTPA officials did not respond to request for comment.

  1. Go Broncs!

I thought they had turned the corner recently, but the power of stupid democrats overcomes all.

That school has been messed up for years. There were two NCAA investigations while I ran track there in the 90’s, the education department had about a 90% failure rate on entrance exams for I thought they had turned the corner recently, but the power of stupid democrats overcomes all.by their graduates, the university president was a public drunk, just too many problems to mention.

  2. Hmm. A modern university, hotbed of indoctrination into conformity and submission to authority.

A large population of students already predisposed to both by their exposure to the public education system.

A political party with a long history of politicizing sexuality.

A closed-off community that generally walls itself off from outsiders (see “townies”).

Nope, I can’t see any reason why a convicted sex offender would want to seek a position of authority and influence in such a place.

I think you’re off base on this one, Stacy.

  3. Just because the child was only 8 years old does not mean that he didn’t consent! Don’t you understand luv? #FreeKate!

  4. I’m (fairly) sure that the Young Democrats didn’t know that Mr Johnson had a different idea about what the title “Young Democrats” meant, but I do note that he didn’t try the College Republicans!

But this story indicates a real problem: Mr Johnson was imprisoned for only three years, and released at a young age. He has maybe 60 years of life ahead, and we expect him to get a job and support himself. Trouble is, we have no real policy for dealing with the fact that there are released sex offenders out there who have to work for a living.

Mr Johnson was attending college — one supposes — for the purpose of earning a degree and getting a decent job in the future, and if we are not going to lock him up for the rest of his life, then we have to want him to do that.

I just hope that he wasn’t an elementary education major!
