Victimhood as Merit: Wendy Davis Claimed ‘Mental Health’ Issues in Lawsuit

Glenn Close in ‘Fatal Attraction’: Crazier than Wendy Davis? Perhaps.

In 1996, Wendy Davis lost a city council election in Fort Worth, Texas, and filed an utterly ridiculous lawsuit claiming she had been defamed by the local newspaper. (Trust me on this: I’ve recently become an expert on utterly ridiculous defamation lawsuits.)

One of the claims Davis made was that she had suffered damage to her mental health because of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram‘s coverage.

In other words: Wendy Davis is crazy and, she alleged, the newspaper made her crazy. However, I think any sane person perusing her lawsuit would conclude that Wendy Davis was certifiably crazy long before she ever ran for city council.

Wendy Davis is to Texas politics what Amanda Bynes is to Hollywood starlets. Her campaign for governor? A cry for help.

Have we seen this cluster of disturbing symptoms before? Indeed, Ashley Judd’s supporters never seemed to understand why her mental illness made her a less-than-viable Senate candidate, perhaps because (a) Judd’s supporters were liberals and (b) all liberals are kooks.

You may remember that when liberal troll Melissa Brewer melted down, she made her psychiatric disorder the trump card of her defense: “I’m an emotionally unbalanced nutjob, so despite my hateful cyberstalking of political enemies, I’m the real victim here.”

Our natural sympathy for the mentally ill is exploited by the kooks, so that we are expected to tolerate their anti-social behavior without complaint. Their victimhood is thereby converted into an entitlement to be exempt from responsibility, so that even clearly demented actions — e.g., parading half-naked through the streets of Washington, chanting about rape — cannot be criticized.

Sympathy begets tolerance, and tolerance begets entitlement, and next thing you know, the inmates are not only running the asylum, but running for governor of Texas! Where will this madness end?

Government of the crazy, for the crazy, by the crazy

  1. The fact that she is considered a serious candidates says Democrats in Texas do not have any viable candidates for the Texas Governorship. Like Stephen Colbert’s sister running for Congress in South Carolina (In a R+20 district!), she’s going to be a money pit for rich but uninformed Democratic donors. Go for it Wendy!

  2. Good point. Rich liberals have to waste their money somewhere, and it’s probably best that they waste it where there is zero hope of Democrat victory.

  3. This is the wave of the future. None of these precious pearls have ever been taught to deal with the real world they have demanded to be put in charge of and if they have trouble dealing with it, it must be reality’s fault.

  4. OK, the lovely Senatrix Davis had to know that this would come out if she ran for Governor. This information is both personally embarrassing and probably candidacy derailing; just what rational person would take the decision to run anyway?

  5. Am I the only one to remember when Tom Eagleton got booted from McGovern’s ticket for having had shock therapy? It used to be presumed that maybe a history of mental health issues was not a good thing for someone holding the reins of power.

  6. Our natural sympathy for the mentally ill is exploited by the kooks, […]

LOL Don’t worry, Stacy, nobody will ever accuse you of showing too much sympathy towards the kooks.

  7. Yes, I remember it. I felt Eagleton was treated badly, and I don’t think clinical depression should necessarily exempt people from power, although claiming that you had mental illness from the result of a story in a paper seems a bit much.

  8. LOL. Losing the election made her crazy, but she’s all better now. This reminds me a scene from “Month Python and the Holy Grail”: “She’s a witch! … She turned me into a newt.” The knights asks: “A newt!?” And the peasant replies: “I got better.”

Great campaign slogan: “Vote for Wendy or she’ll go crazy again.”

  9. IIRC, Sen. Eagleton’s worldview gelled before la gauche began pushing abortion, so his views on that question were decent.

  10. The serially-outraged are also (I would say deliberately) missing the point:

The only disorder Davis appears to be suffering from is Extremely Thin Skin Disorder, commonly known as “butthurt”. You know how some people claim to have Asperger syndrome (commonly called “assbugers”) because they can’t handle criticism or personal responsibility? Yeah, it’s kind of like that.

On the one hand, I do pity the Cluster B parade a little, (I’m reasonably sure there were more than a few textbook Histrionics there) but honestly, if they really can’t function in society, the last place they need to be is on Twitter. Hello, parents? Your kids need treatment, not enabling!

  11. So, either she is unfit to be governess of Texas because she has mental health issues, or she lied about having mental health issues in a sworn statement to the court, which is also disqualifying.
